If we can't trade for a controllable LH RF, I've warmed to the idea of giving Alex Gordon a 1 year deal. He should be relatively cheap, knows the central really well (obviously), and at least plays really good D. Not a long term commitment and gives the OF prospects another year to see if someone emerges (still hopeful on Micker). I've made it no secret that I think the Sox should trade for a controllable LH RF, but obviously a little easier said that done. I wouldn't hate Gordon as a fallback option. Offseason: Sign Gerrit Cole - 6 years, $200M Sign Grandal - 3 years, $56M Sign Alex Wood - 1 year, $10M Sign Alex Gordon - 1 year, $8M Sign Jose Abreu - 1 year, $10M Line-up by mid-May: Robert CF, Moncada 3B, Eloy LF/RF, Grandal C/1B/DH, Abreu DH/1B, Alex Gordon RF/LF, Anderson SS, McCann / Collins C/DH/1B, Madrigal 2B BN: Leury, Goins, Collins/McCann Rotation: Cole, Giolito, Cease, Wood, Lopez (Kopech joins shortly thereafter; Rodon waiting in wings to save Kopech/Cease innings in July on) Pen could use some work. Could convince me to use the money I gave to Wood on some relievers and just let Kopech go from the start. Payroll would be in the $125-$130M range for 2020. Alot to add, but its not like the Sox haven't operated in that realm in the past.

8/6 | Sox @ Tigers GM2 | Santiago vs VerHagen | 6:10pm CT

At least Hector is easy to root for, even if he sucks. -
Everyone else has him blocked.

Yolmer is good as gone. No chance they pay him $6.5-7M. Maybe they try to get him to sign a cheap one year deal before arb, but he's making $4.6M this year and isn't taking a paycut. -

#teamgoins I like this guy. For $1M or whatever he'll cost to retain, I am all for it as the 25th man. -
I don't give two fucks about the cubs, or half the shit you ramble on and on and on about on a White Sox message board that doesn't have a damn thing to do with the topic.

I feel like there are more people who post here frequently that are hoping for this organization to fail than there are people who generally want them to take the next step. Kind of sad.

Hector Santiago Contract Purchased; Castillo Reinstated
ChiSox59 replied to ChiSox59's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Probably nothing, but one thing I found interesting is the Sox press release said that Castillo was the 26th man, and Santiago was a regular roster move. Is the "26th man" always available for both games of the DH? I always thought they were just available for the 2nd game of the doubleheader. Could also just be a typo from the Sox press release folks. Probably doesn't matter regardless, just thought it was interesting. -
SoxTalk fan pulse: How far away are the Sox from competing?

I would agree that Cole and Strasburg are a step above the other top end guys, with Cole obviously the best FA SP. -

I guess depends on how you define front-end SP and "competing". To truly compete for the division, I think this team needs to add one of Cole, Strasburg, Wheeler, Ryu, or Bumgarner. I think this team could be over .500 and be pretty interesting adding a pitcher from the next tier - Keuchel, Wood, Odorizzi, Gibson, and Pineda. Personally, I'd like to see the Sox sign one of each and take it slow on Kopech. We'll see, but ultimately I think this team is much closer to competing than they currently appear. Staying healthy next season will be important, obviously. -

I see no reason why this team can’t compete in 2020 IF (and perhaps a big IF), they add at least one front end SP, a RF, another solid bat to either play 1B/C/DH and a veteran pensman or two. Most will say that is a lot to ask, but I am looking at a team with a sub $50M payroll next season and I think that figure will be at a minimum doubled come Opening Day. -
Nothing we didn’t already know. Banuelos transferred to 60 day to make room on 40 man.

The shitty lineups suck, but to me the bunting takes the cake. It’s embarrassing how much Renteria bunts.

8/5 | Sox @ Tigers | Gio vs Turnbull | 6:10PM CT
ChiSox59 replied to Tnetennba's topic in 2019 Season in Review
Goins is growing on me. He likely wouldn’t cost more than $1.25-1.5M next season. Could do worse as your 25th man. Dude has a great eye and can play some d. Has lit together good at bats, and picking up mostly where he left off in Charlotte. Definitely taking him over Yolmer at the price. -
You, legitimately, have no idea what you’re talking about. It wasn’t about trying to extract more future value in trade for Colome. It was about not acquiring broken prospects or AAAA players for a guy who could really help this pen next season. This deadline was without a doubt a buyers market. There were a couple deals that seemed to favor the seller, but generally those were moves that had guys with a lot of cheap control moving. Colome is obviously not that. Hahn has very little to trade. A tad disappointed we didn’t see Nova/Jay/Castillo jettisoned our of town, but the first 2 actually serve some purpose.

Lol, I am not being dramatic. You don't have to like what the club has decided to do, but its probably best to come to terms with it. Robert (and Madrigal for that matter) are not playing in the major leagues until next May. Sorry.

A fair and balanced soliloquy about Jose Abreu, by ron
ChiSox59 replied to ron883's topic in Pale Hose Talk
He can opt out of the 3 years and $62.5M remaining on his deal if he so chooses. -
Well, you did say "I mean it may be for the best as far as financially", which would indicate that you think the Sox are partially motivated to do this to save money. Which really isn't a factor here at all. Robert isn't rotting in AAA. He has 650 minor league at bats, and about 200 over A ball. He turns 22 tomorrow. He missed the majority of last season hurt. The Sox aren't ruining this kids development by letting him spend another 30 days in AAA. I get everyone wants to watch him in the bigs. If they called him up tomorrow, I'd be excited too! But I am willing to wait because I know it will be worth it in the end. I am 29 years old. I have a lot of White Sox baseball ahead of me. I know this team could be juggernaut in 22-26, and I know they suck balls right now. I'd prefer to have 28 year old Robert on this team than as a first year player on the Yankees after he signed a $500M contract.

Ya, we're all tired of waiting. It sucks. But brighter days are on the horizon. Good things come to those that wait. I'll say it again - no reason to lose patience in the 11th hour.

Twins will without a doubt be picking up that $12M option. -

Yes, I am aware. Basically saying you resign Abreu for 1B/DH, the RF HAS to be a switch hitter or lefty. -

ChiSox59 replied to ron883's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Yes, Grandal at 4/$60M is a WAYYYYYY better value than Abreu at 2/$25M. I think Grandal is closer to 3/$60M or 4/$70-75M, and Abreu closer to 1/$10 or 1/$18M, though. I am going to lose my shit if the Sox waste $25M on Abreu. IF you want to bring him back on a short term deal fine. But it should be like a 1 year $8M deal with a $10M club option. If they give him more than 2/$18M, they're just flushing money down the toilet. You could do both though. DH is open. 1B is open. McCann probably shouldn't catch everyday. Grandal and Abreu is doable, but most definitely need a left handed RF Then. -

Cron is not going to be a FA unless he is non-tendered again, and I kind of doubt he will be. -

Grandal is the best fit. And better yet, he can catch too! Justin Smoak kinda sucks, but could probably do worse than him on a cheap one year deal if he is paired with Grandal and a legit RF acquistion. Need some lefty bats, and he takes his walks. -
I see the report on MLBTR says he cleared waivers, so perhaps the 48 hour period was one of the changes this year.
