QUOTE (Ken Harrelson @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 03:47 PM) I've been talking to Ozzie, and he is more excited than he is ever been about the team. Kotsay brings great versatility to the team. Just like Erstad brought a leadership role and grindy to the leadoff role. Just like Mackowiak did as a starting CF instead of a good utility guy off the bench. Just like Wise did as the leadoff guy and starter.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 10:38 AM) They use far, far better materials in their machines than most PC manufacturers. They also spend much more on the design and contruction of those machines. Which is why you get such a high quality and build. I love my macbook pro, but I wouldn't state that they use better hardware products than most PC manufacturers. In fact, if you pulled apart a macbook pro, there are lots of similar parts to other systems. For me the selling point is that it runs OS X which is UNIX. If OS X ran on other machines I would probably be more open to buy other manufacturers. The most germane argument to Apple hardware would be the tight integration of the hardware with the OS due to the fact that Apple has control over it. Where as Microsoft has to support a larger hardware base when it comes to PCs.

April 7th Game Thread vs Cleveland

QUOTE (jphat007 @ Apr 7, 2010 -> 10:21 PM) Two f***ing hits against the Indians. Thats scary bad I thought this new and improved ozzieball offense was supposed to grind out hits and runs. That Kotsay in the 5h hole is definitely awesome. -

QUOTE (beckham15 @ Apr 7, 2010 -> 08:17 PM) idk i doubt ozzie changes it up since he will see the lineup "producing" Kotsay's numbers against RHP's are Podslike. So if you are happy with Pods as your 5th hole hitter then sure keep it. I would rather see Andruw Jones who actually has some pop in the 5th hole. But I forget, platoons don't require numbers its all about what paw a guy writes with. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 7, 2010 -> 07:27 AM) Anyway...Seriously...the Chinese and Russian air forces shouldn't scare you technology-wise. We're literally 30+ years ahead of either of them before the F-22 even comes out. Sure they are a little behind. But 30 years seems a bit much.... Russian Sukhoi PAK FA 5th gen fighter craft. Looks a lot like the F22. Sure we might not be fighting the Russians, but my guess is that they sell a few of these down the road to some of the countries we might fight.

The next great pitching motion.....
southsideirish71 replied to ChiliIrishHammock24's topic in The Diamond Club
Some of that borders on a balk. You can do all the crazy antics you want, but once you come to the set straddling the pitchers plate you can't have that movement in your legs like that. Watch his lower half after he sets. It looks like he is rocking back and forth a bit. -
Nice way to start the season. Go White Sox!!!!

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Mar 29, 2010 -> 11:28 PM) He's very legit at 2B. Prior to last season, that is the only position he played throughout his career. Anyone else notice every time a player hits a ball off Linebrink (even weak pop ups) he covers his face/head real fast even when a ball is not even close to hitting him? I know, but they have transitioning him to utility guy. So unfortunately the minute he crosses the left side of the 2nd base bag he becomes a defensive liability.
-
QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Mar 29, 2010 -> 11:26 PM) Just like that it's 7-6. Linebrink made an appearance, so runs in bunches score. He is in midseason form.
-
Maybe Nix should stop wearing his mitt on his head. Someone who came into the sox organization so touted for his D, this kick the ball/throw the ball into the stands crap has got to get better. To be utility guy, he needs to be able to move around and play D.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 29, 2010 -> 03:48 PM) Like Jon Heyman who's never said or written a single interesting thing that I've ever seen. The only value he shows in the offseason is to help create an artificial market for Boras clients. -
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 27, 2010 -> 06:59 PM) I was on this a few weeks ago. Thanks to all. I will do my best to piss everyon....moderate effectively! They are truly scraping the bottom of the barrel these days. A admin from the chat crew. Good lord. Congrats man.

