His team and teammates essentially said it was okay because he was considerate enough to check with them since he would be missing a game.  However, I suspect if someone told you not to attend a funeral for a friend that you were invited to by the deceased's wife because you didn’t know each other long enough, you would rightly tell that person to F off.  🤣

Which is a long way of saying only your judgement is valid

I’m not trying to spin anything.  The article I provided said that he had the support of the team as well as teammates.  Meanwhile, you stated that some teammates had a problem with it yet have not posted one article supporting your statement.  So who is spinning the story now?  Quite honestly, you can’t assure anything since you have provided zero evidence supporting your claim.

Were his teammates supposed to tell him not to go? Lol

What a weird position to put your teammates in..most guys dont need to double check with their teammates when they attend a funeral because people naturally understand. The fact he even had to ask shows what a pantload he is.

Welp, it's over.  None of us should ever have morals or standards again. This is absolutely a copout.

I never said anything about not upholding ones standards. I just noted, accurately, we all root for people we disagree with politically because frankly, we don't know where everyone stands. I find it absurd to root against someone because you disagree with their politics but to each their own.

I find that not true and self serving.

Buddy…just come out and say what this is all about.  You’re entitled to whatever political views you desire, but trying to use a fluff piece from MLB.com that only cites the player is question and pretending that is somehow proof that everyone in that clubhouse was supportive is hilarious to me.  These are professional athletes, some of these guys miss the birth of their own children if the games matter.  There were certainly people in that clubhouse who were upset by Shaw’s decision.  If you can’t admit that, then you are clearly biased in this matter.

Let me guess, Shaw asked Busch, Justin Steele and a few other “neutral observers”

Who gives a s%*# what Cubs player did during the season. Nobody here should give a s%*# if he went to a funeral or not, he is human and allowed to make his own decisions. Just because they don't align with you doesn't make him a shitty person or teammate. Nobody knows Matt Shaw the person to pass judgement on his intentions or beliefs. Keep standing on your "morale" high ground

Yeah, only person who's allowed to judge people based on individual anecdotes, events or actions is CK!

Let’s be honest here, he wasn’t allowed to make this decision on his own without risk of a consequence.  He had to get approval from the Cubs front office to attend this “funeral”.  If the rules don’t consider this an automatic reason to miss a game, I think it warrants open discussion.  This isn’t tee-ball, this is professional sports and guys have sacrificed much more to play in games with stakes.

And yes it matters because a poster is saying we should go out and acquire the dude.  Unfortunately character does matter and this player has some baggage behind just skipping important baseball games to attend the “funeral” of an extremely polarizing right wing media personality he BFFed up within the last year.  I guess that his decisions to resist Cubs coaching should also be ignored due to your full support of all people’s individual rights.

To get this thread back on track, there has been some buzz that the Phillies are trying for Kyle Tucker.  If they add Tucker, does that take them out of the Realmuto market and force them to look at cheaper options for catcher?  I know it won’t be popular here, but I still like the idea of a Quero for Crawford trade and Justin will be hard pressed to get any meaningful playing time if Tucker is added.

The GM did make it sound like the CF job was his to lose but you’re right that signing Tucker can push him out. Especially if they need to add a catcher.

In that scenario, I assume Marsh moves to CF full-time so they don’t necessarily “need” Crawford?  I think that trade makes sense for the Sox and I’d be aboard.  Not sure I see the Phillies seriously going after Tucker considering they appear to have the outfield and DH covered already…

Castellanos

Marsh

Garcia

Schwarber

I believe that’s already a combined $53.2 million dollars in payroll for 2026 for that outfield and DH.  I know they want to dump Castellanos but at $20 million remaining for him for 2026, they are probably in a worse position trying to move him than the Sox with Robert.
