Are we allowed to get nervous about Moncada at this point?
QUOTE (ron883 @ Sep 20, 2017 -> 11:01 AM) As good as fulmers numbers have looked, I don't have faith in him. He'll be lucky to be a successful reliever. Id love for him to make me eat crow, but I don't forsee that happening. Yeah I hope his success continues.

The Era of the No-Good, Very Bad Home Run Hitter
QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 20, 2017 -> 10:13 AM) He's a better looking Adam Dunn who hits less homers and gets hurt more. And draws significantly less walks.

QUOTE (ron883 @ Sep 20, 2017 -> 10:18 AM) Any money given to Harvey comes out of a potential Machado contract. No thanks. Not at all actually because Harvey is a free agent after next year along with Machado. Not advocating for Harvey though unless the Mets gave him away for basically nothing which they could do if they are trying to win next year.

2017 Minor League Catch-All thread
QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Sep 19, 2017 -> 11:49 AM) From Longenhagen's chat today: Dooduh 12:18 Name 5 minor league catchers you see as ML regulars 5 years from now (not counting Mejia). Eric A Longenhagen 12:21 I'll say Sisco, Collins, Stephenson, Haase, Trevino Anthony 12:23 So at this time last year you hyped up Acuna as a potential top 10 guy a year from now. Anyone you could see making that type of jump this timev around? Eric A Longenhagen 12:24 Yeah, I had him in the 30s on the overall top 100 last offseason (I think?) so I'll look to that range on my SUmmer 100 for a name... 12:25 I could see a breakout Leody Taveras year or a summer of Luis Robert raking through three levels happening. Hope he's right

QUOTE (joejoedairy @ Sep 19, 2017 -> 04:26 PM) With this in mind, anyone think Herm/Coop could bring Matt Harvey back to life? I don't know what his exact contract situation is but he definitely needs a change of scenery. Free agent after next year.

Reds Claim DJ Peterson from White Sox
QUOTE (ptatc @ Sep 19, 2017 -> 04:04 PM) I don't recall that ever happening. I think it was actually the prior year he was in the rotation but there was a point where they had a 6-man rotation one season. Whoever was supposed to throw side work that day would sit in the pen as an extra reliever. I think it was Peavy who came into a game in like the 3rd inning and ended up pitching 2-3 innings and getting a win. Looking at it now, the 2011 team had Buehrle, Peavy, Floyd, Danks, Jackson, and Phil Humber throw at least 19 games. It wasn't all season, but they did have a 6-man rotation going at some point. I'm about to leave work but can check game logs later.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 19, 2017 -> 01:34 PM) Yes, but there will be injuries, innings limits, and more crap in the bullpen which will have to be swapped out. Well it was what I said along with what the guy above me said.

2018 pitching staff
QUOTE (ptatc @ Sep 19, 2017 -> 01:20 PM) I don't think so. I think the rotation will be much more stable. They will keep Rodon, Lopez and Giolito the whole season and let them learn. Shields is signed and I don't think anyone wants him in a trade so unless he is truly awful they will keep him as well. That's 4 that will be consistent, barring injury. That alone will cut down on the number of changes on the staff. Also likely won't trade nearly as many guys.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 19, 2017 -> 01:00 PM) A few wild guesses for signings and invites: SP Hector Santiago Clay Buchholz RP Zach Duke Joe Blanton Ernesto Freiri Plus some unknown MiLB free agents and wire claims. Nice guesses. I'll also guess someone like Fernando Rodney to close.

They could also go 8-deep in the pen again like this year. Depends on how much versatility is on the bench between the 2 non-catcher spots.

Holy hell the price of new phones these days...I have a Galaxy S6 that I guess I will hold onto for as long as I can as the phones never seem to really upgrade enough to warrant the price.

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Sep 19, 2017 -> 12:03 PM) This is more a continuation of Wite's point about Beck & Covey in the Rick Hahn thread. How many spots are available on the 2018 roster for "Let Coop Work On 'Em" guys? For sure: Rodon Lopez Giolito Shields Nate Jones? I guess there's tons of room for: Fulmer Fry Bummer Beck Covey Minaya Infante Holmberg They can't all make it, but most of this garbage can have a spot if the Sox choose. I could see Covey going to the Charlotte rotation now that he's Sox property. Covey I bet will be in Charlotte if I had to guess. That would make 12 but I also assume there will be a couple cheap veteran signings for the pen. Also, Petricka is missing (though can't really be counted on to stay healthy but neither can Jones).

