QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 25, 2008 -> 04:19 PM) Not sure why Piniella brings Howry into games that are close. He has been awful this year. He should of had Hermida struck out but the ump called a pitch down the middle a ball. 2 pitches later, Jeremy hits one onto Sheffield. Any time Howry craps the bed is a great day in baseball.

How Alexei's rookie year compares to other cuban players?

Cookie Rojas! Now there's a name I hadn't heard in a while. Wasn't he the Cubs 3B coach also? -

QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 26, 2008 -> 06:35 AM) He's just happy to see you . . . I think this has something to do with Alex's "Last Day as Banker" thread. Which is also appearing today in SLAM Unless go to Cuba and witness to Cubans was the last thing to do on his life list. Either that or things are FAR worse in Cuba than we thought. -

QUOTE (sox4lifeinPA @ Jul 25, 2008 -> 12:49 PM) Last Night on Earth - U2 Wait a minute, on your last day where? At work, or do you have a gun in your mouth? -
QUOTE (sox4lifeinPA @ Jul 25, 2008 -> 07:35 AM) We ran into a lot of people from Ireland, believe it or not. There was a swath of other nations represented. In mexican customs on the way back from Havana, in front of me was a French guy and his son, two english students, and behind me was a couple from Spain. I noticed a handful of Russians too. We even met a few Americans. Holguin, which is a major city on the north east side of the country, had flights from Toronto and London, as well as a handful of latin american cities. There were literally a line of buses waiting for each plane load of tourists. I gathered from some conversations that Cuba is a vacation destination for many Europeans. There's even a Sandals resort on the north central coast. So you went the Mexico route? U.S to Cancun to Cuba? Did they stamp your passport? I heard if you ask them not to, they won't.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 25, 2008 -> 10:53 AM) Cuba was a grand vacation destination for Americans before the enbargo. Thanks for the cigars ...and hopefully one day it will be that again, our Vegas Island.

I want to see "Long Way Down", Ewan McGregor's documentary about his motorcycle trip through Africa. Apparently they went from the northern tip all the way to the southern tip.

QUOTE (False Alarm @ Jul 22, 2008 -> 11:57 AM) saw the rock the bells tour in toronto this weekend--tribe called quest, de la soul, rakim & kid capri, nas, the pharcyde, mos def, method man & redman, and the cool kids. showed up too late for murs and some other acts, and the venue wasn't really prepared to deal with that many people, but the sets i saw were mostly fantastic. That's a fun line up. How much were tix?

QUOTE (sox4lifeinPA @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 12:38 PM) I was surpirsed by two things (amongst a pile of them): One of the hotels we stayed at put up a flag for every country represented by those staying in the hotel that night...and sure enough, there was a US flag up. Very humbling and honoring, I had to say. the other thing was that apparently it's a custom to hand out mixed drinks as you're being checked into your room. Once we got Mojitos and the other time was Rum and Cokes. good times. That flag thing is pretty cool. Where are the majority of the other tourists from? Just curious.

I'm jealous and getting hungry. You give me a pile of rice, a stack of beans, grilled plantains and some kind of fish and I'm good. Can you get away with calling a rum & coke a "Cuba libre"?

I heard he moved out of state and I bet he still looks over his shoulder. If knucklehead Cub fans hate him now, how do you think they'll feel about him if he begins profiting from it? That's a crappy way to live.

The Titletown segment is comedy. First of all, it doesn't matter what town has produced the most athletes. If a MF'r was born in Huckleberry, Indiana and won 5 championships with the Lakers, that doesn't make Huckleberry, Indiana Titletown USA. Secondly, if the best thing your town has to offer in sports is HS frickin football, then you do not live in Titletown USA. Third, they leave it up to a vote?? If your city is on the list, would you vote for another town? Why not just say, we're trying to see which city we get the most calls from? Here's an idea: figure out which city has won the most championships in the four major College and pro sports combined. There's your Titletown USA. Who gets your vote?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 07:17 PM) Move to Venezuela. If you can avoid the violence, you can drive all day. Gas is $.12 a gallon. The catch is you'd have to live under Generalisimo Hugito.

....and so my point is that perhaps, just perhaps Ledger shines a little brighter because those are around him are so dim. By the way, that is not to take anything away from Ledger, I thought he was good. It will be interesting to see how the Oscar buzz pans out.
-
So far so good for Mr. Harden.
-
I finally saw this today. Subtract Ledger and you have an average to possibly a boring film. I understand that every film has an actor who carries it, but is there anyone else in this film who you'd say was above average in their role?

QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Jul 21, 2008 -> 12:14 PM) One restaurant, Drago's was as good of a meal as I have ever had. I can't remember the names of two places that really stood out. One is an place that has been there since like the early 1900's I believe. It has something like 12 different dining areas. If you go when it's not busy, they will give you a tour of every room and tell you stories about Presidents and famous people who have dined in each one. Cusine+service+history=amazing. The other was a very casual place right on Bourbon St. that had a huge balcony. Great cuisine that had me racing for the men's room before when even left......so I ate again. Oh and the Hurricanes. I got back to the hotel at 4 am one morning and passed out, slept til like 11 am, got up to take a leak, stood over the toilet and STILL had the spins. Went back to bed for another 3 hours. Never had another Hurricane since.

Is J-Dilla ok? Heard he got drilled in the knee yesterday. -
New Orleans has cuisine that for some reason cannot be duplicated outside of that area. I've been to many 'authentic' New Orleans restaurants and it's not even close to the real thing.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 20, 2008 -> 12:00 PM) I don't mean this in a negative way at all, but has one team ever had as many African-Americans on them as the Brewers do? Fielder, C.C., Hall, Cameron, Weeks, Durham. Kinda off topic, does any team have less than the Sox??

"Miller Liiiiiiiiiiiiite" is the best. He still around?

Chicago is more about an accent than slang. We say the same things as everyone else, just the pronunciation is different. Since I've been in Cali., everyone points out that I skip over my T's. Instead of Bill ClinTon, it's Clint-n, instead of buTTon, it's buh-n.
