He wasn’t flexin last year.  Maybe he will this year.

He flexed in 2021, was decent in 2022.

I understand people are coming to grips with a $130M - $140M payroll, expecting a lot higher number after the past two years, but this is how it’s going to look until the Sox start acquiring and developing quality players internally.

Chris Getz, Sox offices are closed!  Didn’t you get the memo?  Please stop working and report back to your family!  That’s enough awful acquisitions for one week!

Should they even receive minor league deals?

Good point.

They’re going to be under 100 come 2025

The best part is that this isn’t just a flier signing.  Bob said he was signed to fill out the rotation.

Getz for the win.

To quote Ron....

"Getz be praised!"

I thought Tim Hill was going to be nadir of how bad the dumpster diving would feel this off-season, but Getz dug deep and found another gear.

Maybe his 4th team in a calendar year will do the trick...

That’s possible if they start horrendously like last year, as this will absolutely crater attendance. They need a decent start, be within 5 games of .500 to end May, to draw some fans to enjoy a nice Summer day.

2026 is the earliest I see them having a possible decent young core if a lot goes right. Where the rubber hits the road is how players develop over the next two seasons, and their philosophy of acquiring players and roster construction for a contention window.

If it’s the same old same old like the past few decades, then yeah, sign out of Soxtalk until Jerry is gone because it’s never going to happen.

I feel like I'm living in Whoville with these acquisitions....who? Who? WHO?

What other negative WAR plays are free agents?

Majority are former members of the 2023 roster.

Churning churning churning.

2024 MLB Free Agents - 2023 White Sox bWAR

  • -2.0 Tim Anderson
  • -1.1 Lance Lynn
  • -0.7 Yasmani Grandal
  • -0.6 Jake Diekman

That said, teams have a broader perspective beyond a year. The White Sox received some value (Soroka my favorite of the haul) for -1.0 Bummer, and Atlanta is widely considered to have a smart FO.

Pretty obvious Getz isn’t using any special analysis on these acquisitions.  It’s basically who is cheap cuz they are either old and/or sucked last year.

Flexen is known as the Hulk. Don’t get him angry. You wouldn’t like him when he is angry.

Maybe he can pitch better with the Hulk glove on?

Chis Flexen

2021 Age 26 ,179.2 IP , 3.61 ERA , 3.89 FIP, 1.25 WHIP, 6.3 K/9

2022 Age 27, 137.2 IP,  3.73 ERA, 4.49 FIP, 1.329 WHIP, 6.2 K/9

2023 Age 28, 102.1 IP, 6.86 ERA, 6.22 FIP, 1.671 WHIP, 6.5 K/9

Lucas Giolito

2021, Age 26, 178.2 IP, 3.53 ERA, 3.79 FIP, 1.103 WHIP, 10.1 K/9, 11th in CY

2022 Age 27, 161.2 IP, 4.90 ERA, 4.06 FIP , 1.435 WHIP, 9.9 K/9

2023 Age 28, 184.1 IP, 4.88 ERA, 5.27 FIP,  1.313 WHIP, 10 K/9

The last 3 years of Flexen and Giolito are not that dissimilar. Obviously Lucas has a longer track record, much better K /9 and more innings.

If Flexen  had a combined statistical season in 2023 lets say halfway between his '21 and '22 stats he'd be looking at being a decent part of the Mariners rotation in his 1st year of Arbitration in 2024.

1 bad year for a 4th or 5th starer type after 2 years of solid production apparently made him worth a minor league contract in the eyes of many here.

Yet Lucas got 2 years and $38M. Is the difference between them over the last 3 years that big of a difference to warrant the vast differences in how some of our fans view Flexen and at least 1 GM viewed Giolito ?

I'm real good with this type of flyer. 29 year old starting pitcher with stats in 2 of his last 3 years that would be very acceptable on the 2024 Sox.

Feels like this could have / should have been an milb deal. Not a huge sum of $ by any means, but hard to see the vision.

I’m guessing that guaranteed dollars are the only thing selling these shitty players on coming here.

You can say that about half the signings. Low risk/low reward

This is crazy. I feel like I'm a Pittsburgh Pirates fan now.

I saw Gio's $38 mil guaranteed, and I tip my hat, say thanks for the memories.

I'm with you, fliers like this are fine. He probably has more prospect than our 40th dude. If Banny fixes him, he brings in a young, fresh arm in July.

We'd be in alot better shape with Cherington than this s%*# show.

Good thing Jerry hired Getz or else we would have had to wait a year before we got to enjoy these awesome signings.
