2010 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jan 14, 2010 -> 10:42 PM) Josh Johnson re-ups with the fish for 4 years 39m... buys out his last two years of arb and secures him for his first two eligible years of FA Good deal for both sides. The Marlins now have a 25-year old legitimate ace locked up for the next 4 years at an extremely reasonable rate. And JJ gets long-term security and gets to stay with a team he obviously didn't want to leave. I still can't believe JJ was a 4th round pick. It's scary to think what the Marlins could do with better fan support/payroll flexibility, considering how well they draft and develop.

Best starters in A.L.?
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 14, 2010 -> 10:06 PM) Could be... Yeah. But I would put the Yankees and Red Sox over us right now. That doesn't matter to me. I'd put our rotation easily over anybody in our division. That's all that matters until October.

QUOTE (SockMe @ Jan 14, 2010 -> 10:00 PM) uggh I dont like the sound of Valverde to the Tigers. Dude has a serious good arm. Very shaky pitcher though. He's been one of the best closers in the NL the last three years. I just don't get how a team supposedly looking to shed payroll (the Granderson trade) would make this move.

2010 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 14, 2010 -> 03:57 PM) Rotoword says Jose Valverde signs with Tigers. Huh? I thought they were trying to cut salary? 2 years and 14 million for a closer? Granted I think Valverde is pretty good. Just doesn't make any sense. Not to mention they lose two draft picks.

Castro is back.
QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jan 14, 2010 -> 05:09 AM) You have high expectations for the offensive capabilities of a team's backup C I get the sense you'd find me to be bad in bed That's a fake jphat. That's gotta be his evil twin xphat. Oh, and is there anything I can do to get you to remove that horrific avatar? I mean I'll send you some money if you want. I feel like skinning a squirrel every time I see it.

McGwire Admits Steroid Use
QUOTE (longshot7 @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 01:19 PM) I think the Roiders all deserve an award for trying so hard to help their teams win, but that's just me...... LOL. An award? I wouldn't go quite THAT far. But I can definitely sympathize. I workout quite often. And I'm always looking for some kinda edge (I'm a regular at GNC). If I played a pro sport, and I thought there was something out there that could enhance me overall, you best believe I'd consider it. Would I do it? Probably not. But that's only because of the risks and long-term ramifications. If not for that, I'd do it in a second.

McGwire Admits Steroid Use
I still can't bring myself to crucify somebody who's crime is that they tried to make themselves better at baseball. He finally manned up. No big deal to me either way.

Will KW make a move prior to Soxfest?
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 11, 2010 -> 05:38 PM) Yeah, all of those one year deals this off season are really going to kill this franchise... What happened to jphat? He's turned into a combination of fathom/tito. He was so optimistic before that Hawk had to tell him to dial it down.

Pods to the Royals
QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 8, 2010 -> 07:54 PM) Thomas and Crede I do remember Thomas killing us in 2006. Crede killed us? I guess my memory is shot right now.

Pods to the Royals
QUOTE (SockMe @ Jan 8, 2010 -> 07:48 PM) I hate that he went to the Royals. I have a bad feeling he will kill us everytime we play them. How come I see this every single time an ex-sox player goes to another team? What former player has killed us? I'm serious. I just want to know.

Nothing Much Going On So Here's A Thought...
QUOTE (1977 sox fan @ Jan 8, 2010 -> 06:43 PM) No but how can people say its a great rotation Floyd has been inconsistant as to has Danks. and buehrle in recent years has been avg the second have last year was below avg . Peavy was hurt last year so his numbers are not enough to really judge . i guess what i am saying is will see . but i can't label 3 13 game winners and a hurt guy from last year an say its a great rotation. i know i will get slammed i will get what buehrle did in 2005 and no hitter perfect game . i say the rotation is good not great until they do something even cooper said that and he is there pitching coach . and i still would package danks to get AGON . We led the league in quality starts last year but we won 79 games . do you remember all thoses 2-1 3-2 games we lost or the 0-2 1-3 games we lost but were quality starts . we need another area of our team to depend on other then these 4 to 5 guys . I agree with you to a degree. Saying the starting pitching will be "great" in 2010 is a stretch. I thought the 2006 staff would be better than the 2005 staff. We know how that worked out. However, the starting staff is the unquestioned strength of the team. That's not up for debate. If Peavy/Buehrle do what they normally do, combined with Floyd/Danks building off of the last two years (and a solid #5 in FG, assuming he's healthy), this is undoubtedly the best starting rotation in the division. Yes, I'd love to have AGON. But to trade John Danks, as you proposed, is to open up a HUGE gaping hole in the rotation. FG's health will be a constant worry all year. And we don't know what we really have in Hudson. So you're playing with some serious fire to trade a sure thing in Danks.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 8, 2010 -> 06:05 PM) This has been said more than once already, but to make it clear: It is almost absolutely certain that his demands were much higher until most or all of the suitors went in an alternative direction. THIS IS NOT WHAT THE PRICETAG WAS WHEN KENNY WAS NEGOTIATING WITH HIM Ok, sorry. And you'd have to be short bus retarded not to know this. People just like to b****.

