Cody Bellinger to the Cubs

Ideally Yeolki Cespedes comes in with some improvement and can be a 4th outfielder. He looks like a good option defensively, just need some offense.

Exactly. Not too exciting of a prospect but maybe he can be a useful MLB bench piece. Definitely can compete with whatever cheap depth right-handed 4th OF depth options they bring in to spring training.

Bellinger sucks. Already hoping too many guys bounce back as is.

  • They’re really nothing alike. At least Bellinger has legitimate value in the field and base paths. Dunn had none.

  • Well one is a free agent and the other will be wanted by more than one team and you've called this farm trash. I think we should get Julio Rodriguez. Guy seems really good. Way better than Bellin

All true, but they cannot go into next season with him as the 1A plan in the minors if/when someone goes down. Make him earn the call up.

If we had more money to spend I'd love a better backup CF... But that's the problem... Maybe grab Engel on a minors deal if possible.

see above.

Just watched Sean Casey on MLBN talking about Bellinger, and he is probably the most positive guy on the network. He also had shoulder surgery and said when he saw Bellinger after his surgery  swing, he said oh no. Says lthe shoulder surgery slowed his bay speed and has done the same with Bellinger. Dan ODowd said he hoped he could get back closer to what he was but said you have to have low expectations.  A change of scenery is probably good, because he probably will never be the same.

In this case the change of scenery might involve selling shoes at Thom McAnn.

from an espn guesstimates article:

Gonzalez: Cody Bellinger, Yankees, one year, $22 million. If Bellinger is only going to accept a one-year deal -- and that's the plan, his agent, Scott Boras, told The Athletic -- then a nice bidding war is going to play out, and a team might have to kick in a lucrative 2024 player option as a sweetener. Bellinger needs to go to a team that possesses the resources to give him the best chance to recapture who he was. A short porch in right field helps, too.

my prediction is heyman will leak that the teams that spend the most will all be in the mix for a boras client.

Interesting from them. Curious that this basically is tantamount to saying "The Dodgers valued this player incorrectly as his arbitration deal could have been moved in a trade if they are able to sign Judge/Nimmo."

Thank you for sharing that one.

$22M? Woof.

Even Boras can't pull that off.

yeah, that is absurd. not interested at anything over 14 mil at absolute most.

We do not know the physiological basis for his projected improvement. Bad investment.

Wasn’t Bellinger’s arb figure less than this?

The Dodgers attempted to trade Bellinger before the tender deadline but obviously nothing came of it. Him doing better than the ~18-20M he was estimated to receive in arb would be a pretty big surprise.

Quote

“Friedman also acknowledged that the Dodgers pursued a potential trade that would have brought them some return for Bellinger before making him a free agent but “obviously, the non-tender meant that we didn’t line up on anything.”

Interesting prediction from Olney on Pollock's next contract in that article as well

Olney: AJ Pollock, Giants, two years, $20 million. The Giants love their platoons, and Pollock wrecks left-handed pitching (.935 OPS vs. lefties in 2022). Plus he knows the division so well.

2/$20M? Yeah right.

I don't think that sounds too crazy given his history and super strong 2021.

Seems the cubs have been linked to everyone

Here's a name sure to freak out the board. Jorge Soler.

He's got ties to the Royals and Grifol, the talks of how he had his best years under the Royals/hitting instruction, the fact that the marlins match up quite well in terms of trade partners, and the fact we know hahn wants to go after power.

Now, he doesn't grade well in the OF, but it's not something I'd rule out in terms of throwing him in the mix at LF, RF, DH rotation.

You have to consider his salary, and the ability to use that salary as a sweetener while maybe looking at a controllable arm that can slot in for Giolito. I could definitely see a trade where we go after a Trevor Rogers, Jorge Soler and then turn around and trade Giolito to another team for a piece. Just a thought, and something I wouldn't be surprised has been kicked around.

Have a feeling these are the type of moves you'll see this offseason rather than getting in the mix on a guy like Belly.

For a team that's rumored to be operating on a limited budget, I would not be a fan of that. He's not much of an OFer and does nothing to help address the lineup balance. He'd be perfect for the Sox 16" softball team though.

Kelly + Garcia for Soler? White Sox take on long term money but clear out 2 roster spots. Not particularly balanced due to the extra 2023 money for Soler but if we're being crazy?

Can he play a passable LF?  If Miami wanted to trade him for Sox overpaid garbage, sure, but I don’t see why they would.

There is perhaps 1 player in baseball where Soler would be an OF upgrade compared to him - Andrew Vaughn.

Soler is awful out there. He is, on average, worse than Eloy.

If the Marlins could clear the last 2 years off of that contract without having to take a comparable amount of money back, I would imagine they would do so quite willingly.
