They have question marks all over the place from an offensive standpoint, and it appears limited money to spend in free agency. They don't seem interested in moving any starting pitching and don't have much minor league talent to trade. However, from both a 'found' money standpoint and moving young talent, they can probably surprise us and make a significant trade or make move on a free agent if they really wanted a specific talent, even if it impacts their minor league system, etc.

 

It will be interesting to see what they are able to do with the limitations that appear to be in place.

I would not be disappointed if nothing came of this.

I'm interested in seeing the return though.

 

Seriously, last year, everyone was just saying "pitching isn't that valuable, you can find pitching anywhere now"...well the results are in and that's not true. Certainly think he'll get a top 100 prospect and maybe 2, but not a haul.

Doesn't hit much, but fangraphs has him as a good defender at SS.

 

3 years ago, he really hit well. Last year, he was hit by tragedy as he lost his infant son I believe. That probably took a tole on him.

Plus it isn't really an obvious upgrade over Saladino, some people just like other teams' garbage for some reason.

If they're all in competing this year and the cost to acquire wasn't so great...he would provide more upside than Saladino.

 

He also fits the current two year window or cycle idea...with Melky, Lawrie and Frazier.

 

 

The last 2 1/2 years, the guy barely has a .600 OPs. He is one of the worst hitters in baseball. No need for him unless you want him to be a back up/ PR.

 

Just look at the second half of his breakout year 2013. A .583 OPS. 13 walks last year. If Alexei Ramirez's ABs pissed you off, this guy may send you to a hospital

Obviously you believe Saladino can put up a 4ish war at age 22/23.

 

Segura is only 25, and plays at the very least above-average defense. I guess it depends on how much you want to believe the last two seasons (where 2015 he was clearly affected by the death of his son) are more indicative of his overall ability.

 

If you throw out that season, you'd expect around a 2 war. Of course, he has been double that and half that but terribly inconsistent so hard to predict. Perfect change of scenery candidate. Juan Uribe was "garbage" to the Rockies before they dumped him for Aaron Miles, let's not forget. Both Segura and Uribe were Rookie of the Year type players whose careers nosedived for different reasons.

 

He has also averaged about 30 stolen bases per season.

 

Is that 2 WAR a reasonable expectation for Saladino...or is closer to 0.5-1 more likely?

 

At the very least, he would be perfect insurance for both middle infield positions and allow Carlos Sanchez at his young age to continue to develop his hitting ability and power at Charlotte. Guess it depends on his salary, though...and trade cost.

 

Otherwise we're left with Ian Desmond as the fallback to an outfielder, and losing a draft pick to boot.

What a guy did 2 years ago is irrelevant. It is what he will do in 2016. He has been one of the worst hitters in the NL the Second half of 2013, and all of 2014, and 2015. If a White Sox did that and they said they were sticking with him, you would loyalty is hurting the team.. I don't think switching leagues is going to help him. Saladino has potential and a good glove. At worst, he can do what Segura has done the last 400 games on Milwaukees schedule.According to Bill James he also is the 4th fastest runner into 2nd base on SB attempts only slower than Noel, Hamilton, and Dyson. No reason to give up anything for another guy that can't hit.
