QUOTE (Deadpool @ Jul 17, 2016 -> 05:26 PM) Agreed. Teams are building small armies of stats and sabremetrics specialists with complex supercomputers to help them make the right decisions. Find an assistant in one of those organizations and start over. Boston is loaded with those guys and had a GM that lived w numbers. They ended up signing and trading for Sandoval, Hanley Ramirez, Rusney Castillo , Joe Kelly and the GM lost his job. You need numbers guys and baseball guys and hopefully use both to make decisions. -
7/16/16 Sox @ Angels Shields vs Shoemaker
SCCWS replied to Condor13's topic in 2016 Season in Review
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 17, 2016 -> 03:18 AM) I would like to tip my cap to Shields. He's bounced back very very nicely since his horrific first couple starts with Chicago. Give credit where credit is due. You know, I am the worst critic of our team not being good enough to contend. And I stand by that with catcher, DH, right field glaring weaknesses. We have 3-4 slots out of 9 pretty overmatched at this level. And I feel like no team with a catching combo like the Sox deserves to talk postseason. But ... the other part of me, the one that thought we would play the Cubs in the WS when we were 23-10 (great pitching and defense at that point!), says the Sox are grossly underachieving considering they have a big three of Sale, Quintana and Shields (Rodon wasn't too bad either; not great but not too bad) and a great closer in Robertson. You'd think maybe they'd eke out a wild card with guys like that as well as "name" everyday players Frazier, Cabrera, Eaton, Lawrie, Abreu and now Anderson). So I'm torn. If you held a gun to my head I'd stand by us just not being good enough, but I'd at least listen to those who think Robin and Coop are underachieving because of reasons just stated. I think a very telling statistic 13 S.O and no BB. The same pitcher who had 13 total strikeouts in his last 3 starts combined. I think the roster more than Robin is the problem. I thought going in this was a 85-86 win team and they may be just that. But I posted a few weeks ago that I think Robin is gone after this season( his choice or not). Therefore, I would test drive Renteria as interim mgr. during meaningful games right now. Why not see if he is a viable candidate for the next manager? You also throw in Coop which may be another problem but the hitting is still awful. I would not make that change as well but after the season I think Steverson has to go. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 12, 2016 -> 10:28 PM) http://www.freep.com/story/sports/columnis...tions/86974920/ Tigers in almost the exact same position as the White Sox. Their most desired trade assets are key parts of their "two year plan" which goes through 2017...they also are stuck with $38 million in bad contracts for Sanchez and Lowe, not to mention the Verlander/Cabrera contracts keeping them permanently suspended in "win now" mode. So you've got the White Sox, Tigers, Royals and Yankees that are "stuck" in a position where adding anything of significance might not make any sense financially or prospects surrended-wise. You've got Baltimore, Boston, Toronto (depleted minor leagues but drawing huge crowds so the revenue's there to make at least one move), Cleveland, Texas and Houston really looking to make a move. And Angels are also basically "stuck" for a number of reasons. That leaves the Seattle Mariners as the one big mystery team in this wild card race, because they already have Cano/Cruz and a gold mine with their new ROOT tv deal providing them $118 million per season. OAK, TB and MIN are your three rosters to pick from on the AL side. Kind of. Toronto players get paid in US dollars. But their box office revenue is in Canadian dollars. So apples to apples, the Jays drawing 38, 000 would be equivalent to the White Sox drawing 29,000

7/15/16 White Sox at Angels
SCCWS replied to Swingandalongonetoleft's topic in 2016 Season in Review
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 15, 2016 -> 11:02 PM) If the Sox tank these next 2 weeks, do you think they put Quintana on the market? I bet we could get a haul from the Rangers or Red Sox. Not the Red Sox. Maybe in the offseason if they don't get into postseason. But they are not trading one of their young studs ( Betts or Bradley) when they are in the drivers seat for the playoffs. You must get at least one MLB young stud if you trade Q -
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 15, 2016 -> 01:05 PM) .253/.300/.326 in 761 major league plate appearances. Where do you see a capable hitter? Shuck may actually be a better option.

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jul 15, 2016 -> 04:46 AM) They arent going to showcase him by bringing him out of the pen, that makes no sense and with the way hes been pitching he absolutely earned a promotion. Agree unless another organization(s) sees him as a reliever and the Sox will showcase him for the weeks leading up to the trade deadline. But more likely, maybe the bullpen is his long-term destination this year and they didn't want him making one start and then when Rodon returns move back to pen. FWIW-Ranaudo was outstanding last night against Boston AAA. Maybe some payback but he 3 hit them over 8.
-
QUOTE (Condor13 @ Jul 14, 2016 -> 09:19 PM) No idea what the metrics are, but just from watching some games this year I'd say he is much better then Jackson and Eaton. I saw a Colorado writer write recently he is considered an average CF. He also wrote he is their best trade chip and should bring back a "haul"
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 14, 2016 -> 07:08 PM) The good news is he will be with the team for 2 weeks before the deadline so he can be evaluated. I would totally agree with you if he wasn't going to be ready until after the deadline. If Mourneau isn't swinging well they bring in another hitter IMO. If the "rumor" they are trying to trade for a CF is true, I think that is the bat and Morneau is here regardless of his production.

