QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Aug 13, 2006 -> 12:44 PM) You are right, let keep stealing when we have not shown we can steal on I Rod all series. The problem here is that we are not so much facing a good pitcher as running ourselves out of innings. Just like if we followed your philosphy Cintron wouldn't have pushed the envelope in the first inning and went for 3rd. Had that happened we wouldn't have scored a run that inning and who knows what could have happened. Dye got picked off, he almost never does, s*** happens. BA running in that situation is text book baseball. If it doesn't work, oh well, you got Pods leading off the inning and thats what you want. Of course they went down 1-2-3 the next inning but oh well.

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 13, 2006 -> 12:42 PM) I was going to ask you this: the organization doesn't seem pleased with Tim Raines. Might they feel like he's not doing a good job with the runners? I was actually thinking it hurts us that Raines wanted to be on the bench talking to the players more since I think he can give a lot more pointers when it comes to getting good jumps on steals, reading pickoff moves, etc than Baines can.

QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Aug 13, 2006 -> 12:40 PM) You can be aggressive. I prefer to win baseball games. And with your philopshy we'd be s*** up a creek anytime we ran into a good pitcher.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 13, 2006 -> 12:40 PM) Our whole team seems to really be having some terrible SB technique lately. Up and down the list, no one is getting good jumps. Brian Anderson is better than Jesus. Freddy Garcia got through 5, qualifies for the win, and can be removed if he gets in trouble. Oh btw, I think with Mack in CF that inning this game is now tied. I wonder if any of it has to do with the difference at 1st base (between Baines and Raines).

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 13, 2006 -> 12:38 PM) I absolutely understand why you try to steal in that situation. However, it's disappointing that Anderson wasn't able to get a better jump in that situation where the pitcher is focusing on the hitter with a 2 strike count. Ummm...the jump was good, I replayed it as well, the problem was it was essentially a pitch out with the ball missing in a spot where Pudge was in golden position to gun him down. The throw was a bit high but the pitch was an easy one for the catcher to handle (especially one with a gun like Pudge has).

QUOTE(Maverick0984 @ Aug 13, 2006 -> 12:37 PM) it's called being agressive, get over it cardinal rules of baseball are 1st out at 3rd and last out at 3rd, other than that, i know of no rule about trying to steal second, he was trying to get him into scoring position. what don't you understand? it was a good idea. At least some of us get the basic concepts of fundemental baseball and when you have your leadoff hitter down 0-2 in the count with 2 outs you send the guy on first if he has any speed to try and give you a shot of a 2 out hit with RISP or you get your leadoff guy a fresh count. Freddy didn't look pretty but two hit to the deepest part of the park where BA gets em and Pudge whiffing on a hanging curve. Now lets get a few more runs.
-
Jesus, did any of you play fundemental baseball, you run in that situation all day long (especially since BA has good speed).
-
QUOTE(Reddy @ Aug 13, 2006 -> 12:34 PM) whats the point of trying to steal there? Its real simple...your leadoff hitter is down 0-2 so you send your guy, if he gets into 2nd great, you got a shot, if he doens't, you start the next inning with your leadoff hitter having a fresh count. Any good manager would do that and its a real simple thing in baseball, kind of like running with a full count and 2 outs.
-
No problem with that cause it means we got the top of the order next inning.

QUOTE(shawnhillegas @ Aug 13, 2006 -> 12:32 PM) hawk hates brandon inge for some reason. Inge has saved Freddy twice today.

QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Aug 13, 2006 -> 12:26 PM) Rick Hahn (asst. GM) said on the Talking Baseball with Bruce Levine that they would like to add in addition to a third catcher and some more speed of the bench, one or two arms in the bullpen. So, that means Stewart, Owens, Tracey and Boooooonnnneeeee. The thing is I can't see them taking these guys from a Charlotte team that will be in the playoffs for the first time in a long while.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 13, 2006 -> 12:30 PM) You can't do it every game, but if you have to do it 1 time out of each time through the rotation, and you have a long man in your bullpen, it's tolerable. Last year if we did that, we'd have Viz throw 2 innings, then Cotts, Politte, and Jenks/Hermanson would all pitch, and maybe even Marte also, and our bullpen would be gassed. Mccarthy out there gives you the luxury of taking out a starter every so often if you really need a win, because you can go McCarthy for 3-4 and then Jenks if you have to. We don't use Brandon that way though. It be another if we have done it on a consistent basis. Also note that I don't think Brandon McCarthy is any better than Freddy. He's been way iffy and way inconsistent all season long. I think that has to do with the way Ozzie's managed him, but bottom line is he's not the savior a lot of you seem to think he is (not the way he's pitched this year). And this is coming from one of his biggest supporters.

