I feel like most of the line up issues aren't in his hands I know you've been saying this for a while and I don't dismiss it but part of me has to think what does it say about the 'manager' that he'd allow someone in the front office to tell him who to play, what the batting order should be et al. If someone needs the job that bad that the are willing to put up with that, that tells me more about their character and I wouldn't want them managing my team. Pretty sure that’s how most modern MLB franchises are run these days, to be fair. Front office builds the team with a certain player utilization plan in mind, and the manager follows that.

I find it hard to think though that a manager like Bob Melvin, Bruce Bochy, Dave Roberts or Terry Francona would agree to that undermining of their authority.

This is how things are done today.

I believe that the GM and the Manager need to be on the same page on certain issues but ultimately any in game decisions should be made by the manager and I think it was Venable’s decision and his only to remove Baldwin from Saturday nights game in the 5th inning after a hit and 2 nice plays in right field including a perfect throw to double off a runner at first base, at least he let him play the whole game Sunday with Baldwin responding with 3 line drive hits. It's about building confidence in young players. They should put Brooks in LF and leave him there the rest of the year and Beni can DH. Middle Buffalo
I’m just glad to see some progress this season. The record stinks, but at least they have players who aren’t just going through the motions. They have some situational awareness issues, though. Eg. I’d like Montgomery to try to make contact rather than try for a 500 foot homer on every swing. Venable is doing a decent job. He’s learning the difference in being the guy making suggestions and the guy making decisions. He needs some time, but overall I think he’s ok.

Why would you put Dave Roberts in that category of elite Managers?

I think guys like Francona, Melvin and a few others make most of their lineup/game time decisions with some suggestions by the GM. Other GM's have more input and the manager goes with what the GM says.