Dombrowski is determined to upgrade their chances with the 3 moves he made this month. I guess the White Sox never matched up with our young pitching for their young hitting.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 12, 2016 -> 03:51 PM) I'd package Frazier and David Robertson in a blockbuster. Sox get 5-6 Bosox prospects or Dodger prospects or Yankee prospects? Not getting Boston prospects for them. They want starting pitching first and foremost.
-
QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Jul 11, 2016 -> 01:00 AM) I think they could honestly just trade Quintana and get better. Short term (rest of the season) it'd hurt the rotation but next season would be more beneficial. That's if you could get a haul from Boston. Personally, I'd love to see the, blow it up and watch a bunch of young top prospects grow. It's fun watching Tim come up and grow and do well. Imagine if we had Moncada, Benintendi, Devers, etc. from trading those guys. I'd be excited to watch them develop and they're close enough to the bigs that it's not like your trading for a bunch of low A prospects. If you are trading Q, which i have no problem with , I would want at least 1 MLB player along w the type of prospects you name. If Boston, I want Betts since I now think Bradley is untpouchable. If they could get Betts and Moncada I would do it.

QUOTE (TitoMB @ Jul 10, 2016 -> 01:59 PM) Just confirms my thoughts that he should not be used outside of save situations. Every time Robin throws him in there in those situations, he seems to give up runs. But some pitchers need periodic work. Maybe Robertson is one of them. If a week goes by w/o a save opportunity, it may be out of necessity he ends up getting used.

QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Jul 10, 2016 -> 04:32 PM) Sox need two bats and two good relievers. I assume you also mean good bats. That would cost us Q or Rodon and Fulmer.
-
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jul 10, 2016 -> 03:15 PM) There's no argument the Sox were far more successful in one of their three playoff appearances since the inception of the current division structure than the Indians and Twins were in their 14 combined appearances during that same time frame. But that wasn't the point I was making. The more overarching observation was that the small market teams in the division have won the division five times as often as the large market Chicago White Sox have. That's kind of embarrassing. And the "current management team that is in place" that you reference has only built teams that have won the division in just two of their 15 years now being at this thing. Not exactly an eye popping record of achievement. Actually I would agree with the assessment that the White Sox are more accurately a mid-market team and the Cubs the large market team in Chicago. bleacherreport.com/articles/961412-mlb...30-mlb-teams-by-market-size

QUOTE (jeffro2525 @ Jul 10, 2016 -> 09:53 AM) I would settle for anyone who could throw some strikes. Everyone of these borderline guys mentioned above have the same problem...throwing strikes. Ynoa, Purke, Kahnle and Beck have all failed miserably getting ahead of hitters at the major league level. I was listening to Dennis Eckersley talking the other night about relievers. He said many non-closers nibble and rarely throw strikes on a consistent basis. He said the reason is most of the bullpen guys other than closers have a limited pitch selection. They are there because they may have 1 good pitch and the rest are very hittable. So the coaches have them trying to throw around the edges because when they hit the strike zone, they tend to get hit hard.

**7/9 Game Thread: White Sox vs The Not So Braves"
SCCWS replied to Brian's topic in 2016 Season in Review
QUOTE (soxforlife05 @ Jul 9, 2016 -> 07:53 PM) No team that's out of the race is going to give up a cheap young bat with upside. That's what these rebuilding teams are currently stockpiling. Didn't we give up one of those a few years ago in Semien? You missed my point. For example, Boston desperately needs starting pitching . Dombrowski is not known for patience. I would trade a Q, Rodon or Fulmer if it would return a Betts or even better a Bradley. It may have to be after the season. But the Sox have only a few trade chips. I would not use Fulmer now to get a 30 year old bat hoping to make the playoffs. Rather I would want to acquire a young bat from a team w hitters desperate for a pitcher. It may be now or after the season. -

