A team like the Cubs really don't have the resources, rotation spots, or ability to punt a game or two right now to grab up a guy opting out of a minor league deal on the off chance that he just put it together in his last two PCL starts. And of the 7 teams, or so, positioned to take that gamble, not all 7 are geared up to support a starting pitcher the way the Sox are right now. Sure, anyone could grab up the next Adrian Houser, but we're kind of uniquely positioned with our ability to lose, and our dearth of depth at AAA right now.

His money is paying debt and going towards a potential new stadium in the near future. Until actually young talent arrives there is no foundation to add to.

Maybe Getz can sell them on Houser/Civale? “Cubs placed RHP Jameson Taillon on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to July 1, with a strained right calf. Taillon is expected to miss at least a month with the injury, making him very droppable in mixed leagues. The veteran right-hander is 7-6 with a 4.44 ERA in 17 starts this season. The Cubs said they’ll use a bullpen game to replace him Saturday, but they did recall Jordan Wicks, who could ultimately take the open rotation spot.”
