  1. Still don't see Thorpe making the Opening Day roster. We'll see.
  2. https://www.mlb.com/gameday/padres-vs-lg-twins/2024/03/17/764837/live/box Cease is pitching tonight...well, really Monday morning around noon against the LG Twins. https://www.mlb.com/news/dylan-cease-seoul-series-journey?partnerId=zh-20231210-1114120-MLB-1-A&qid=100000033&utm_id=zh-20231210-1114120-MLB-1-A&bt_ee=XdOis68Hwf+taANdA+wsDiihduAg7wuYjGKw4oqaF7+skL+IFkUiXI1JItadl+am&bt_ts=1702238468981 Logistical scramble to get Cease to South Korea...
  3. Ortega and Phillips just as bad if not worse. Btw ... let's see how popular Cease acquisition targets Warren and Jones (Yankees) and Stowers (Orioles) sustain their ST accolades. Way too much emphasis on a limited number of at bats...but they are usually utilized by managers as "evidence" that youngsters like Fletcher aren't 100% ready when a vet could easily take that spot.
  4. If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it...
  5. Not a bad idea....as Hill is more of a specialist. Then you have Berroa and Iriarte as well that they might attempt to stretch out (obviously Berroa has already gotten hurt, but upon his return)...they're just going to have to throw lots of darts against the wall and see which ones can stick, simple as that.
  6. UVA as well because of the program's "name" without that last second collapse to NC State, who ended up at 11 despite beating UNC, a 1 seed. Iowa is going to have a tough draw for Clark's final rodeo...WV/Princeton, then KSU (already lost to them this year before Lee got hurt)/Colorado winner (beat them in NCAA's last year, would have been a #1 seed a month or so ago but nosedived), then if they make it that far, likely against the winner of LSU/UCLA (the dreaded Reese/Clark match-up #2 if everything holds to form, which wouldn't be a surprise despite LSU's slightly disappointing season overall coming off a title and adding two big transfer stars.) On the opposite side of the bracket from South Carolina, at least.
  7. Usually it's early to mid May...
  8. Pham is a FA. Thomas is going to start again in CF. The issue there is that Fletcher's not capable of playing that spot...and the hit tool becomes questionable for a corner spot.
  9. Didn't really believe they were ever going to give Iowa State a one seed. Oklahoma started out eight spots from the cut line on Friday and TCU loss/5-9 finish to the season doomed their bid despite being in Top 25 for about 2/3rds of the season. Four bid stealers doomed their efforts. Didn't see a single projection with them out, though.
  10. That's something you worry about a lot more with legit Top 50 guys...Montgomery and Schultz. But we will see how long they hold back Thorpe and Nastrini to a lesser extent to get some type of indication.
  11. That's why they have all those guys like Keller Toussaint Deivi Garcia etc. stacked up behind...and likely another final addition or two, either FA signings or waiver claims, in the final two weeks. Crochet and Kopech piggy backing each start is one certainly possibility...or flipping positions as the season goes on to limit Crochet's innings pitched totals.
  12. B 3.11 average GPA
  13. Just hope that Iowa can make it back to the Final Four again. In theory, the first really tough matchup will come outside the first two rounds...but they still lost at home to Creighton two years ago with an arguably better albeit less hyped team. If they lose from that point onwards...it will be to a taller, more athletic and defensive-minded 4/5 team (the only loss outside the Big 10 was to KSU). Here's where they might get a UConn although Huskies could end up a 2-3 seed potentially or for example a VA Tech with Kitley back. Then you get to the Elite 8...maybe. Obviously the fans would like to see LSU-Iowa or LSU-South Carolina again at that point in the proceedings. Under no illusion they could win either a Final Four or championship game without the same type of once in a lifetime game/(and refereeing) similar to last year. Iowa men suck (NIT bound) and Oklahoma is pretty near the cut line for the bubble. Porter Moser has been a slight disappointment...although they were more competitive for the majority of this season than expected. Finally, hope Iowa State can finally put together a really strong NCAA run for once...just for the sake of the state itself.
  14. Another run scores because Vaughn is too short at first and can't make quick readjustments to bad throws. 4-0 already. Two run homer by Canzone. At this rate Keller will get the last spot out of the pen.
  15. Fathom would have enjoyed his slowly limping to first like he'd been shot. Woodford getting hit pretty hard...quite loud Mariners crowd compared to much less enthusiastic Sox fans this spring.
  16. You mean Fox Networks...until they could no longer maintain it with a straight face.
  17. I'm more of the Buffett/Munger school of thought on this. Never invested. Obviously the intrinsic value comes from the underlying block chain technology itself...rather than as a store of actual value, because it's essentially backed more by the faith and belief of its devotees. That's said, it's certainly more interesting personally than NFT's and SPAC's. Not particularly insightful because I decided in the very beginning not to invest. (But then again, I sold BRK.B and bought BABA, which was my second major investing mistake since the late 90s. Which resulted in even more index fund investing.)
  18. He's gotten a number of multiple innings looks. Might be the replacement for Toussaint and another backup starting pitcher as well. Btw, not sure they could give away tickets to watch that lineup other than Moncada and Vaughn...
  19. British A-Levels and IB...pretty standardized cuuriculum that looks at these issues more objectively/historically without attempting to suggest a best or ideal model. But Keynesian is the one that gets the most attention...as well as supply side 1980's Reagan/Bush/Thatcher/Stockman voodoo economics style.
  20. So Cease went with the whole team to Korea it appears...
  21. That's the ONE thing a student here has never selected as a university major upon applying for college... The White Sox certainly could use one or two to chart a strategic vision for the future...what it means to be a member of the organization. This team hasn't really had a unique identity since the 2004-2008 years of Ozzie Guillen and Cooper in charge.
  22. What is your job? The most common thing teachers hear is that just about anyone can do that job...vacations and benefits are too generous, but very few people have the patience required. Which is only about 1/4th of the challenge. I teach Economics, not English...fwiw. And it doesn't matter anyway...I will retire next year at age 54 and enjoy the rest of my life to the best of my ability.
  23. It's never that simple. Mena is throwing harder than he ever has and we don't even know if it's a hot gun or single gun or industry consensus. Let's put it this way...when is the last time someone in the final quintile of Top 100 prospects saw a 2 mph change transform himself into one of the top pitchers in the game? Especially when they velocity difference was in the below 95 range, which is usually pretty negligible compared to jumping from the mid to high 90s... The best pitching prospects Preller has ever traded away are Max Fried, Mackenzie Gore and Cal Quantrill. Color me skeptical. And Fried was one of his earliest deals as a GM. Unprecedented control of his pitches...we shall see. Those who have watched White Sox baseball since the 1970's have heard a lot of these similar comps that never panned out.
  24. Not sure that a Top 1-2 prospect in the game who was a dominant power out of USC is the best comp. You're describing the second version of Prior.