QUOTE (wsgdf_2 @ Mar 26, 2010 -> 02:05 PM) Oh. One other thing. Watch the ball. Sounds silly but it's true, and sometimes you need to remind yourself. You have to watch the ball all the way to the bat. You should see the ball come off your bat when you hit it. Whenever I'm pitching to my son and he starts pulling his head off, I tell him to watch the ball and I give him hammer and nail imagery. Bat=hammer. Ball=nail. It works every time. If this is hard to do, then like I said above, send everything opposite way. Almost impossible to pull your head off. I had a coach growing up that had all sorts of odd drills that seemed to really work with keeping your head on the ball and driving it. Before batting cages were all over the place. 1.) He used to paint ping pong balls different colors. He would start out with a bat, then would move to a thinner sticks such as thin metal pipes or broom handles ( kind of like stickball ) as we made more contact. You would have to yell out the color of the ball, sometimes a number if it was painted on there, and then make contact. He would start the flip drill from the side, then move behind. It really helped you keep your head on the ball, follow the movements, and make solid contact. It also allowed you to hit the ball deeper in the hitting zone, allowing you to hit to all fields. When you got into a game the ball looked like a beachball. 2.) For power, and I am sure that the telephone company is not thrilled with this. He would use a tennessee thumper, which was a pretty heavy aluminum bat. He would place a small rock in the imperfections of the telephone pole in his alley, and would have us try to drive through the pole.

QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 10:06 AM) A coffin was placed on a Missouri Democrat’s lawn, another in a string of incidents against lawmakers after their vote Sunday on a health care overhaul. Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-Mo.) had a coffin placed “near his home,” a spokesman said Wednesday evening. The coffin was from a prayer vigil. This came after Rep. Tom Perriello’s (D-Va.) brother’s gas lines were cut, Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) received death threats and Rules Committee Chairwoman Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.) received a message saying snipers were being deployed to kill children of those who voted for health care overhaul. Several other Democrats have had threats leveled against them, prompting a closed-door briefing of Democratic members by the FBI, Capitol Police and the House Sergeant at Arms. Read more: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0310/...l#ixzz0jCX9Pjrh There are fringe elements that follow a very machiavellian thought process when it comes to violence and threats of violence in the advance of their agenda. This however is not tied to one party or another, its just segments of society that are attracted to either party for whatever reason. These types of threats have little place in our society and these people should be arrested if they make threats against officials and their families. These nooses and coffins and other death based material are no different that the same tactics that were used when Bush was the president. Same type of fringe element, different political ideology.

QUOTE (joeynach @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 01:15 AM) One thing I dont understand is all the fuss about Pierre not playing or leading off against Lefties why. Pierre is a career .304/.353./.349 hitter against lefties, seems like the perfect leadoff man to me. Hes .299/.346/.380 against righties so Pierre is not one of those candidates whose numbers changes much depending on the type of pitcher. Yeah some players need to be take out becuase their numbers fall off against righties or lefties, think Josh Fields against Righties, but thats not who Pierre is. I don't understand taking out one lefty hitter, and then replacing them with another lefty hitter who can't hit lefties anymore. Then ensuring that they get the most ABs in the game.

QUOTE (joeynach @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 12:52 AM) I wouldnt base anything in stone on spring training, but if Kotsay is hitting let him play. He did have some good at bats last year, I can remember him putting the ball in play and hitting the ball hard quite frequently, even when he made out. One that stands out was against Joe Nathan in Minny when he came up with the game tying run on 2nd in the 9th with 2 outs. I remember saying to my Dad I guarantee he makes good solid contact off Nathan whether its a hit or an out I dunno....sure enough he hit a screaming liner to Cuddyer in RF for an out. If you want a fun exercise, take Kotsay's numbers last year and compare them to Pods of last year. And ask yourself a question how functional would your lineup be if you had Pods as your 3 hole hitter. Against righties..... Pods 2009 .297 BA .352 OBP .429 SLG .780 OPS Kotsay 2009 .290 BA .347 OBP .419 SLG .766 OPS

