It seems like another step in the right direction for the Nationals, and a great flip for them for an ex-prospect in Mead they picked up in what seemed like a minor trade in March. In that deal, they sent Boston Smith, drafted in the sixth round in 2025 by then-scouting director Danny Haas and scouting coordinator Jordan Missal, to the White Sox for Mead, and both players in that deal have had breakout years. I think they run out the clock with Hays's rehab assignment, they look for a trade partner, and if they hit that date with no roster spot for Hays then they will just cut him.

I believe they are both out of options. So, one comes up and the other? Stays on rehab assignment for as long as is allowed? Back to the IL on a new fake injury? Dfa? Traded is my guess. I think Pereira joins the active roster and Hays is traded before the deadline.
