One problem for Wolkow is an emerging industry view that the skills he is weakest at — contact and swing decisions — are the ones that are hardest to teach. The flip side is that teams increasingly believe that they can squeeze more power out of most players, especially if they have a strong foundation of making good swing decisions. Then you look at Wolkow who has god-tier power but he can't get to it in games because he has to sacrifice everything in order to keep his K rate below 40%. He's a fun target for a team trying to get something for a player who isn't going to have much value. But I just don't see how he could be a major part of a deal for anything besides a depressed-value rental or low-end reliever type. Some important context for interpreting Winston-Salem statistics this year, by the way: there is an offensive explosion in that league this year. Has to be juiced baseballs or something. League average OPS has jumped from .663 to .767. The league hit 1049 homers last season; this season, there have 1426 already with over a month to go. Some of the crowds down through the years at Sox park have been embarrassingly small in April and May mainly because of some of the frigid days. If that's your impression of Boston Smith hitting 1.200 OPS, you should watch more baseball. Pipeline ranks Mathias LaCombe as a better prospect than Smith but he obviously isn't. Maybe we can trick the Mets into taking LaCombe and Lodise instead because the number next to their names is lower. Or pick up Marco Gonzales for nothing. That's what I would do. A rental with a 5 ERA is closer to a salary dump if you ask me.

Packaging him for who though? There's got to be a specific player in mind that is actually available. Do you swap Colson 1 for 1 for Hunter Goodman or Detmers? I wouldn't. And I'd like to see Goodman on the team. Do you trade him for a couple months of Skubal? According to some general principle, every player on the team should be 'available', but trading a stud player just for the sake of it strike me as shortsighted, especially if the rationale is "we just drafted a shortstop".

Sure, which puts him firmly into a deal like this. It's like when the Sox draft the guy throwing 100 in college, but can't find the strike zone to save his life. Sure IF he puts it together he could be something, and he will get looks because of his loud tool, but the runway for him is much longer than others to get there.

No doubt…but the same can be said for a toolsy LatAm teenager and those guys still have value. My point isn’t that Wolkow is super valuable, just that he doesn’t have zero value.
