Have to side with the Sox/CPD on this one.  Sending 20000 out of the building TOWARDS where they believe the shot came from, while rumors started spreading of a shooter could have caused a horrible panic costing many lives.  Nobody died, nobody seriously hurt, therefore correct response.

WHAT!!! How DARE you introduce common sense into this!!

Chicago has more murders than anywhere else in the country and it's not even close. The per capita stuff is ridiculous when the cities being compared are far closer in population to a single Chicago neighborhood than Chicago itself. Austin the neighborhood has 100k people and would be statistically the dangerous place in the Western world if you isolated it out. Its ridiculous to use some affluent northshore area to ignore stuff like that. Philly is really the only place that compares to Chicago on the whole. That said Bridgeport is awesome. There's some shitty places around it though. You don't want it's rep slipping because other idiots around it.

By that same logic, if you take Englewood and Austin out of Chicago, it would be the safest big city in the country.

You could actually take those two out and Chicago would still have far and away the most murders of any city. Would still have 170 more murders than New York for example.

NYC has become a massive outlier amongst American cities over the last 25 years. We both know that. You're still 3x more likely to be murdered in New Orleans and St Louis and 2x more likely to be murdered in Memphis, Cleveland or Baltimore.

Edit: Worth noting this article is from 2022 and uses FBI stats pre-pandemic (the earliest available at the time of publication).

But the narrative existed long before then.

These arguments are always per capita vs overall numbers. 800 murders a year is gonna jump out at people.

Do you agree once violent activity hits the stadiums for sporting events (i.e. bullets), it's all over for spectator sports? They'll just be shown on TV with no fans? Sure there are always fisticuffs at games but bullets will provide a different outcome. I would think there would be ways to sneak guns into games. Maybe security will sniff out all guns.

I could only guess.

It's really unfortunate that White Sox fans propagate this myth. The city was more violent in the 70's, 80's, and 90's. Bridgeport, specifically, is a far better place to live, or watch a game, than it was even 20 years ago.

I live right there. The violence creeps in no matter how nice the neighborhood is. The shooters remain the same, just more mobile.

Yeah, but it's true for any city. Take out Englewood and Austin and Chicago still has far more murders than anywhere else. And to my original point, all of those places you listed are closer in population to a Chicago neighborhood than they are to Chicago on the whole, which is why I find these comparisons nonsensical. Anyways the best way for Chicago to fix its reputation is to become less violent. If NYC can do it, we can do it too. That's my final say on the topic. Rather get back to this individual story.

Update on Second City Cop:

Quote

UPDATE: this is a stretch...but the media is going to roll with it:

  • A bullet that struck two women at a Chicago White Sox game on Friday evening may have landed inside the ballpark after being fired about a mile away.

That’s the current line of thinking among Chicago cops tasked with investigating the incident, which unfolded a little before 7:30 p.m. as the Sox were blistered by the Oakland Athletics.

The CWB report even has an alleged photo of the bullet. Looks to be 9mm or smaller, but by golly, the Department tracked down a "shotspotter" incident a mile away and is going to claim it came from there.

Any physics majors reading? We know a 9mm can travel upwards of two miles in optimal conditions, but in thick, humid air, 600 feet above sea level, launched at what angle to clear a wall that's four or five stories high.....

Color us skeptical.

This from the Second City comment section.

Quote

Here’s the breakdown as it was told to my by police on scene.

Obese woman hides a gun in a fold of fat. The woman then attempted to discretely remove this firearm and it discharged striking her in the leg and then an innocent gets grazed in the stomach. Extremely embarrassing for the Sox and their security staff.

Consistent with reports yesterday that those involved were released from (or escorted out of) the stadium, as the perp and the woman she was with were transported to area hospitals.

Far more likely than the magic bullet theory 2.0 from a mile away, especially if casings were found.

Give this excuse all you want it’s still wrong.

