  1. QUOTE (woods of ypres @ Aug 25, 2015 -> 10:33 PM) Between Hawk's one year as GM, the strike, white flag, threatening to move the team, loyalty, firing Himes, sportsvision, etc. Just terrible. Marge schott and George Steinbrenner were both banned from the game.
  2. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Aug 24, 2015 -> 12:30 PM) It would take a book to really delve into his background and legacy. A very complex individual to be sure. I thought these quotes from my White Sox library would be of some interest: “Eddie and I never discussed how to talk to reporters. We’ve just been ourselves. I always though Jack Kennedy was the kind of person I looked up to in that regard. He always gave the media a fair shake and understood you guys have a job to do. Without responsible people willing to divulge some accurate information, it’s hard to do it right. It was a much better approach then Nixon, who figured the media was his enemy. Doing it Kennedy’s way just makes a lot more sense to me. After all, nobody can buy the kind of advertising Chicago teams get. What other line of work finds newspapers assigning people to follow you around and write about how the business is doing every day? At Balcor, we have to hire a public relations firm to get our names in the paper. When baseball teams get that for free, it makes sense to cooperate.” – Jerry Reinsdorf to Bob Logan. From the book ‘Miracle On 35th Street.’ Pg. 154. Published 1983. “The idea that I must talk to the media in order to know what is going on with our fans or the public is ludicrous. I communicate with fans on an almost daily basis and often hear comments from people on the street and in the ballpark. We have committed a lot of resources to market research each year, whether it is telephone or internet polling, mall intercepts, focus groups or in-park surveys. We believe these surveys are the most impartial way to hear from our fans. I don't think a media interview gives me the same type of insight into what our fans think and feel. Believe me, our fans tell us. They care and they are passionate. I like that about sports. The fact is that I do speak publicly when there is an issue of importance to our fans and to the franchises. I owe that to our fans. But again, I don't really think people want to hear from me or go to the game to see me. I hope not.” – Jerry Reinsdorf quoted on the “official” White Sox web site, www.whitesox.com, August 16, 2004. As with any other individual he's done some remarkable things, some things that make you scratch your head and I'm sure he's done some things he wishes he could do over. (aka as he's publicly admitted regarding the firing of Tony LaRussa and the hiring of Hawk Harrelson as G.M. Mark the sports world, as well as sports media, changed IMMENSELY over the 21 years between quotes. Let's not forget that. And also, in that time, he was crucified for comments he made by fans and the media. Oh, and you don't have to put quotations marks when talking about the official site of the sox. It's operated by the team and owned by the league. I figure a "journalist" like yourself would understand the meaning of "official"
  3. QUOTE (InTheDriversSeat @ Aug 24, 2015 -> 08:54 PM) The version at the first link is available at Half Price Books, at Chicago area stores. I don't know how new, Jose Abreu figures ended up in a chain of used book stores. The item is displayed near the cash registers at the front of the store. https://www.hpb.com/stores/ They either got them from a distributor or McFarlane sold them an exclusive
  4. Btw, I made mad cash on the rios mini bobbles. That I bought at the clubhouse sale for $2 each.
  5. f*** and no. Even if Boston paid his entire salary I'd pass. Plus, they would want too much for the pleasure or getting rid of another bad contract. Ssme goes for Pablo the hutt
  6. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 16, 2015 -> 09:06 AM) Big city prices in small town America. Oh, wait. The sox have a history of overpricing these games. And dynamic pricing made it higher. That said, 3k under an official sellout is good. Not to mention the comp tix that always keep numbers below 40k. Even Saturday's game that had SRO tix at $75 drew under 40k
  7. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Aug 16, 2015 -> 11:18 AM) With the trend of young pitchers exploding onto the scene and contributing right away, teams could be less inclined to throw away a first round pick and $100 mil at a pitcher with a career ERA of over 4.00 James shields still got a deal before opening day. I suspect Jeff s will do just fine
  8. QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Aug 16, 2015 -> 08:12 AM) The White Sox will never be the Cubs. I sure to god hope not!
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 15, 2015 -> 10:09 AM) There is one more possibility I have yet to see considered. Since it would be bad for the White Sox, you could even count this as a prediction, because it would fit with everything else that has happened with this trade. The White Sox offer Samardzija a Qualifying Offer and he turns it down under the logic expressed in this thread. Teams with pitching needs and money snatch up Price, Cueto, and other guys who don't have draft pick compensation attached to them, teams with pitching needs but less money look elsewhere to guys who weren't good enough to be offered a QO. Samardzija sits there unsigned in January. A couple teams call but nothing serious. Teams have spent their money. No team goes crazy like the Padres did this year in trying to sign big names. Training camp starts, Samardzija is unsigned, teams have filled out their rosters. The White Sox toss him a small offer just in case he wants to accept it. Maybe he does and we blow another year of EJ's career blocked, maybe he doesn't. If he doesn't, he sits there unsigned through training camp. No major injuries happen that force anyone to call. On IIRC June 1, draft pick compensation expires for guys who were offered QOs but remained unsigned. Teams now consider Jeff Samardzija a possible trade deadline addition and he remains unsigned until after June 1 when he finally gets a small deal to finish out the year. The draft pick compensation that people have been telling me would be so great for the last 9 months...never appears. Rick Hahn's failure is complete. He wont sit on the market that long.