Any lineup that has Kotsay hitting 3rd and Quentin not hitting 3rd is flawed. This has more to due with what side of the plate Kotsay bats with, and Ozzies obsession with LRLRLRLR lineups. The idea that Ozzie thinking about trotting out Vizquel against lefties as the primary leadoff hitter is also all sorts of awesome. That sexy .305 OBP against lefties over the last few years should make the Erstad leadoff fiasco look like a juggernaut of offense. Its almost like he picks this crap randomly out of a hat or something.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 24, 2010 -> 01:21 PM) Oh, so you'd agree that 15 year olds shouldn't be tried as adults in criminal cases as well? Oddly I believe the 15 year old's parents are notified when they get detained by police.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 24, 2010 -> 01:07 PM) The state doesn't require any consent for this specific procedure from anyone but the patient. eta it would be no different than her going to Planned Parenthood on her own. What a cosmopolitan society we live in that 15 year olds can make decisions about surgical procedures without their parents knowledge. I wonder if it would be good for the school to call home to let the parents know that Becky is going to be late because her appendectomy ran past 7th period. Oopps, can't let the parents know about that. You know that 15 year old is definitely entitled to their privacy being a adult and all.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 24, 2010 -> 08:43 AM) You may not want to admit it, but compared to the rest of the western world, yeah. Balta your assessment of this is wrong. I personally oversee a global wan that is in 45 countries around the world. I have contracted, paid bills for, and have installed most of our internet connections around the world and can tell you that this outcry on how backwards our broadband is, is overstated at best. Sure in some of the larger European cities you can get cheap VDSL technology that provides some bang for your buck. However we are deploying that same technology here, except its branded as UVerse and FiOS. I have an office in London that has a 25 meg VDSL connection that is cheap ( 150 bucks US ) and great. In Newcastle I can only get a 6 meg down/1 meg up link and its not as cheap ( 300 bucks US ) and is problematic at best. Its like that all over the world. Rarely have I seen a place where I have said to myself I wish I had what they have from a connectivity state. My comcast connection is pretty amazing for the price to bandwidth ratio. As far as advancing broadband access, its a matter of infrastructure investment versus revenue. I had a location in Australia that was just outside the city. I was paying 6k for a 2 meg E1 circuit. We were stuck with this. No fiber in the area. Constant calls to many an ISP went with well you have no infrastructure in the area. 6 months ago a very large international company moves in and bam we get a notice a month ago that metro ethernet is being installed. So we now have a 10 meg circuit for 2k. When I asked our account rep, they stated that the revenue from that company next door allowed them to justify running fiber in the area.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 23, 2010 -> 04:42 PM) That's exactly why I brought up Soriano's name in the "Andruw Jones" thread. He hit .325/.375/.613/.988 with 6 HR last spring. Then he came north, breaking balls started breaking and he finished with an OPS just over .700. BA is currently hitting .400 with a 1.090 OPS. Thats even better than his .324BA with the 1.021 OPS he had in 07. Arizona ST is where legends live.

Hopefully Melton is just confused. Because the thought of Linebrink being our 8th inning guy scares the crap out of me.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 23, 2010 -> 03:45 PM) ACORN obviously had some iffy stuff going on in it, but the only reason it reached the point of disbanding is the right wing wanted it to get to that point and went after it. To their credit I guess though, that operation worked out. The right wing cannot do any such thing. The democrats have the majority in congress and have the leadership in the committees. The reason ACORN is going away is because the democrats allowed it to.

Repeat after me, Spring Training is about getting work in and not about results. See Anderson, Brian the king of ST for a reference of HOF ST guys who can't hit the same pitchers when they move north. Breaking ball pitchers particularly have issues in Arizona in ST. Breaking pitches do not have the depth that they do when they leave. Guys are just throwing to the glove, getting their work in, working on a location or pitch. This is why guys like Brian Anderson can look like the next version of Willie Mays in Arizona only to get punked when breaking pitches start to dart and dive. Also with about 2 weeks to go most starting pitchers start to get a dead arm period as part of the process of building their arm up to push 90 to 100 pitches.
