That wasnt a speed of the game issue.  That was just lazy mechanics.   He was upright and unathletic.  He played it glove side and had more of a chance to get in front of it.  He assumed the ball would stay down.

Because he's too slow to react and lacks lateral agility.  Hard to have good mechanics when you're just that unathletic.
