Yeah. He seemed like a genuinely good person, or at least someone who tried to be and recognized his own shortcomings. His shows and his writing were as much social commentary as they were about food.

  • It's interesting as you get older and celebrities that impacted your life pass away, there's definitely more of a connection and shock. Impacted would have sounded funny to me years ago, and mayb

Remember when MTV would bleep out or block "Let's roll, another joint" in the music video?

And I'm with buhbuh, I remember Learning to Fly from that 91 Bulls championship video

That's the song I heard, and I immediately thought of the Bulls.

This is crazy. I was driving yesterday and heard a Petty song. I started thinking about this thread and had the idea of starting a thread which would be in advance of a celebrity death. The idea being to pay tribute to them before they die, rather than the usual response to their death.

I was going to start it with Tom Petty. He spans my memories from late grammar school through my early 20s. Some great music. Unique voice and sound. Then, I thought it was a little morbid.

There are more obvious names that people would name, but I thought Petty was a good one because he flies a little under the radar. I'm seriously bummed seeing that he died.

Some artists just speak to you. It took until my adulthood for it to happen with Petty, but once it did, it was a pretty big connection. There aren't too many more artists I will be this sad about when they go... Paul McCartney is the only one I can think of off of the top of my head.

There is just such an amazing body of work with Petty, and such a straightforward style. His music didn't need to be cleaned up for radio, his voice wasn't the thing you think of as radio friendly even though he has a face made for radio, etc. But the guitar work and the lyrics made him stand up on his own. Damn. Wildflowers and Full Moon Fever are just spectacular rock albums made after the era of rock he belonged to, yet they still stood out. The work he did in the two Wilbury's albums both stands out on for his own contributions, yet together defines the concept of Supergroup to a T. RIP.

Mother f***er! Son of a b****! Not Tom!!!!

f*** you 2017!!!

I'll be back when I cool the f*** off. f***!!!

Agreed. Just an outstanding rock group (person) for a long time. Damn the torpedoes was one of the first albums I purchased on my own. "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" is a a classic.

RIP. Last dance with Mary Jane TP :cheers

f*** this year, seriously.

Cheers to that. :cheers

Two favorite songs from my youth were American Girl and You Got Lucky. IMHO, Tom never wrote a bad tune, all of them were great. Damn, this hurts. :crying

One more time, f*** you 2017!

Yeah, but they are saying his family has a DNR order and it's only a matter of time.

He did a lot of work with Johnny Cash towards the end of his life, too. I think he was the main guitarist on a couple of the America albums in the 90's and early 00's.

Totally agree, he was a funny, funny dude. Marc Maron re-posted a podcast with him from 2012 that was a good listen.

Forgive my rant ... just saw one of Jerry Lewis' sons on TV. I think there were 4-5 boys from his first marriage, maybe 3-4. He left them NO MONEY. He left everything to his second wife and his daughter from that marriage.

I know Lewis probably has reasons to be pissed at his first wife, but that's just bulls*** for a celebrity dad to not at the very least toss each of his boys $1 million. He'd still make his point. I mean ... again, from all I've read the boys were just normal kids. Yes a couple have blasted Jerry in interviews while Jerry was alive, but isn't he a big boy who can take it? Very sad to give his own flesh and blood nothing. If I were the second wife and daughter I'd give each of them $1 million. It's only right.

RIP Chuck Mosley, former Faith No More front man. Was singer for their first two albums including the song ' We Care a Lot' which is the theme for Mike Rowe's Dirty Jobs. Another from my youth is gone, sad panda.
