Non-Tender Day
Vargas’ best defensive position is DH. But it is hard to count on a guy who hit .105 in a decent sample size with metrics that are as bad as you think. They gotta give him half a season, but as he is without options, he is a slow boat headed to DFA.

Non-Tender Day
Just asking the question. I think Vaughn is a fairly tough call when you have no credible replacement either in house or really on the market and a new hitting coach who may be able to help Vaughn. Your thought experiment was he's suddenly a decent offensive player. Obviously, if they think he is going to be as bad as he was last year, he's an obvious non-tender.

Non-Tender Day
Depends. What is the $ value of not being completely unwatchable for 2 years? It's not like they're going to use the money on something else. If a 2 WAR 1b helps you stay close to .500 a little longer into the season, maybe that $15 mil pays for itself while you develop other players? I'm pretty sure losing 120 games every year would not be good for the club's long-term financial health.

Thanks. IMHO: Orioles - Hell no. Phillies - No. Dodgers - Hell yeah. Red Sox - Sure, I guess. Cubs - No.

Soxfest back for 2025
Gotta keep the venue small or the collective negativity could open up a portal to the Upside Down.

Non-Tender Day
Nicky, Foster, and Lambert are already gone, so you're half right no matter what. I imagine they tender all the remaining relievers except De Los Santos and they tender Vaughn. Remember arb eligible players can be released in the Spring for a minuscule amount. Arb salaries are not guaranteed until the season starts.

Rule 5 Protection tomorrow
If I recall correctly, he injured his back from sitting too long on the flight from Japan.

Montgomery story...
Yes, but no one else has earned that job either, so... I wish him success whenever he reaches the bigs.

Rule 5 Protection tomorrow
I feel like between, Anderson, Scholtens, Varland, Wilson, Chuckie Robinson, Amaya, Sheets, Shewmake, and Corey Julks the Sox have plenty of flexibility before you even consider the possible non-tenders of De Los Santos, Sheets, and Vaughn. They can add anyone to this roster that they think is an upgrade all winter long.

Rule 5 Protection tomorrow
Thanks for the rundown. I would protect Montgomery, Carmela, and maybe one reliever. I feel like it would be hard for anyone to keep Vera’s rostered all year.

2024 MiLB Catch All
Looks like Zavala calmed the leg kick down a little bit. I still believe he is gonna have to ditch it. He had a bunch of trouble being on time this year despite running a lot of favorable counts.

Sox looking at building in South Loop
There is public transport now, but everything near a subway is getting huge apartment blocks built on it. There’s no huge tracts with good infrastructure nearby that is not already spoken for. The Dodgers would kill for the set up the Bears are rejecting in Arlington Heights.

Sammy Peralta and Nicky Lopez clear waivers & elect free agency
I think everything comes down to the evaluation of Vargas. Getz wanted a high end bat in any deal because the Sox have really struggled drafting/developing bats. He announced Vargas as a potential impact bat. So far, that prediction is horribly wrong. If Vargas, who is out of options, continues to hit .105 with almost no power and terrible defense, he will be DFA by July and the trade will go down as one of the worst in the team’s history. If he becomes an average mlb corner bat, it’s still a bad trade cuz they threw in Kopech. For me, Perez and Albertus are just guys. Maybe one of them will be an average regular 2b, but they are not going to save the deal.

If Baty came to the Sox and had a .750 OPS, I would suggest Fuller for canonization. But you have a good eye for prospects. Maybe I have undervalued Baty.

Good question. I always liked Vientos’ swing more than Baty’s. Obviously, Vientos isn’t exactly Matt Chapman at 3rd either. I wouldn’t have been on the “get him at all costs” train, but the sample sizes are vastly different. Baty has been given a lot of at bats and has shown very little. Vientos got sporadic time until this year. He played in about half the number of games by the end of last year that Baty already has under his belt. I live in NYC and watch a fair number of Mets’ games. I am convicted that Baty is not going to be an impact player. I did not feel that way about Vientos last year. But I will admit I did not see this break out coming.

