There are several players they could have signed to prevent themselves from going to replacement level production the second someone got hurt. The Padres have arguably the best SS and utility player in the game but still managed to sign Profar & Kim Ha-seong. Paxton being one primary example. One year rentals would have been a good strategy in this case. Lastella and Gonzalez were easily and readily available.
