  1. Caleb Williams...cap space...another high first round draft pick, etc. The future of the Bears at the moment looks light years brighter, at least on the surface. Sox fans have practically lost all hope.
  2. Then they need someone who can really sell it and patiently explain all the details and nuances. Not just act affronted and haughty when questioned professionally by someone outside of Crain's. Regardless of one's personal feelings for politics and sexual orientation, it would take someone with an eye for detail...amost a McKinsey type consultant like a Pete Butiegieg who has charisma and youth on their side. That's not the Reisdorfs nor is it Boyer. Every time JR opens his mouth (or Grifol for that matter), they have a unique talent for somehow making things worse...and making more enemies than friends. You simply can't just show up in a leather jacket in Springfield trying to act like a 55 year old, shake a few hands like it's 1930's politics all over again and expect to get your way anymore. Even if you are a billionaire and got away with it once.
  3. https://www.yahoo.com/sports/paul-sullivan-jerry-reinsdorf-face-015800271.html Didn’t take long for Paul Sullivan to go after Reinsdorf. But $1.8-2.0 billion JUST for the ball park? Are they building the Taj Mahal? The biggest hole in the argument is all those teams that struggle to draw 2 or even 1.5 million like the Rays and Orioles and Guardians and Twins and DBacks still being quite competitive. Or the Red Sox and Cubs making tons in profits/revenue and not reinvesting in payroll (although the Cubs might somehow thread the needle with a top farm system) without paying a remaining Big 4 FA. Or how bad the Angels have done drawing 2.5-3 million per season over the last decade plus.
  4. https://www.yahoo.com/sports/caitlin-clark-pete-maravich-meeting-172544892.html Column from Tim Layden, former SI basketball writer for 25+ years
  5. With the exception of Freddy Garcia, nearly all of the vets added in 2004-2005 were unwanted or had previous bad reps (AJ Everett Jenks), coming off injuries or slumps (Dye Pods) or just plain unwanted (El Duque due to salary and Contreras salary and Boston troubles) and Politte/Vizcaino were nothing more than journeymen on last legs. Of course Iguchi was totally unknown and the KW video-scouted wild card. Cotts discovered a new life as a reliever after failing as a starter.
  6. Roughly half her turnovers are on passes that would be caught at the next level and converted. Stuelke drops the ball or lets it go through her hands more than that. She had 47 against Penn State and all were within five feet of the rim. Kate Martin is the second best player and she won’t sniff the WNBA. I’m not even sure they make the NCAA’s without Clark setting up her teammates. For the highest scoring team in the country, they miss far too many bunny layups and putbacks. Greg, WNBA would have to be changed to 9 1/2 foot rims but that will never happen. The only dunks have basically been on breakaways straight to rim with an extended run up and nobody contesting. The reason there’s so much interest in Clark and S.Curry is their range…and how they create just enough space to get shots off so quickly. I think for the good of her career Clark needs to stop whining to the refs so much and get away from Iowa…hopefully the Olympic team first, but that will be a huge controversy if she makes it or doesn’t make it. WNBA vets are going to test her to no end. There’s a lot of jealousy and resistance, hard to get away from the racial aspects of her success, see comments from Swoopes, Jay Williams, etc. TV networks are dying to air every game she plays now, and the Olympic women’s bb has never been more than a side show due to talent disparity. It would be fun to watch Clark and Ionescu eviscerate Stephen A. Smith and Williams in a 3 point contest, but it will be Curry and Klay or something like that instead at the ASG.
  7. Teams are figuring out how to stop Clark to an extent…and forcing or daring the rest of the team to score. Most Iowa fans are back to expecting a Sweet 16 and out with first two games of tourney on campus. Just not enough athleticism compared to Carolina LSU Pac-10 teams. Apparently Morrow from DePaul just took the best deal and Iowa couldn’t match her financial demands. That’s the type of player they needed to relieve the scoring pressure from Clark. With all her close friends on the team graduating and lacking the patience to tutor 5 freshmen…she’s off to the Fever where her b/f is already working with the Pacers. I guess Hawk fans will still be optimistic Iowa can beat OSU at home, but B10 over now. They had leads of 12, 14 and 18 late against OSU, Nebraska and MD…blew all those leads and lost two. Nebraska loss seems to have punctured their confidence. Lisa Bluder is getting exposed a bit now, as she’s not quite an elite coach OR recruiter but very successful overall considering all the inherent limitations. Indiana is a very good team but still not as good as last season with Grace Berger having graduated.
  8. Certainly one way to simultaneously kill local sports (talk) radio in Chicago…
  9. It’s Garver I think, former Twin/Ranger. It’s criminal not to go for it with a young and cheap Julio Rodriguez. Well, $10 million then quickly escalating to $18 with his extension. Soon they’ll be arguing his star salary precludes any other big moves. All comes down to the starting pitching. Is Kirby still taking heat about his September shenanigans? Woo’s health? Comes down to Hancock and Miller…if they’re way out of it, this year might be the time to trade Luis Castillo for a haul, complicating the Cease market. Bullpen looks strong but Munoz is one of those stuff guys who could suddenly implode as closer…lots of power arms but that’s no guarantee, either, as Sox fans all know.
  10. He forgot to mention how in successful seasons chopping off half the upper deck cut off…what…at least 4000-4500 seats from previous capacity?
  11. Growing the female demographic. Reminds me of those old Umbro soccer shorts that were like garbage bag thin…well, at least they were comfortable.