Bohm is a nonstarter for the Sox. I also hope they are smart enough to avoid Brett Baty. The guy is not good at 3b and has a pretty good track record of not hitting in the majors. 1 Miguel Vargas is plenty, thanks.

2024 - MLB Draft Thread
Caglianone is gonna be an interesting follow. He doesn’t have the greatest profile of all time, but if he reaches his potential, Sox will be kicking themselves no matter how good Smith is.

Fire Chris Getz
I thought this was an awesome article. It shows that the Twins have a lot of talent, but projection systems have trouble predicting injuries and boneheaded manager decisions.

Roki Sasaki Free Agency - Dodgers vs Blue Jays for Roki's heart
The Dodgers likely knew this was coming as they have $2.5 mil in unspent international money, but the Sox also have a fairly large chunk. Maybe they can trade it to the Dodgers like they did in the Aldrin Batista deal. Or maybe they package Crochet and the cash and get like 4 players back. I think Sasaki wants to ba a Dodger. Might as well get something for that slot money.

I imagine the Riki Sasaki news eliminates the Dodgers from the Crochet derby. Too bad. I like their trio of hitters best of any of the teams involved.

Here's prospects I would be targeting as the lead player, if I were the Sox. Imagine they get one of the top guys, not multiples. Generally, I am against guys whose service time clocks have already statrted because the Sox won't stop sucking by the time they're in arbitration. Also, I'm looking for impact. My greatest fear is they trade Crochet to the Mets for Baty. Here goes: Dodgers: Zyhir Hope. (I'm a stan of this kid. Think he could be a star.) Josue DePaula. (Not a great athlete, there's some Lefty Eloy risk, but it really looks like he can hit.) Daulton Rushing. (I am not super in love with him. Probably is 1b for the Sox. Well-rounded hitter. Just not sure he'll ever be a star. Probably an upgrade on Vaughn, but Texas League and PCL numbers are always hard to read) Alex Freeland. (He can't be the lead piece for me. Would love him as the second guy in a trade) Mets: Ryan Clifford (There's a lot of both swing and miss and 1b risk with Clifford. But there's impact. Sox liked him in the draft. He's the only one of their top prospects I would like to get.) Jett Williams (Not a fan) Drew Gilbert (Also not a fan) Phillies: Aidan Miller. (Just reminds me of what a bad pick Jacob Gonzalez was. But he's gonna hit and he'll be a decent defender somewhere in the infield even if he doesn't stick at short. Would be pleased if he was the lead piece) Justin Crawford. (There's a lot to like. Oozes tools. Good defender. Unlike his dad he's got a good arm. Hits the ball on the ground a TON. If you're really convinced in your new hitting guy, maybe you take an upside shot?) Andrew Painter (The only pitcher from any of these teams I'd even consider taking. But not gonna happen) Red Sox: Roman Anthony has been one of my favorite players in the minors since the day he was drafted. Not gonna get him. Braden Montgomery (Not a switch-hitter really, but a good defender with a huge arm. Possibly blocked by Anthony. He's a risk because there are hit tool questions. But the Sox have to get upside here and the power is legit) Kristian Campbell (There are position questions and upside questions. You may be buying high on one good year. That said, he consistently did damage all year long and is a hell of an athlete. He's gonna be a decent defender somewhere.) I would not consider a trade with Wilyer Abreu as the headliner. For me, the upside is just not there, but we'll see what everyone's offering. Finally, I don't believe they should trade Crochet unless they get at least one top guy. 4 B prospects would be a disastrous result.

Is that something you heard? Or something you want? Lux has only 2 more years of control. Getting him at all makes little sense. Getting him by giving up one of our 2 decent assets seems kinda insane, but it wouldn't be the worst trade we've made with the Dodgers in the last 3 months. Nightengale says Phillies and Dodgers favorites for Crochet. I know he's not mlb-ready, but I do like Hope.

I would argue that Fedde and Kopech aren’t in the same stratosphere of value as Miguel Vargas, but here we are.

I get he’s of limited value to the Sox, but I like watching Crochet pitch. If they can get a top guy (Zyhir Hope?), absolutely, do the deal. Miguel Vargas-type? I would keep him.
