Not sure Gilbert is on the market and neither Bieber nor Glasnow has Cease's value. They are both in their last year of control. And anyone who points to Cease's loss of velo ought to look at Bieber. He's lost 3+ mph over the last few years. That's without considering his arm injury at the end of the year. He's buyer beware as far as I'm concerned.

Rule 5 Draft - Sox take LHP Shane Drohan from Boston
Timmy U replied to bmags's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Romy is a plus defensive 2b. Much better over there than Remillard. That said, I would be fine releasing either of them or both. -
And I thought I was the low man on Gonzalez. Hope he and his weird swing prove us all wrong.

Rough way to find out the Adam Haseley era is over.

Law had a one game look. Hardly definitive. Colson also didn’t hit in that look, doesn’t mean you should question the bat.

Rule 5 Draft - Sox take LHP Shane Drohan from Boston

Sox have no slots open to draft somebody, right? They have really committed to some questionable AAAA bullpen arms. -
Seby Zavala traded to Mariners (old friend alert)
Timmy U replied to WestEddy's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Getz has dumped a bunch of questionable major leaguers and added a bunch of questionable major leaguers in his year zero churn. I doubt Seby, or Suarez for that matter, would make much of a difference. With Grifol at the helm, this team might lose 110 games. -
Big difference trading Cease and Robert. Cease has 2 years of control and is coming off a down year. Robert won a Silver Slugger and finished top 3 for a Gold Glove with 4 years of control. Robert is so valuable, he’s close to untradeable. That’s why they’re saying he’s not available.

I don’t think BB was taking a shot at his disability, but the “like a normal person” is very unfortunate turn of phrase. When your job involves managing talent, which probably means ego, you can’t say s*** like that.

I think Soroka is probably done. I mean, no one the Sox got is what you call good, but maybe the garbage they just added is better than the garbage that was already in the 40 man? Clearly, a team this bad doesn’t need Aaron Bummer, and he will benefit from getting away from their putrid defense. I wonder if Fraser Ellard has an outside shot of being an okay pen piece.

Ha ha. I guess we're keeping Cease. I despise the concept of Jonathan India (45 hit/50 power/35 field/70 flow) as even part of a trade. Verdugo would replace Clevinger/D-Bo as the embarrassing guy to root for. (Google it.) Donovan probably is a 4th of/platoon bat. I mean, he's not horrible, but c'mon. I do love his similarity through age 26 to Hoot Evans.

I'd non-tender a ton of guys off this horrible roster. These are 31 guys I'd protect: Banks, lhp Bummer, lhp Juan Carela, rhp Cease, rhp Crochet, lhp Jake Eder, LHP Deivi Garcia, rhp Kopech, rhp Lambert, rhp Davis Martin, rhp Christian Mena, rhp Lane Ramsey, rhp Sammy Peralta, lhp Gregory Santos, rhp Jesse Scholtens, rhp Matt Thompson, rhp Touki Toussaint, rhp Korey Lee, c Carlos Perez, c Romy Gonzalez, 2b/ss/of #Moncada, 3b Bryan Ramos, 3b Popeye Rodriguez, 2b/ss *Sheets, 1b/of Sosa, 2b/ss *Colas, of Jimenez, of Robert, of Vaughn, 1b *Benintendi, of Wilfred Veras, of

Small world. I was at that game too.

From what I have seen of Montgomery, the danger of signing DeJong is Colson beats him out in the spring. Because of his plate discipline, Montgomery's floor's pretty high. Not hard to see him hitting .220 and still being way better than DeJong. As far as Popeye and Sosa are concerned, their complete inability to control the strike zone may be a no no to the new regime. The last thing the Sox need is more guys who won't take a walk.

The amount of 1b profile at the top of this draft is terrifying. When you add two other top picks with 2b profiles, this is not the draft you want to be picking super high in. Especially with that f-ed up new top 6 rule.

$8 mil was the number Counsell was going for. Good for him to get it. Stays in the Midwest, too. I'm sure he's thrilled. Ross probably cost the Cubs 10 games in the standings this year based on run differential, so it's a good hire. Doesn't affect the Sox in any way, though. They weren't going to hire a new manager anyway. They have Pedro to build culture by losing 110 games.

2024 Offseason Plan - "Try" to Compete Edition
Timmy U replied to ChiSox59's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Maybe it's possible? The Brewers and the Diamondbacks didn't hit a ton of HR and they still made the playoffs, but of the top 10 in HR 7 made the playoffs including 7 of the top 8. Only the Angels missed. RH was not wrong, ball go far, team go far. -
Rosario is a BAD defender. He is the last thing this team needs. That said, I have no idea how they're going to fill out the roster. They may hold tryouts at the park district.
-
It's not just the pitching staff. I think the Sox have got like 10 legit big leaguers on their entire roster, and not all of them are good. (Bummer, Cease, Kopech?, Crochet?, Santos?, TA, Moncada, Vaughn, Benintendi, Eloy.) The other 26 guys are a mix of prospects and roster fillers. Mostly the latter.
-
Dodgers did not pick up Lance Lynn's $1 million option cuz homers. Nastrini pretty good pick up for half season of that.
-
It's amazing how many managers are going to be available/fired, and yet Pedro Grifol has the job security of a Supreme Court Justice. Btw, isn't Counsell gonna end up on the Mets?
-
Are you talking about the 2024 first round pick aka Travis Bazzana? Or do you mean this year's pick? Cuz Jacob Gonzalez is a long way from a sure thing.
-
I really wish they had given up prospects at the deadline for him. His leadership could have been vital in their drive to lose over 100 games.
-
Will be interesting to see if Sox pitching lab fixes Eder, though he did not seem broken until he got to Birmingham. Bannister may be the most important offseason acquisition the Sox could make unless they were willing to step up to the plate and sign Bellinger.
