White Sox have shown interest in Machado

Why do people think that Machado would sign an extension here? He knows literally nothing of this organization beyond perhaps some of its players. It seems extremely unlikely that he would forsake his golden free agency to sign an extension with an organization to which he is brand new. This would be a one-rental player, albeit with a chance to make an impact on him going into his free agency, in a year in which the Sox will still not be contenders.

This will probably sounds nuts to people but I'm not including Kopech in a deal for Machado even if he signed an extension. All the sudden you're losing a lot of your payroll flexibility and you're losing your potential ace. We have some pitching depth in this organization but we don't have Kopech depth. You weaken your future rotation a great deal and you lose a lot of this payroll flexibility you've gained. I'm really not a fan of doing that even for a guy like Manny.

Also why Yelich is a better player to target. You might give up more in a package but his contract gives you so much more flexibility going forward

If Machado were acquired and then extended, rather than signed as a free agent, after having been offered a "qualifying offer," by his 2018 team, doesn't that eliminate the loss of a Draft pick, for the team which signs him? If so, isn't that a consideration?

I think that's a very small consideration since you only lose a second round draft pick instead of a first like before

Outside of 1 or 2 posters, no one thinks he will sign

I don't think there's a chance he signs an extension no matter where he ends up. This is just all hypothetical discussion.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- White Sox general manager Rick Hahn would not comment on his team's trade pursuit of Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado during Thursday morning's media session on the final day of baseball's 2017 Winter Meetings.

Hahn wouldn't comment on whether Chicago had made the best offer for Machado, as some reports have indicated. He actually wouldn't even acknowledge if talks had taken place between the two teams.

But he certainly was willing to stress six or seven times during a 12-minute interview how the team has not wavered from a rebuild goal of putting itself in the best position for the long term with each move they make.

"Nothing has changed in terms of what we are trying to accomplish," Hahn said. "We're very interested in adding premium young talent to what we've already built, but at the same time we're not going to rob Peter to pay Paul, if that makes sense.

"We are headed towards a bright future. We want to make moves that are going to enhance that, not necessarily take away from it."

So what does this comment or Hahn's overall interview theme mean in terms of a potential Machado acquisition?

Don't look for any of the top prospects amassed by the White Sox over the past year, such as right-handed pitchers Michael Kopech or Lucas Giolito, to be included in a deal for a player with one year remaining of contractual control. The White Sox did not work diligently over the past year and beyond to assemble a critical mass of young talent only to cut into it for the potential chance of having a leg up on signing Machado before or even shortly after he reaches free agency.

At 25 years old and considered a generational sort of elite talent, Machado certainly fits the White Sox overall rebuild gameplan. But at what cost are they willing to add him in the present.

"Now we may take some calculated risks along the way," Hahn said. "We repeatedly said we are going to be opportunistic in this market and explore opportunities to make us better.

"However the goal again remains putting us in the best position for the long term. Nothing in the last few days or the last year-plus has been done with the intention of deviating from that long-term vision."

As far as Winter Meetings rumors go, Hahn pointed out most of their trade news in the past year came from the team and didn't play out following advanced leaks. The White Sox find themselves in a development phase of the rebuild, requiring patience as they try to figure out how these players fit and where needs will arise.

The White Sox possess the Minor League depth and payroll flexibility to acquire Machado and retain him long term, but they won't jeopardize a significant part of their future plans to make it happen.

"When it comes time to add to what we've accumulated or continue this process, it's going to be with the vision of putting ourselves in the position to contend for multiple championships," Hahn said. "In the end that's what's going to be more important: The ability to win championships than send messages."

I think the White Sox are just playing Pricing Cop to make sure nobody gets him cheap. They're probably legitimately surprised that they're considered a high bidder.

Well if they are just doing "due dilligence" and found their offer was pretty good maybe they should act on it.

Perhaps...but it really makes you wonder what the Sox offer could be. Maybe something like Cease or Fulmer, Adams and Stephens. Gives BAL a few arms that are MLB ready or not terribly far away from the majors without really hurting the Sox all the much. A deal like that I could get behind, and I could see it being something the Sox offered just to see where they stood. With what the Fish received for Stanton/Ozuna/Gordon, they didn't exactly set up a seller's market, so maybe an offer like that actually does get the Sox to the table for 1 year of MM.

I can't decide if the White Sox genuinely want to acquire Machado, or if this is all to drive the price up? I'm leaning towards they do badly want him and are trying a creative method of courtship beyond just the money involved. A full season to show and convince him that this is the organization he wants to spend his career in could be compelling? Especially when some of our young talent like Kopech/Jimenez/Hansen/etc. start to emerge. We have plenty of firepower in the pipeline to try and sell him on a future contender. Hahn basically said that the team expects to spend like a drunken sailor next offseason to build a winner.

With only one season of control remaining I can't see teams being willing to move their top guys for Machado.

Jimenez/Kopech/Robert are 100% off limits

Giolito or Lopez could be in play, although I'd prefer to keep both

Fulmer, Cease, Adams, Stephens, Dunning could be on the table

Teams move top 100 prospects for 2 month rentals. I'm sure any deal for Machado will also include at least one top 100. It's crazy to say he's not worth that when top 100 guys literally get traded for 2 months of a guy. Now is that worth it to us? Probably not but that's because of where we currently are.

Maybe when the move puts you over the edge to win the WS. See: Cubs/Chapman.

Yea... losing ANY assets makes ZERO sense unless he's resigned.

I agree and sort of acknowledged that. But seeing comments the last few days of: "any team that gives up anything of value is crazy" is over the top. If we were a big bat away from being competitive, of course I'd trade a top 100 guys in a package to get one.

Edit: Darvish was also another one who netted a top 100 guy at the deadline just last year.

Cards trading Weaver and O'Neill for him makes sense