  10. QUOTE (spiderman @ Aug 14, 2015 -> 09:39 PM) Why should anyone expect Shark to now be interested in signing a long-term deal with the White Sox before entering free agency? I suspect he'll still enter free agency, but may be more apt to sign a deal with teh sox after kicking the tires on other clubs.
  11. QUOTE (harkness @ Aug 14, 2015 -> 09:50 PM) at the time of the trade deadline he wasn't really doing that great and I'm guessing we weren't getting offered enough. exactly
  12. QUOTE (LDF @ Aug 15, 2015 -> 12:17 PM) when the trade happen, the state of the system was not where the org could afford to loose any prospects, for an incredible idea of making the playoff. granted the prospects are some yrs away. look at the feeble attempt to rush MJ to play 2nd base at the beginning of the season. in order to see how ready the system is, what is the state of the pitching rotation. even before Rodon was again rush / forced into the starting rotation. next season, the sox loose shark and are they going to depend on an unproven Fulmer or take a chance and resort to EJ into the rotation. the system is still a few yrs away, but for immediate help, the org will need to look else where. Nohing in the Jeff S. trade screams " can't miss talent". Maybe when the cubs traded him away was there a guy like russel, but the sox didnt give up nealry as much as oakland. The rest of the moves were free agent deals. they only cost money.
  13. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 15, 2015 -> 02:28 PM) I dislike when people say things like this because it was a horrible trade. Sox gave up way too much. Now if the Sox would have traded Shark well before the deadline and got 2-3 pieces back, it would have been great. As of now, Sox got a one-year player who has been lousy on a lousy team. Wwere any of the offers better than losing the comp pick?
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 15, 2015 -> 10:29 AM) And the end result is going to be...we paid $9 million for him this season, the A's paid $1.5 million, the A's will have those guys for 4-5 more years, and we will keep seeing comments here about how the White Sox minor leagues has no depth while wondering how that could possibly have happened. The White Sox have called up several players this year from their minors and just by having them be non-terrible, they've helped this team to winning streaks (Tyler, Trayce). Depth can be nice too. Counting the draft picks...we gave up 6 players from our minor leagues for the privilege of the 2015 season and we'll be lucky to get 1 back next summer. How many guys that K-Hahn has traded away turned out to be any good these last 15 years?
  15. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 14, 2015 -> 09:13 PM) Actually, not selling out a late Friday afternoon against a Cubs playoff team isn't that great. and it was $40 to walk in the door.
  16. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Aug 14, 2015 -> 01:48 PM) I have noticed that on their twitter account, they post updates on the Cubs games as they progress, but don't bother tweeting about during Sox games. I've wondered if that are being whiny about losing the Sox broadcasts and are choosing to ignore them more. well, they are GETTING the cubs next year. sox are simply a contractual obligation.
  17. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 15, 2015 -> 02:44 PM) You do realize that Hawk is THE homer in baseball. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I hate it but he is the biggest homer ever. you should see vin scully get excited about the dodgers. he's the consummnate pro, but he is a homer.
  18. QUOTE (woods of ypres @ Aug 16, 2015 -> 01:34 AM) Having Hawk hurts the brand more than it helps. Who is going to want to watch losing baseball on TV with an old fool on the mic. the cubs made hand over fist money with that exact same formula. harry on tv, and ron santo on the radio!
  19. QUOTE (WBWSF @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 07:13 AM) I read where the White Sox TV ratings have gone up a great deal on this winning road trip. I'm just wondering if the White Sox fans will turn out for this upcoming homestand. There are a ton of unsold tickets for this series against the first place Yankees on WhiteSox.com. I'm hoping for some good crowds this weekend which is shaping up as a big series for the White Sox. The Yankee series is priced higher than a typical weekend series. But I bet crowds of 25k and higher are possible. Sunday should be well attended as that is a family Sunday
  20. QUOTE (Brian26 @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 04:58 PM) Didn't see Jose Valentin mentioned. Also the road-jersey Frank Thomas and Paul Konerko from 2002. Also from 2003, the Konerko home jersey batting, the Magglio home jersey All-Star batting, and the Frank home jersey kneeling. On top of those, there are variations of all three in the black alternate unis. Also not sure if you listed Bill Melton and Joe Crede. The 03 magglio was not a SGA. it was for retail sale, and came in clamshell packaging(I saw some other 03 ASG bobbles, from players on other teams, in the same packaging at jewel that summer).
  21. I still think he stays. And signs long term.
  22. QUOTE (LDF @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 10:30 AM) in truth, i will give credit to those who use the public transportation. i have us my or my friends car. but dang, when i was young, we crave that there was other places to continue the night. and i think that is what make the northside a place where many like, but i will stay this, the south side fans really like or enjoy the game. You're right there's nothing by soldier field.
  23. QUOTE (Dunt @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 10:19 AM) The el is right there By right there, you mean a mile?
