ChiliIrishHammock24
1 hour ago, CaliSoxFanViaSWside said: Dude the only reason you pick up Robert's $20M option is if you can trade him and get better value for him than you can get now. That's a huge gamble. Outside of his current hot streak apparently you have GMs hoarding position prospects again, and not making quality offers for Robert despite the hot streak, and his base running and defensive prowess and Getz being willing to eat money which could make his remaing salary this year somewhere under $5M. Not only that but if he does great for the team trading for him they are the only team who can pick up his $20M option What does that tell you ? Does it sound like other GMs think he's worth $20M a year next year or worth a decent prospect for a guy who theoretically can have a major impact on World Championship aspirations ? Read the room of how GMs of contending teams seem to be reacting to Robert. We are once again overvalueing him the same as we did when he was being deemed by many here as untradeable after the 2023 because the Sox could never get fair value for him. That's turned out so well hasn't it ? Does the phrase throwing good money after bad mean anything to you ? I really think there's a lot of posturing going on between all parties right now. Getz isn't in the driver's seat but there should be a decent trade to be made out there for Robert. It's not a "huge gamble" when there is no risk. He's not blocking playing time from a young player, his $20M wouldn't prohibit any competent owner from spending money elsewhere, and his value is so low that the return is going to be a longshot anyway. If they can get a decent return, do it. But giving him away because you don't want to spend $20M on what should be $150M+ in payroll flexibility is dumb. I understand Jerry won't do it, but I'm talking about what they SHOULD do, not what they WILL do. Jerry is too cheap and short-sighted to pick up the option, so Getz will get his scraps.

I dont know if NYM needs a bottom of rotation starter but maybe throw in Houser, eat half of Robert's money and try to get BOTH Gilbert and Clifford. Gilbert has really come on at the plate recently in AAA so call him up and evaluate his work in CF for the rest of the year. Clifford is tearing the cover off the ball in AA....bring him in, promote him to AAA and he will probably go wild in that park in Charlotte. Try to see if he can keep improving his hit tool to go with his mega savage power and let him compete in ST for the LF position. Worst case he is a big lefty masher at 1B or DH and can be a long term 4 hole player against RHP. I could see a future with high OBP Chase leading off (needs to get back to North of .350 OBP), Montgomery 2, one of Vargas/Teel/Quero 3 depending on matchup, Clifford 4, Braden 5. Hell, eat most of it (minus the league minimum) and toss in cash for the buyout and get the best offer.
almagest
Trading any player on the MLB roster for scraps, or for guy who isn't likely to make it to MLB just isn't worth it unless you're doing the player a favor or setting up a relationship for future trades. If the offers for Robert are not providing any real potential assets they might as well keep him and exercise the option, or just let him go in the offseason. If the rumors are true and they can get something like a top 10 guy + a low level guy with promise, then they should take that. If not, don't just trade him for something that isn't likely to provide any future value. Edited July 29 by almagest
Chicago White Sox
Mets fans may be worse than Orioles fans if that is somehow possible. Somehow many of them think they can use Vientos as a key piece in a trade for a TOR starter or other major piece. Whether you believe in the player in the long run or not, his value is very much suppressed at the moment.

From what I'm hearing on WFAN this afternoon the Mets are going to try and pawn him off as he's a man without a defensive position.

almagest
Maybe the leak on Vientos was less "the Sox want him" and more "the Mets are putting this out there to let teams know Vientos is up for grabs" 4

So, the leaks to the NYPost about the Sox demanding Vientos in any package for Robert probably came from the Mets to drum up the price for Vientos, regardless of the Sox' interest. The scrap return will probably come just before 5:00 PM Chicago time on Thursday. Getz will sell whomever he gets back as a key part of the future. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear him say lie that Jerry was actually willing to pick up Robert’s 2026 option but the return was too good to pass up because it is composed of player(s) that they had specifically targeted. It will be a massive spin zone. Edited July 29 by WhiteSox2023

I like the way you think. Mets haven't won a World Series since 1986. Getz should be giving Stearns a pep talk telling him what s hero he'd bewith Robert and Houser leading the Mets to a Championship in NY for a few measly prospects. Baseball and baseball media would make a huge deal out of the Mets finally winning it all again.
Bob Sacamano
What would make this week fun is if there was like a GM meetings in the summertime, the 3-4 days leading up to the deadline. BamaDoc
If Robert finishes the year healthy, opsing .800+ the last couple months, if you pick up ten million of his 20 option, could you get a haul? Think that is the question vs take best offer. Figure first scenario less than 20%
