How can a guy who hasn't played a full MLB season be considered an everyday top player for years to come? It seems like at a minimum he should prove he could do it once in his life before receiving that designation.  He's played 29 games in one season and 54 in another, had serious injuries in both,  and folks want to pen him in the starting lineup for the next five years?

2021 seems like a good year to contend for a title. Maybe 2022 or 2023 with a healthy Nick would have been a better chance. Most of us have watched enough baseball to know things change drastically from year to year. This year is much more certain than next. Go all in.

Kimbrel is a Sox next year, too.

Rays and Cubs talked through a Glasnow for Bryant and Kimbrel deal.

Glasnow only has 2 years of control left after this year and he's going to have TJS. While that deal looks crazy, it doesn't make a whole of sense for the Cubs. They'd basically be hoping he comes back in a year and they can deal him in the 2022 off-season or at the deadline in 2023.

It is interesting that both the Sox and Rays styled deals around injured players that might be coming on a discount.  I wonder if that was intentional strategy based on Cubs asking prices, or if there was hive mind going on there.

I was surprised to learn how many deals start from "are you interested in x and what do you have to give?". Not will you trade x for y?

And since the Sox ane Cubs had two deals going was one done first because the Cubs had more offers or the Sox had others opportunities? It seems both had to be going on simultaneously.

Hahn said Friday several teams were interested in Kimbrel on Thursday, so it made sense to finalize the Tepera deal and let the Kimbrel deal work itself out before the deadline.

Anyone ever spill the beans about these eyebrow raising Madrigal stories that are apparently out there.....?

Too bad Hahn didn't do a switcheroo on the Cubs, including the other Madrigal, the relief pitcher, not the second sacker.  Sort of like the the old Berry Berry affair.

He was also hurt when they drafted him.

Perhaps Nick confronted The Stone Pony for his pornographic past (Playgirl). This may explain Steve Stone's post-trade comments trashing Madrigal on the Score. :D

https://www.audacy.com/670thescore/podcasts/parkins-spiegel-show-63/spiegel-rongey-steve-stone-intervew-hour-3-601202086

Starts at 15:45 mark. I actually thought the comments were fair and accurate, but many here took umbridge at the following comments:

  • "When you're making a trade, the best trade you make is when you might know something  about a guy, that other people don't know."
  • "You see how close they are to their ceiling, and know that that ceiling is not going to advance beyond where it is now."
  • "I believe that he was over-drafted at first round, fourth pick in the draft. I  think that's too high for him, because I think he's an adequate, at best defender. I thought he would run the bases better, he didn't. Look, he's a really good hitter who is not going to be impactful. Because of his size, everybody wanted to liken him to Pedroia, or Altuve. He's not going to be Pedroia or Altuve. That's just not the way he swings."
  • "When you're 1-4, you gotta be a stud. Nick is not a stud. Nick is a good player, but again, you're going to have some situations defensively where you're going to look and say "you know what, the arm isn't all that good. The judgement might not be great."

What stories are you referring to? I know Stoney ripped him, but that's about it.

A couple of our insiders have said he was somewhat of an oddball who didn't fit in  inside the clubhouse. Maybe the Mr. 3000  t shirts were more than a humorous  little jab at him

One of those "insiders" went as far as to say he wonders if those stories will start to leak now...insinuating he knew what they were.

Tyler Johnson resigned to a MiLB deal.

Cubs will win the deal long term but it’ll be worth it if we win the WS this season. Everyone probably agrees with this POV,

Cesar Hernandez at 2B makes the Madrigal for Kimbrel trade easier to accept, at least  until Hernandez' contract is up next year. Hernandez defense and home run power make me wonder why Cleveland let the Sox get him. Now , with the return of our starting  LFer , CFer, and hopefully catcher, we are going to be ready to roll at just the right time.

One of those “insiders“ also as an irrational pretty creepy hatred for all things Madrigal.

I'll never understand this trade. The Sox trade Madrigal, who if he stays healthy, will probably hit .300+ for many years to come, for a 33 year-old, ineffective set-up man. Where's the logic in such a move?