Common sense is not “there should be hundreds of big events nationwide per week and it’s impossible to evacuate any of them in an emergency so you just let things play out and hope tons aid people don’t die.” Common sense is not “there might be a gun on site but let’s hope there isn’t because if there is we are helpless. “ How many events this week nationwide had 20,000 people present? You have to be able to evacuate this in minutes without a crowd crush, it is seriously rule number 1. Concert venues know this, stadiums know this. If you do not have procedures for this then you will lose millions in the negligence lawsuit from the families of your victims.

Common sense should be “this is what we trained for people, this is why we have well trained and well paid staff. If we have to move everyone out we can do it safely in a few minutes, a crowd rush is not a concern. Is it 100% certain that it is safe to keep people in this facility or not?

If you did not know where the shot came from, then the answer to that question is no. If this turns into an active shooter situation because someone has a gun that is way worse as you cannot manage the crowd rush in that scenario. If they thought it was 100% safe, why did they move family members?

Nobody saw a weapon in the ballpark.  If this was an active shooter in the park someone, anyone would have seen the weapon.

So send 20000 from a secured area with metal detectors with no indication of a weapon into a completely unsecured area which was possibly where the shooter was based.

They moved family members because they could be moved to a more secure area.  I would assume MLB has specific rules for player families.  There is no area in GRF more secure that holds 20000.  Certainly not the parking lots and street around the park.

As of a few years ago CPD figures showed the area around "Wrigleyville" actually had more crime reported than the area around Sox park. And it was just a few years ago a person was murdered right outside of the Wrigley Field area, I remember reading about it in the newspapers.

I am not sure I have read a thread on any forum, ever, that displays as much ignorance towards as many topics, as I've seen in this thread. Fucking bravo Soxtalk. Bravo.

Chicago is not a dangerous city for 99% of the population. Period. And nobody who has actually traveled around this country would even remotely consider Chicago "unsafe". Especially compared to rural America... Try driving through bumfuck Alabama, Northern Florida, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, and come back and talk to me. When I broke down in "the hood", I had folks come out of their "crackhouses" offering to help me out... When that happened in rural Alabama, I had fucking meth heads carrying shotguns, trying to extort me for assistance in changing a fucking tire, because we happened to have a flat in their shithole town. f*** right off with the "Democrat run cities are cesspools of violence" s%*#, because nobody who actually leaves their safety bubble in the suburbs, believes it.

P.S. Six of the top ten most likely to be murdered cities in this country, are in Missouri, Ohio, and Louisiana. Buy a clue.

I travel about 10,000 every year across America. Your ignorance of rural America matches others of urban America.

Yes, there are crimes everywhere. I've felt very safe in Chicago and in small towns across the country. Poverty and lack of opportunities are a greater predictor of crime in an area than political parties or population density.

We broke down about 5 years ago in Central Florida on a rural road in the middle of nowhere when my engine froze up. We had to wait almost 3 hours in 95 degree heat before AAA arrived. I couldn’t believe how many people in their cars stopped to see if they could help us in anyway, I thought for sure someone would come along and rob us, it brought back my faith in humanity.

I went to the game last night. As I was  walking towards the park a young woman from a radio station approached me and asked if I would like to be interviewed. Naturally i said yes. She asked me if I knew about the shooting that occured the previous night at the game. I said yes I knew about it. She then said, aren't you afraid of being here after last nights shooting? I said no. I've been coming here and the Old Comiskey Park my entire life and there has never been any trouble. Last night was a one time incident. She then said, have you ever been scared going to any  sporting event? I said yes. I don't  go Wrigley Field anymore because of all the car jackings and armed robberies in that area. She then asked me for my name and thanked me for the interview.

GM candidacy still alive.

As to Greg's point about sporting events and stadiums...you're forgetting the LV concert shooting and how more lives were lost there than all the sporting events combined since then....unless you start counting soccer stampedes.

Look at the huge spike in demand for concert tickets across the US as world in general.

perhaps they were stuck in her fat fold.
