We're a celebrity-obsessed culture. American culture in this decade (people famous for being famous, reality TV, American Idol running past its peak) really blows, I'd like the 90s back.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 09:46 PM) Yeah. He's stuck in Maryland now, way too far away from the Cell. lol. That was a choice. If someone in Chicago pays me what I make now, I'm gone yesterday.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 09:39 PM) your guys news newtwork (CNN) is STILL 100% Michael Jackson coverage. Yeah it's annoying as hell but people keep watching it. CNN tends to oversaturate and be happy about it. They went completely apes*** over the swine flu thing.

White Sox Acquire RP Tony Pena from ARI for Brandon Allen

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 08:53 PM) Nick Swisher is a terrible baseball player. I'm so tired of the OBP and OPS argument... Guess what, bottom of the 9th, runner on 2nd, 2 outs, down by 1. You don't need a walk or strikeout. You need a basehit. Plus, Swisher was a baby in the clubhouse who cried about being benched after he sucked for so long. Plus, he was streaky as f***. And he had a god awful approach the plate. Anytime a hitter goes up to bat looking for a walk all the time, that's just bad baseball. And he sucks in CF. I think batting average has easily become the most underrated stat in baseball. All people care about are OBP and OPS, and those stats are fine and all, but no matter how you put it, a career .240 hitter who strikeouts 130+ times a season better hit 30+ homers and drive in 100+ runs every year, and Swisher just doesn't do that. After the last post that said he was good at baseball, I was going to post "correction, he is OK at baseball" but passed. Now I'll say it, he's not terrible, and he's not good either. He's ok. He's about a league average outfielder, and has a crappy batting average (albeit with some pop) and strikes out a lot, but a really good OBP raises his status from "bad baseball player" to "all right player." People get carried away talking about his OBP making him underrated, this doesn't mean he's good. It just means he's not bad. -
He slipped a Bartolo fat joke towards the end of that article.

Who should be the 5th starter after the ASB?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 07:49 PM) If Colon has a breaking ball, he's the obvious choice. He did have a few pretty good starts before he went down. Freddy if he's ever ready, won't be for a while. If Poreda and Richard for Peavy would have happened and Peavy didn't get hurt, KW might have had to do some time. Poreda starting I don't think is a good idea right now. Well if Colon can pitch and is healthy, he's the obvious choice. I'm kind of banking on the idea of that not happening though. -
This is why agency heads are political appointees. It's mostly bulls***. There is honestly no difference whatsoever between Republicans and Democrats in this regard.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 07:52 PM) Right, which is why I automatically thought the answer was "yes" to Thunderbolt's question. Again, not mocking Obama (this time, ) - I just thought it was something that Congress had to ratify because it was in the form of a treaty. If they renew START then it'll need Senate approval. I haven't read exactly what Obama did besides get Medvedev to agree on conditions, I'll have to read on that more. Which is probably about the way it usually happens I would think, Nixon, Ford, and Carter all did that. Reagan probably would've too but that was all shot to s*** by the time he was in office cuz of Afghanistan.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 06:02 PM) I figure they bring Colon up, and then send Poreda back to AAA making it pointless to have him up. The only thing we have done, is start his clock. Which would be kind of dumb IMO. If Poreda's here let's see what he's got. Colon, well, we know what that is. I'd like to think Poreda could do better than that. -
QUOTE (Elgin Slim @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 06:00 PM) He should be kept in the bullpen, because he doesn't have the stuff to start, but he got guys out after some guys had seen him more than once today. I'd only seen him pitch for 1 inning before today. You can give him a shot, but I believe he won't be any better than Richard, so that is why I said stick with Richard, plus the fact that I have seen Richard have decent starts before. There was a time where he had 3 brilliant starts in a row right before the Peavy deal, where he was pitching in the mid 90s with the fastball, (and as many different guns as I have seen show this, I truly believe this is legit) had a nasty slider and a good change. I've seen what Richard can do when he's on, and I believe he has better stuff than Poreda. In the starts where Richard has been getting shelled, he either hasn't been throwing the slider at all, or hanging it over the middle of the plate like today. 3 brilliant starts in a row were vs. Toronto, Pittsburgh, and KC. Toronto is decent, PIT and KC not so much. Not trying to take away from Clayton but that streak needs to be in perspective. Clayton Richard belongs in the bullpen. This isn't a knock on Clayton so much as it's a fact, it's not even a bad thing. I mean, Matt Thornton belongs in the bullpen.

If not Poreda, there is no reason for him to be on the big club. Richard would do a fine job as a reliever. Let Poreda get his feet wet, if Richard can get worked out, all the better. -
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 08:30 PM) I think you are more conservative then you think you are - throw the common definitions that the idiot liberals and idiot conservatives like to label the other side. I mean real conservative, not neo-con f***tards. In terms of "I don't want the government to be controlling my life and I want them to stay out of the market as much as possible" I'm a conservative. In terms of "I think the government could be the answer to ____" I'm a liberal. Fiscally I'd say I'm conservative but I'm obviously closer to Bill Clinton (his actions, not his intentions) than Ron Paul. Socially, definitely liberal, but you would say libertarian, same thing. On national security and foreign policy I don't really think there is a such thing as "liberal" or "conservative" because this accepts that warmongering is a valid way to conduct foreign policy, and of course that's associated with conservatives now when a true conservative probably wouldn't think much differently from a liberal. Back in the day Democrats could be hawkish, too. Each foreign problem has a certain series of options, and military is just one possible approach, but should be one of the last ones usually. Anyone who automatically jumps to military action as a solution all the time is a f***ing moron, unfortunately that's all neocons do and somehow most Republicans just fall in line when the neocons scream really loud.

Who's a worse player, Andy Gonzalez or Brent Lillibridge?

QUOTE (brendol @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 01:58 PM) umm, i guess you completely missed the point of that post. People have been saying that he is too big to be a 3rd baseman. I was pointing out that he has a similar build to Adrian Beltre, who is a gold glove 3rd baseman. So yes, there is hope that he can become a good 3rd baseman. Good one Controlled Chaos.... Try being less arrogant when you post. No, CC got your point, I think you missed his. He wasn't being arrogant.

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 02:45 PM) What? you think DJC will be in for the rest of this game? Poreda will pitch some time in this game. I'm pretty sure it's just a general beef over the fact that Poreda's up and just wasting away, not being used at all. -

Wasn't the original START something that was formally ratified by the Senate? (START = Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty)

I love Hawk and hate him at the same time. I love his catchphrases and that he loves the Sox, but his rambling about nonsense, whining about umps, and sucking off s***ty players like Carlos Gomez is incredibly annoying. I don't mind that he's a homer.

Wise is not nearly as bad defensively as we on this board felt like he was going to be but I'd still say he's about a league average defender, and having seen both of them play in person he still isn't really comparable to Anderson. Anyone saying they want him on the team over Anderson (or Getz, I don't know what he has to do with this but whatever), I'm inclined to say that's just emotions. Wise is still not a good baseball player and is still arguably worse than Anderson. You'd rather see Wise up there getting awkward strikeouts and hitting .205 and never walking than seeing Anderson hit .238, draw a few walks, and choke with runners in scoring position? What difference does it make?

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 10:20 PM) Is Matt Thornton one of the most underrated relievers in the MLB? I think so. Quite possibly. s*** he is just about as effective as a closer. -
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 07:23 PM) I just want to know the name of the liquor you were consuming when you typed this. That had to be some POTENT ass s***. I'd like to try it. Let's get whatever it is to MacPhail too and then give him Kenny Williams's number. We might be able to get Wieters off them if we play this right. Should we bring chloroform for good measure?