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 9, 2016 -> 05:17 PM) No reason for the Sox to be in sell mode. If they win tomorrow that's 6 series wins in a row with Morneau on the horizon and I am sure Hahn will be knocking down doors to get a relief pitcher or 2 and possibly another bat. Wouldn't be surprised though if nothing happened right up until the deadline to see how Morneau does while Hahn tries to nickel and dime other GM's. Rather than buy or sell mode, I hope Hahn is improve the roster mode. Rather than go for the 30 yr old established veteran bat, I would rather go for the 22-24 yr old semi established bat. Even if it diminishes the chances this year but improves the age and strength of the roster for next year. Trade for an Anderson type rather than a Frazier. If we have to trade a Fulmer, get a young bat in exchange. -
I think they have to add a 4/5 SP. Gonzalez has been up and down and I think an injury to a SP is inevitable. If someone hits the DL for a few weeks, I don' think there is a viable short-term replacement at Charlotte. Maybe the age of our top 3 is a plus but so many pitchers are going down lately that I think we need a back-up or make Gonzo the 6th man. I think there are enough bullpen options so I would go for a SP first.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 4, 2016 -> 10:36 AM) Next two weeks: Bos 44-37 -- 3 vs Tex, 3 vs TB, 3 at NY Det 44-38 -- 3 at Cle, 4 at Tor, 3 vs KC Tor 45-39 -- 3 vs KC, 4 vs Det, 3 at Oak KC 43-38 -- 3 at Tor, 4 vs Sea, 3 at Det Hou 43-39 -- 3 vs Sea, 4 vs Oak, 3 at Sea Sea 43-39 -- 3 at Hou, 4 at KC, 3 vs Hou Sox 42-40 -- 3 vs NY, 3 vs Atl, 3 at LAA A lot of head-to-head where teams can go 5-5, while the Sox can go 7-2. Could look good in a couple weeks if the Sox handle their business. Right now, we need to pass KC which should happen by next weekend and then Tigers. First goal is 2nd place in Central. Get to 6 or 7 games over .500 by All Star break. Then add a LH bat and a 4/5 SP.

One step at a time. We pass the woeful road Royals this week.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 2, 2016 -> 01:24 AM) I was about to guess the replay group in NYC had already gone home but that couldn't possibly be the case, as the Yankees are all still playing in SD. Watched the replay. Clear that ball wasn't out of the field of play. Hard as hell for a home team to evict fans for that one, because it was the second bounced and everyone probably assumed it was out of play already from the original bounce before it caromed in that direction at a totally different angle. Obviously, with Trout running....he scores easily. I can't imagine if David Ortiz hit that ball against the Yankees (trailing by 1 late) and it was, let's say, Bogaerts or Bradley, Jr., running that they would have been sent back to 3rd base with their team down by a run still. Just no way that happens. Never in a million years. WRONG. That group in NYC are all Yankee or Met fans. New York teams always get the benefit of replay calls.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 1, 2016 -> 01:46 PM) I am happy with this alignment. Jesus, Matt Davidson though. I hope he comes back and hits .300 in AAA. Such a tough break for a guy who has shown by many accounts to be nothing but a great dude. If Leo Durocher was around today he would tell you great dudes finish last.

July 1st, 2016 - Chicago White Sox vs. Huston Astros - 7:10
SCCWS replied to hi8is's topic in 2016 Season in Review
QUOTE (hi8is @ Jul 1, 2016 -> 02:19 PM) A battle of two hopeful teams starts today in a pivotal series. Both are on the outside of a wild card spot and both seem to be on the rise after being in a rut. The Sox have begun to recover after a horrid stretch, winning their last three consecutive series. We sit 2.5 games away from a wild card spot. The Huston Astros on the other hand have gone 40 and 20 since May 1st. They currently sit a half a game from a wild card spot. In the White corner, likely hailing from somewhere south of the equator, we have Miguel "The Rat Dog" Gonzalez. Sporting an intimidating set of sideburns and facial scruff - this man on a mission has been brilliant and then f***ing awful in his last two starts. The offense supporting him looks to heat up as summer temperatures continue rising. Things are clicking and aside from an injury to recent call up Matt Davidson, every man 1 through 9 believes they can mash today. Spark plug Adam Eaton has recently revealed this game will be dedicated to the injured Davidson and in homage to him, every batter will either strike out or hit a home run. In the Ugly Ass Uniform corner, hailing from a brew house in Milwaukee is some poor asshole who's mainly know for hitting Stanton in the face. A team comprised of a perennial league leader in hitting, a left handed masher, a young power hitting egotistical prick, and the Alex Rodriguez of the current generation - these guys got everything necessary to bust-a-move. Will the White Sox turn their season south and smack the moon men with a 55 pound slab of raw brisket? Will The Rat Dog throw a gem or give up 16 hits? Will Tim Anderson fly into the air revealing himself as the real life Superman? Will it ever stop? Yo, I don't know - turn off the lights, and I glow. To the extreme I rock a mic like a vandal... Blah blah blah... Something about a candle.... Blah blah blah... WICKED! hi8is take away - the white sox will win as this will be the third game they win and will signal their eventual record of 28 - 5 in their next 33 games. If this does not happen exactly as I foretold - then I will make a video of myself eating a 1,000 year old egg. Stop, hammer time. Or take spelling 101 -
hahn also announced that Greg will be sent down to the Charlotte Message board to work on his player analysis.