  12. How likely were the Mets to compete in that gauntlet of a division even WITH Senga? If anything, might push them to trade Alonso, then maybe they resign him next year if their young players like Alvarez and Baty all progress. Cohen said no shortcuts to retooling or rebuilding that organization. And while president of baseball operations David Stearns and the Mets do not know when their star righty will be able to return, that doesn't mean they are looking to bring in outside help. According to Stearns, the organization is satisfied with the starting pitching depth that they have and Senga's injury does not effect their plan. https://www.si.com/mlb/mets/news/new-york-mets-make-a-decision-on-adding-pitching-after-injury-to-ace
  13. He’s at least signing with a team that’s attempting to compete. The Tigers are the emerging team in the division most likely to challenge Minnesota.
  14. Greinke and Votto might retire. German had lots of personal issues…so similar to Clevinger but he will eventually sign for a low/er number. Taylor caught in the same Rosario vortex…except his offense is as unreliable as Rosario’s defense. Pham was decent last year and will sign somewhere for lower than he wanted. Everyone has known for almost a decade non star vets over 32 were going to be at risk. Chapman was a star but no longer…might end up more on a Longoria track.
  15. Wonder why they don’t want Hobson more out in front on this? She prefers to stay out of the limelight? ANYONE else would be far better to sell it than JR and Family.
  16. Doubt they would ever offer anything over the $150-175 million range, but sure, FoD walk off Anderson MIGHT have been worth $200-225 million. Similar numbers were once suggested for Giolito as well after his three year run of close to dominance before the wheels came off the last two seasons.
  17. 2013-18 with same organization…I guarantee he knows a lot more about “singles life” TA than anyone on this board, or Kim Ng. 2016-18 together with Sox as well.
  18. This just means we’re that much closer to a deal with former Royal Adalberto Mondesi…also under consideration by Miami. And at least Jazz and Tim will dial up some excitement together. Doubt they make this move without talking to Burger and Avi first.
  19. Should have had 1.2-1.5 million and 1.5 to 1.8 million voting options. It can get worse if the possibility of a new stadium disappears this summer…or the threat to move again comes to the forefront with the national and local press, as they have almost nothing else to write about until the trade deadline.
  20. White Sox have produced 2 1/2 starters for Marlins in Burger, Anderson and Avi Garcia. White Sox have also produced 2 1/2 starters for their own team: Robert Vaughn and Moncada. If Eloy actually stays healthy, you can count him as another 1/2, lol.
  21. Jerry Reinsdorf: Chicago must be prepared for the death of Jerry Reinsdorf Reinsdorf takes a somewhat original route on the point of possibly moving elsewhere, but that might be due only to the fact that he already played this card in the 1980s, when he was pushing for funding for what became Guaranteed Rate Field, the stadium he is now trying to leave. You see, the reason the government should give Reinsdorf $1 billion is that Reinsdorf will likely die soon, and he just doesn't know what those other billionaires will do when he's gone: Noting that he’s about to turn 88, Reinsdorf said that “when I’m gone,” his son Michael Reinsdorf, president of the Chicago Bulls, which the family also owns, “will have an obligation to do what’s best” for other investors in the Sox. “That likely means putting the team up for sale ... The team will be worth more out of town.” And that's pretty much the game. The White Sox want more money and are offering the carrot of even more money going back to Chicago if they get it and the stick of becoming, let's say, the Nashville White Sox if they don't. https://sports.yahoo.com/jerry-reinsdorf-attempts-to-explain-why-the-white-sox-should-get-1-billion-for-new-stadium-015643813.html
  22. Jerry Reinsdorf: Shohei Ohtani's contract scares us As for the real estate question, Reinsdorf said his team couldn't survive in a world in which the Los Angeles Dodgers are giving Shohei Ohtani $700 million: “The economics of baseball have completely changed,” with top ballplayers signing contracts worth as much as $700 million, Reinsdorf said. “At the location we’re at now, we cannot generate the revenue needed to pay those salaries,” said Reinsdorf, referring to the team’s heavily-residential Bridgeport home. A new space in a livelier downtown area with shops, bars and other entertainment venues within walking distance should do better, he contends. Reinsdorf denied that the real problem is poor performance by his team. Even after winning the World Series in 2005, “we didn’t crack the 3 million (attendance) mark,” something that Series winners routinely accomplish. Perhaps at this point we should note that the largest contract Reinsdorf has ever given out as White Sox owner is Andrew Benintendi's five-year, $75 million extension. Reinsdorf is clearly implying that his team would be able to play with the heavy hitters if it had that real estate income, which is something you will have to just trust him on. The Washington Nationals have also never cracked 3 million in attendance, but they've still paid out some massive contracts, such as those of Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg. The Houston Astros cracked 3 million for the first time since 2007 last year.
  23. Look at how quickly the Rockies were at least competitive…and the Rays with all the disadvantages in the world nevertheless eventually succeeding. Expansion is usually the better choice. JR ruins things wherever he can meddle. That doesn’t change with geography.
  24. Why should the teams give Snell, Bellinger or Montgomery $50-$75 million more than they’re worth? Three Boras clients, yes? Chapman you’re 66% paying for past performance, declining vets were always going to get squeezed. Clevinger, we know all the reasons well enough. Besides Tim Anderson, that’s about the extent of projected 1+ fWAR guys…and JD Martinez will get signed eventually by someone.