Who is your favorite MLB team outside the Sox?
QUOTE (Pants Rowland @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 05:13 PM) I used to always like the Orioles just because of the respect gained in 1983. They have sucked bad for some time now, though. Same with the Pirates. Another organization that was solid when I first really started following baseball but have gone by the wayside now. In the here and now, I like the Cardinals, Phillies, Dodgers, Rockies, Marlins, and, again for old school reasons, the Royals. I also do not mind the Tigers despite the common Detroit hate around Chicago. Good history of success despite the odds stacked against them being up against the Yankees all those years. I hated them when I was a kid and Sparky managed them, though. They're not going to suck for much longer. That's a J4L guarantee.

Who is your favorite MLB team outside the Sox?
Used to be the Astros for me. Particularly from 1997-2004. Most of those teams were STACKED and so fun to watch. Right now I'd have to say the D-backs and Marlins.

Viciedo at 1b?
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 10:15 PM) I know it's not as exciting as 3b, but come on, judging from the guy's size, did we really think he was going to play third? They scouted him and paid him for his potential with the stick. I don't think his defense was ever a huge priority with him. Personally, I'm just happy to know we may have someone who can step in for Paulie after Kenny has dealt CC and Brandon Allen. He better end up having one hell of a bat. Otherwise this was a wasted investment.

Viciedo at 1b?
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 10:03 PM) that title made me laugh. I'd love to make the propogandist titles for Chicagowhitesox and Chicagobears.com. Anyway, that kind of sucks. There goes his plus value Scott Merkin gets on my god damn nerves. He seriously needs to take the White Sox dildo out his ass. And whoever it was that scouted Viciedo needs to be fired or something. A 1B? Whoopie!

Seattle is going to catch the ball
QUOTE (striker @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 12:44 PM) They already had great defense and great pitching last year but their offense sucked. And they really didn't do much to improve that. Figgins is a bit of an upgrade over Beltre. Kotchman is a downgrade over Branyan. Griffey is only going to get worse IMO. Who knows which Bradley will show up and for how many games. It's great if you have a team ERA of 3.00 but if you only score 1-2 runs then you still lose. After looking at their projected everyday lineup, you definitely have a point. I guess many (including myself) are mesmerized by the 1-2 punch of Hernandez/Lee (could be a formidable trio if Bedard is healthy) and their overall team defense. But the offense does look to be lacking. The Angels always seem to find a way to be in the thick of things. And Texas looks to be improved.

Holliday gets Paid!
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 05:41 PM) This is going to hamstring them in more ways than just signing Pujols again. The Cards cannot spend money like the Yankees, there are going to be a lot of bargain bin fill in positions around Holliday and Pujols in the next 7 years And their farm system absolutely blows right now. Say what you will about Boras. But the dude is the Michael Jordan of his profession.

Randy Johnson
This definitely deserves its own thread. Arguably the best pitcher of the modern era. When he took the mound and I was able to watch, I stopped whatever I was doing. Particularly from the mid 90's through 2004. It's gonna be a while before we see another 6'10 freak of nature like Unit. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20...sp&c_id=mlb

Kotchman to the Mariners
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 04:01 PM) Very solid move. Kotchman won't hit for power, but he is a good hitter for average, he will not strike out much (probably BB more than K) and he is a gold glover with very good range at 1B. Still only going to be 27 this season and can get back on track with consistent playing time. Mariners have had a very good offseason. They should be pretty good regardless. But if they can get anything from Bedard (at least 20 starts would be a good starting point), they could be the second best team in the league.
-
Kotchman to the Mariners
Well the best defensive team in the game gets a little better in that department. Kotchman is well below average offensively, though. Especially for a 1B.