Trade avi in the offseason?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 19, 2017 -> 10:23 AM) If he can stay healthy sure. The really good news is that because of his lack of health, his contract now has a minimum wage year in it. Wow. Just saw that on baseball reference. For the 2019 season.

Reds Claim DJ Peterson from White Sox
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 19, 2017 -> 09:55 AM) Historically that sounds nothing like the White Sox. They will try everything they can to get these guys stretched to a full season. If they have dead arm periods they will either be skipped or they will be DL'd and replaced. The White Sox typically push guys to get their innings if at all possible. Does anyone remember which season the Sox used a 6-man rotation for a decent amount of the year? Was it Sale's first year in the rotation?

2017 2nd Wildcard Thread
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Sep 19, 2017 -> 09:17 AM) ESPN has a good double header this evening. Twinkies @ Yankees 5:00CT and then Cleveland @ Angels 8:00CT. They also have a triple header lined up for Wednesday making for a full day of baseball. Damn. Wish I was off work to watch and relax. I really need a day to just watch some exciting baseball. I'll admit, outside of the games I've been to this year, I honestly haven't watched much of the Sox or any other baseball this year for that matter, even though I've followed our team and all the moves we've made and read this site everyday.

Are we allowed to get nervous about Moncada at this point?
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 18, 2017 -> 05:09 PM) He was called up when the bullpen was in shambles. I still believe it was #3 of Rick Hahn's desperation moves - James Shields (and a freebie in Miguel Gonzalez) to save his competitive rotation, Tim Anderson to save his competitive infield, and we need bullpen help and we're a competitive team so why not? They might have had the other part cross their minds, but Rick Hahn spent a full month making desperation moves and we're still wishing we had 1 of them back. You can also add in the Zack Burdi pick as a "go for it move" as I believe they were hoping he could provide a shot in the arm late in the season during a potential post-season run. Had they had already decided to rebuild at that point, I'm sure they would have taken a starter or position player there.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 19, 2017 -> 09:12 AM) Guys never seem to come all the way back after that Thoracic Outlet surgery. Its a shame that it happened to him so early in his career That Mets staff could have been so fun to watch the last couple years and the next few. It's a shame none of them can stay healthy.

QUOTE (Real @ Sep 19, 2017 -> 12:22 AM) wouldn't surprise me if they go with a 6-man at some point next year, maybe not for the full year but perhaps to start the season or start the all-star break Wouldn't surprise me either. Ese everyone into a full year.

2017 Video Game Thread
QUOTE (Tony @ Sep 14, 2017 -> 09:10 AM) There is a resale shop on the North Side called People Play Games that has a slim for 60, and they have both games for like 1.95 each. I may just pull the trigger, ha I'm really into the Resident Evil series and the only games I was never able to play growing up were the Outbreak games. I keep hoping they will become available for cheap on PSN along with ability to play online but it doesn't seem like that will ever happen.

Reds Claim DJ Peterson from White Sox
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 18, 2017 -> 09:47 AM) The writing was on the wall when the White Sox didn't even recall him despite being on the 40 man roster. Yep. Then you factor in that they'll need to make room for the few guys on the 60-day dl soon along with anyone who may need to be added protected from the Rule 5 draft.

QUOTE (Wanne @ Sep 16, 2017 -> 09:29 PM) hahaaa...oh I'm sure he would. So you don't believe Narvaez nor Smith have cost the Sox pitchers strikes this year, or catchers in previous years for that matter?

Reds Claim DJ Peterson from White Sox
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Sep 18, 2017 -> 08:33 AM) the Sox have a bunch of position players who auditioned this season...many of them look the same. They can bring them all back - most of them earned another year - but who is going to pitch for this organization next year? I wonder if they can't trade a couple for some young 5th starter/bullpen types. Well your rotation is probably Rodon, Lopez, Giolito, Shields, veteran cheap signing to open the year (Shields or this guy dumped for Kopech). Bullpen, some of the guys we currently have in it plus probably a veteran signing or two like Fernando Rodney, Drew Storen, etc along with other minor league signings.

2017 Cubs Catch-all thread
QUOTE (Wanne @ Sep 15, 2017 -> 03:10 PM) sorry...didn't think it was even close regardless of badly Contreras framed it. When you have to backhand a ball that's low and away?...that's a strike now? But it was right down the middle. It doesn't really matter what you think if its clearly over haha its not about where the catcher catches it.
