In theory they could have been.

Judging things in hindsight is fallacious. Even if Cease does ok this year, we absolutely should have sought another starter. 

I want to win in the playoffs, not just make it there. But talent aside, you still need depth to make it there and we don't have any.

I would rather they experience the injuries now than later in the season. The West Coast has never been kind to the Sox anyways even when we had some really good teams.