That wasn't even close, BA SAFE

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 13, 2006 -> 12:29 PM) We have a bullpen that should have everyone available besides MacDougal. This is one of the biggest games for the Sox all season, as it would rejuvenate them in regards to the AL Central. Show me a manager using his relievers in the 4th inning on a consistent basis and I show you a team thats gonna suck ass and lose way more games than it wins. Its one thing if we are getting shelled or if we had an off-day or if Freddy doesn't have a history of actually sucking for 3 innings than putting it together for 2 innings. Infield hit for BA or an error

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 13, 2006 -> 12:26 PM) We caught a break in that the last ball did not leave the ballpark. Technically we didn't catch a break though, a break would be a bad call or an error or something of that nature, that was just a hard hit shot and I would have been shocked if it left the building. Had it stayed ruled a HR than it would have been a break for the Tigers.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 13, 2006 -> 12:25 PM) We didn't use McCarthy yesterday, so I think the best we can hope for is to get 1 more inning from Freddy and somehow still have the lead, then have McCarthy take care of the 6th and 7th, and maybe part of the 8th. That I wouldn't have as much of a problem with, but you can't go in the 4th inning, thats way too early.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 13, 2006 -> 12:25 PM) I think winning today is more important than having a fresh bullpen for tomorrow. We could use McCarthy and Cotts in long relief today. No, winning today will be harder if we turned things to the pen NOW. We don't have a guy that can just go out and throw 3 or 4 innings since Ozzie doesn't seem to use Bmac in that way and well thats life, we can't just magically change things. It would be absolutely assinine to go to the pen right now, after using it yesterday. We can't just destroy our pen consistently using 4 or 5 guys a game. IN the post-season you can chance that cause of the off-days, you can't do it when you have the stretch of consecutive games that this team has right now.
-
QUOTE(Reddy @ Aug 13, 2006 -> 12:24 PM) we've got KC next, sure we can. KC has one of the best offenses in baseball over the past 6 weeks (if not the best).
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 13, 2006 -> 12:23 PM) Ozzie...please get someone up in the pen. Your family member is the worst pitcher on the entire roster. No, do not use the pen now. That would be dumb, we can't win games throwing our pen in the 4th inning. We just used the pen yesterday so you can't just sit out and throw a 4 inning game with the pen in the regular season on any consistent basis if you watn to play winning baseball. Freddy is gonna suck but we need him to throw a few more innings.
-
We just have to hope the other 4 guys stand up and carry this team cause Freddy is long gone at the end of the season. Hawk and DJ are trashing him every start, you have the Sox trying to move him last year, its just a matter of time.
-
What the heck are tehy calling? Oh its a double. A little better I guess, still two straight rockets.
-
Freddy is bad. We just have to hope our other starters can develop into a 1-4 combo with Freddy being the 5 that we just hope keeps us in a game. He's so terrible without his velocity. Luckily they only have 2 runs to show thus far, but thats not really that impressive considering thats in 3 innings of work and he just gave up a leadoff double.

QUOTE(RME JICO @ Aug 11, 2006 -> 11:02 AM) Liriano Pitch Count for first 10 starts: 68 - MIL 83 - SEA 105 - LAA 91 - SEA 98 - BAL 101 - PIT 97 - HOU 86 - LAD 103 - MIL 95 - TEX So you are talking about stretching him out with 105 pitches in his third start? I would've assumed that he would've stayed around 80 pitches for the first couple, then 90 for a few more. 105 pitches in his 3rd start out of the pen seems pretty quick. If there was a pitch limit it must have been around 105 then. He had a no no going in that game against the Angels, I think thats why they went a little longer with him (I was at the game and he was pitching lights out).

I know one thing...I'd rather be going head to head for the division than the wild card, cause we may have that as a fall back plan. Not to mention we have a bit more control over the division (since we still have a few more games vs the Tigers) than we would in the wild card race.
