  1. JJ Putz No one else will be worth it really.
  2. Lets just go with for sures and question marks. Like fer sures LF - Juan Pierre CF - Alex Rios 2B - Gordo SS - Alexei These guys are too important/good/contractually obligated to be moved. Bench - Teahen, Lillibridge No value. P - Buehrle P - Peavy These guys won't/can't be moved. Linebrink, Santos, Thornton - bad contract/valuable/amazing Moving on to... TRADE BAIT No positional guys. Sad but true. Unless KW thinks he can get something for Flowers or Morel, it's doubtful we can move any positional guys due to lack of value or bad contracts (TEAHEN) P - Edwin Jackson P - John Danks P - Gavin Floyd KW could try to sell high on Jackson or get a huge haul for Danks, either of which would add a lot of uncertainty to 2011's rotation. Floyd is a longshot here but I wouldn't rule him out entirely. Now the bad news... Non-tenders RF - Carlos Quentin has been one of the worst everyday players in baseball, with an inconsistent bat and stupefyingly awful defense. Even if you could get something for him, it would probably come with a similar price tag. Q would likely get about 4+ mil next season in arb, but he could get the Jack Cust treatment and be brought back for half that or less. He may still have value as a DH. Tony Pena - 2 mil for a bad bullpen guy is not a wise use of resources, especially with Linebrink eating up 5.5mil. Bobby Jenks - Duh. finally, Free Agents Paul Konerko - At first this might seem like a no-brainer, but the 1B crowd is pretty strong this offseason, and Paulie is no spring chicken. You might see the org go slightly younger (Laroche), cheap with upside (Pena), cheap and just hope he's decent (Overbay) or something else. AJ - History is on his side, but the future isn't. When catchers start to drop off it can get ugly quick. We might see a brand new face behind the plate next year, or maybe they give Castro a chance to catch full time. Ramon Castro - See above. Omar Vizquel - At his age, and as delightful as he's been, this is as close to a sure bet as you'll see. Should be cheap and he clearly still has some gas left in the tank. Plus Oz loves him. Andruw Jones - Eh, he's been decent, but I dunno if he takes another minimum contract. If so, sure. If not, next! Mark Kotsay - NEXT Manny Ramirez - Wild card, a lot depends on what his agent thinks he can get on the market. I wouldn't be opposed to it but bringing him back might not be the best move for the org. Wait and see! JJ Putz - I'd love to have him back, but again, it depends on his offers. Some team hard up for relief with deep pockets like I dunno...DETROIT or NEW YORK could overpay him and that would put us out. Freddy Garcia - A nice surprise, and I can't imagine with his history, both with Ozzie and with injuries, that he will get a big multi year offer, so look for the Sweaty One to return in 2011. Starting depth is never a bad idea. That about covers it. The predictable thing with KW is his unpredictability, which makes each offseason exciting, anyways. Who knows what he'll do next!. Obv. I'd like to go into 2011 with a stronger offensive core and more starting depth, so that when a guy inevitably does go down, there's a capable body there to take his place (and not Torres and Harrell). (For the purposes of this harangue I am going to assume Sale starts in the minors)
  3. We'd probably have to take some other bad contract in return.
  4. They could, and may still, non-tender Pena and try to sign him for cheap. He isn't worth what he's being paid now, let along what he will make next year. Maybe they NT him and put that money toward resigning Putz? Kenny has some big bullpen questions to resolve.
  5. I meant it as a compliment, believe it or not. 95+ mph fastball, good movement, he threw at least one sick offspeed pitch in the inning. He has probably the best stuff of any of our minor league pen guys. He could eventually be a Pena replacement after Tony is non-tendered this offseason.
  6. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 7, 2010 -> 10:43 PM) Things always look bad when we get blown out, but... Torres is just another guy who now has to make a living doing something else. Hope he got his degree. Awful pitcher. Man, Harrell's line is ugly tonight. Wow. The Royals are laughably bad. However they beat us their fair share of times. Minnie, of course, is mopping up on them. I just hope if we don't miraculously catch them that the Twins finally win it all. I don't. I need something to lord over my Twinkie fan pals and their quick exits are perfect ammo. I do think they'll win a postseason game this year, at least.
  7. Eh, other team's best starter, our worst/injured/AAAA guys can't contain the Tigers. It's expected to lose sometimes. Danks and Floyd go next, and give us better odds. I'd think 4.5 or 5.5 back going into the Twins series. Give it up for Infante, who looks like mini-Pena, and Dayan on drawing his first walk. Keep reaching for that brass ring son. Dreams do come true.
  8. I am watching any opportunity to get into the playoff, but not expecting much from this. The Rays are stumbling a bit but are still really good and probably better than the Twins. Let Minny get out on the road a while and see if they still win 6 games in a row.
