Still pisses me off that the Sox tanked a whole season only to draft Madrigal. Who in thier right minds would ever draft a college player with a top 5 pick that can barely hit the ball 400 feet during batting practice? The guy is also one of the worst baserunners I have ever seen.

Whoever scouted and signed off on the Madrigal pick hopefully is no longer employed by the White Sox.

The scouting reports billed Madrigal as a generational hitter like Tony Gwynn Sr. or Rod Carew at the draft. That guy is ok to take at 4th overall. When he got to the minors and they started talking like he was a guarantee to hit only .280, then the bust radar went up. The issue is that the bats took him from 40 grade power with aluminum to 25 grade power with wood.

Not sure Vaughn was the greatest option either. 6' 1B has a limited ceiling. SP, CF, SS are where your value is.

Imagine looking at Burger and seeing the next Nolan Arenando.

Seriously? Do you have any links to a scouting report that links Madrigal to the OG Tony Gywnn? Any kid with that kind of bat profile is likely getting picked 1:1 straight out of high school and has no need for college baseball.

It was never ever okay to take Madrigal with a top 5 pick.

Probably promoted.

Might have turned out better if he was in a better organization.

I don't ever remember a comparison to Gwynn, but I think the term "elite bat to ball skills" was used quite a bit. Little did we know that their definition of that was elite [weak] bat to ball skills.

Not that it's worth defending Madrigal, but the ~111 wRC+ he put up while on the Sox is very good. That number would be top 10 at 2nd base pretty much every year. The biggest issue was he couldn't/can't stay on the field and his defense was below what we were expecting from him. But he hit well in the minors and was objectively a good hitter on the Sox even if people want to fixate exclusively on the lack of power.

In looking for things the Sox do well. They consistently underwhelm fans this time of year. Doesn't matter if they come off a WS season or the second most disappointing season in over 125 years of baseball in Chicago. Completely lukewarm.

Agreed. We were sold that he was a gold glove defender.

An NFL style trade down would be nice in that situation.

I was giving examples of actual generational hitters and Madrigal was billed as having that type of upside coming out of Oregon St.
