Austin Hays

Soxtalk willed this one into reality. Good work.

I admittedly did not watch Sox baseball much last year, so I’m probably missing something. Can someone explain why we think Brooks Baldwin makes sense as a corner OF? I know it’s time to look for upside anywhere, but if Baldwin isn’t at 2B, it just doesn’t seem like there’s enough bat there even in a good year.

I ask this because it seems like Hays should just take Baldwin out of the OF mix entirely, except as a utility.

The Sox will need to bump someone from the 40 man roster.  I think Hudson is most likely with Iriarte & Hill outside possibilities.

I just heard Getz talking up the CF guys. I don't know if the order he mentioned them means anything. However it was Acuna 1st, Hill, Peirara and then Baldwin.  He also talked about being active in the FA OF market and trade talks. That was on CHSN with David Haugh ,Garfien and other guy.

Edit again

It wasnt in that podcast it was on Sox Machine yesterday at right around the 7:45 minute mark. I did get the order right that he mentioned them.

Ill listen to it again maybe edit this post and put the youtube video in here.

Baldwin was elite in AAA last year and put up a 116 wRC+ when he returned post demotion over ~200 PA’s.  The bat against RHP looks very kick much legit IMO.  His outfield did suck last year in the corners, but there is reason to believe he can get better out there with more reps.  He should be out there everyday against RHP at minimum and hopefully in the outfield predominantly.

I'd love to use Baldwin as a super utility and get him 400+ at bats and see what he does. Let him play 5 days a week all over.

I don't yet understand how Acuna is prioritized by Getz as a starting CFer.  I keep thinking he lacks the power to be an OFer but little tuna is apparently being slotted in as the starting CFer.

It will be interesting to see how opinions (including my own) change as we see these players in ST.

I doubt Getz shares all his thoughts with the public.

I feel Getz does give pretty honest assessments and plans when he talks to the media. He doesn’t do the bullshit talk in circles and say nothing like Hahn did.

I like Getz a lot.  My remark was meant to say that Getz knows nothing positive comes with sharing with the press or fans.  Example: We would love to find a way to acquire Hays isn't going to work to our advantage.  However, we are having talks with both FA's and possible trade partners for outfield help, which keeps fans happy.  In general, the GMs all play the same game.

The "don't sign big league outfielders" crowd is in shambles!

I would have preferred Bader to Hays, but Hays cheaper. Either way, nice to have at least one veteran out there. Hays defense has been trending down, but his arm is still great and he's a viable starter.

Yeah, I think he settles things down a bit in the outfield. Provides a bit of a comfort level out there. Left field or right?

Acuna can do that too or Meidroth on the Infield eventually . If we want to provide a runway for power and speed potential the OF is the place to do it . The INF is stacked and we haven't even seen Carlson or if Cholowski ends up being #1.

Baldwin could end up in LF and be a decent OF with reps and Braden in RF eventually.

Beginning of August with Vargas injured Brooks played a lot of 3B. With Robert injured in Sept. he played a lot of CF some RF & LF and he had an .828 OPS and .784 in July.

Welcome.

I've always liked him.  Grindy!!!

"Austin Hays Signs with Sox"  title perhaps?  I know its pinned but it looks like just another speculation thread by the title.

Thank you. I realize a shortened title gives an advantage for getting it out there 1st 🙂

Was there really a "crowd" ? Tauchman, Taylor, Slater last year plus Getz said he was looking for it.