  9. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 5, 2010 -> 04:24 PM) It pains me to think of all the extra wins we would have had if another manager was here to not make the team hit .200 from April-June 10th, or make the starting pitchers not suck ass for 2 months, or make the bullpen not collapse. DAMN YOU TO HELL OZZZZIEIEIEE!!!!! Its comical how upset you guys are getting over the most insignificant coach of the 3 big sports. Save your outrage for the disgrace that is the Bears coaching and front office that legitimately destroys that team. Every time I get upset about how the Sox are run and managed I think about the Bears and the Cubs and then I feel a bit better.
  10. i guess you take the bad with the not as bad w/ OG
  11. twice in one day for Jenks huh I dunno if my heart can take it.
  12. QUOTE (chw42 @ Sep 4, 2010 -> 08:49 PM) Red Sox fans really do love Lowell don't they? popup [sad trombone]
  13. Insurance runs plz, it would be nice to be able to trot out some garbage time pen guys.
  14. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Sep 4, 2010 -> 08:07 PM) NESN showing Harrell and Infante warming. oh jeebus shoot me now
  15. 10 to one he doesn't put ANYONE on probably 4 to one that he blows it.
  16. Boston on the road is the hardest series we have left. Meanwhile, the Tigers have been tough at home but have been reduced to playing a lot of their AAA positional guys. Overall i'd be pleased with 4-3 and thrilled with 5-2, and I think this team can do it. Getting back Thornton would be huge, getting back Beckham will be a big help as well.
  17. For example, some in this thread have overrated Quentin. However, I think JCM24 is significantly underrating Danks. His comps are like, Cole Hamels and Jon Lester. Those guys aren't going to be shipped off for Jason Bay anytime soon.
  18. I'm not saying they should trade him, merely refuting the idea that the Sox would get crap for him, which someone upthread seemed to think. They'd get a good return but it'd be a huge gamble to deal a proven starter.
  19. Jose Martinez Andy Wilkins Andre Rienzo Matt Heidenreich In the low minors. Not much in the high minors but Eduardo Escobar and Josh Phegley have looked good in AA so far. Charles Leesman has put up decent numbers there as well. I like Rangel Ravelo but he isn't on the map quite yet. I was liking Leighton Pangilinan before he disappeared. Oh yeah can't forget Tyler Saladino. Good things being said about him.
  20. They should be able to get something like two A prospects on the Sickel scale (or a prospect and a decent MLB player) plus a couple B/C prospects. Young, under team control for 2 more years, very good, left handed. We should get more than Seattle got for half a season of Lee anyways.
  21. Quentin is fragile, inconsistent and getting expensive fast. It's not like no one has noticed his struggles. Most articles i've read blame his exaggerated flyball tendencies for his insanely low BABIP. Right now he has little value, but tantalizing potential. Choo, meanwhile, is a consistent producer in all facets of the game. Decent power, on-base monster, excellent fielder with a rocket arm, even steals a base or 20. Basically he's one of the better RF in the AL. Maybe Q for BJ Upton but even then I think the Rays would want another good piece.
  22. Danks for Gonzalez would be an overpay, I think, and Quentin has negative trade value, so maybe that would work, but why? Also the Pads are less likely to trade their star hitter, who they don't really have a replacement for, now that they are winning. You're right that they will need starters but not anyone of Danks' caliber and cost. If i'm a pitcher i'm basically begging to pitch for the Padres, no other team will make you look better. They'll re-up Garland and replace Correia on the cheap or something like that. Putz/Santos/Thornton would be pretty good, but you better hope they can all throw 100+ innings because Linebrink/Infante/Leesman/Harrell is garbage time. Bad/Wild Thing/Birmingham-induced mirage/Not an MLB pitcher. Cost aside, (and ignoring the fact that the Pads won't trade Gonzalez) that lineup is quite good, although counting on Morel and Flowers to do anything at the MLB level at this point is a bit hasty. But as mentioned, cost and improbable trades make it a moot issue. Konerko at DH is a waste of Paulie's talents and he is likely to sign elsewhere before limiting himself to DH here. Craw-daddy is going to get a lot of money, like, Torii Hunter kind of deal, maybe a couple mil more per year, and the Sox won't and shouldn't allocate their resources that way. Maybe they can pry Luke Scott to replace Q or, if Jerry REALLY digs in, Jayson Werth. There's nothing in his history to suggest Edwin is going to keep up this string of dominance. Who knows with Peavy, but i'm not counting on much, at least for next year. Sale shouldn't be in the rotation next year. Gavin and Buehrle will probably be themselves, and thats a good thing. Fair amount of uncertainty going forward. I still wouldn't give this team more than 82 wins. That bullpen is so so bad, it'd be like Diamondbacks in 2010 bad. Arizona has the most position players with over 3 WAR and yet they are bottom feeding scrubs because their pen has been horrible all year. You can't build a pen with AA pitchers and AAAA failed starters or else you get the 2007 White Sox.
  23. Maybe after his next contract, assuming that Morales doesn't come back strong, which i'm not convinced of. I doubt he ever plays for the Halos.
