  1. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Aug 26, 2015 -> 11:59 PM) Yeah, Walsh is really the only guy that comes close. Maybe Pierce. Most of our pitchers have been so overrated by us Sox fans... LaMarr Hoyt, Jack McDowell, Mark Buehrle, etc. are so much worse than SoxTalk posters seem to think. Don't get me wrong, they're good, but their stats really aren't great. i'd take issue with buehrle being included here. the guy has been remarkably consistent for an extended period of time, thrown a no-no and perfect game and has a ring. i don't think he's a hall of famer, but if he decided to pitch another five or six years (which i think he could, but won't) i think he'd have numbers that would put him in the hof conversation. he's never been the most dominant pitcher, but there are few who can match the extended consistency he's had.
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 29, 2015 -> 06:26 PM) Not really. LaRoche is a whipping boy, but he'll hit again. Wasn't too long ago Melky's contract was an albatross. I was told by one, he wouldn't put up a 4 WAR total from his low point for the balance of the contract. He is already 25% there. He has eked his way back to a positive WAR. LaRoche will hit again. i agree with this. and if the org makes the decision it is contending this year, laroche can be a valuable piece.
  3. literal lol at a debate devolving into a squabble over who has the better beat writers.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 25, 2015 -> 05:04 PM) What available bats are a good fit for this team and actually available? I can't think of an available catcher who would be a big enough difference maker to motivate the Sox to make a deal. AJ's having a solid season and you could slot him in next to HGeovannyH for an upgrade. Stephen Vogt having a solid season for the A's but since he's controlled through 2019 that's a huge price. Lucroy tops the list but huge price again and he's having a down year. Are we willing to spend Anderson + more to get Lucroy or Vogt? 3b Todd Frazier is the obvious upgrade, but that's a defensive downgrade and another huge price. That'd again have to be Anderson + probably more than 1 of our minor league pitchers. They're not benching LaRoche, they're not benching Abreu, 2b we could make an upgrade but not likely a major bat available since it's 2b (you want to take on Cano's contract?). They're not benching Eaton, Cabrera is never going to live up to his contract since he's a terrible defender but he's hitting well lately so even if you try to upgrade him you might not get big results. The place where you could find someone cheaply, where there are guys who are free agents at the end of the year that might not cost Anderson, is right field. You'd still pay for a guy like Upton, you'd pay less for a guy like Marlon Byrd but get less of an upgrade, but are they ready to send Avi back to AAA? So to get a real upgrade it's either benching someone with a big contract, sending Avi down and replacing him, or going all in and trading Anderson + Montas + more for a major investment. i'm definitely not advocating to add. but it wouldn't surprise me if the fo took that approach if the sox continued to play well over the next week. it would undoubtedly be the incorrect decision.
  5. it would be interesting after all of this if they went out and added a bat. probably would piss a lot of people off.

  9. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 19, 2015 -> 09:20 PM) Today was probably the final nail in the sell coffin. yep. it's time. hope things start moving this week.
  10. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jul 16, 2015 -> 07:37 PM) All of this on the heels of that article the other day showing the Sox essentially last in baseball in TV ratings. As much as I personally love Hawk & Stoney together (and I think they've made great strides in the past couple of years to come together to produce a quality broadcast), there have got to be changes in the TV booth coming down the pike with horrible ratings like these to shake things up a bit. i think our bad ratings have more to do with the fact we aren't that popular and have played like crap for the better part of the last decade.
  11. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 16, 2015 -> 06:40 PM) The change I would make is to have actual Play-by-play professionals on radio and tv instead of using analysts in that role. yes, this.
  12. this was spurred by a discussion B and B had yesterday about plans for the bulls and sox when reinsdorf dies. they said (and this could totally be b.s., considering the sources) that there is a succession plan in place for the bulls, but the white sox will go up for sale almost immediately. to that end, what type of owner or ownership group could we expect to see, given all that we know about the state of the organization. would the sox an attractive option (major market, great opportunities) or terribly unattractive (bad television rating and attendance)? and what would you want to see in a new ownership group? as a caveat, i'll acknowledge that reinsdorf could own the team for another decade, and the climate could be very different then. for the purposes of this discussion i'd say assume the situation is fairly similar to what it is now.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 01:30 AM) Bruce Levine ‏@MLBBruceLevine 2h White Sox GM Rick Hahn watched top draft pick Carlos Rondon pitch on Sunday . Brass will make determination on big league promotion soon . carlos rondon will be the new josh mcgowan.
  14. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 06:07 PM) This is pretty much exactly where the Cubs are...the difference is we already have Sale/Abreu/Quintana/Garcia/Eaton/Ramirez at the major league level, whereas they have Rizzo/Castro/Arrieta and all of their prospects and more resources to work with, including the relationship with Lester and Epstein. Similar bullpen troubles, although it's hard to say anyone is actually WORSE than the Sox right now. i don't disagree with most of that. and i do think the team must take another step next year and some moves are warranted/necessary. someone mentioned earlier that next year is more of a tweener year, similar to this year's cleveland team. i'd agree with that. while i think you could spend more money with the goal of winning it next year, i don't feel that you'd really get there. there are just still so many holes.
  15. i don't really see it. i've always kind of looked at 2016 is the year that with the right moves the team could be a legitimate contender. i suppose next year's team could surprise and earn a playoff spot. that would be excellent but i still don't see that enough moves could be made this offseason where the sox would head into october with a strong chance to win it all (which to me is the goal, not successive wild cards). i hope that hahn approaches this offseason like he did the previous one. not sure it is even smart to lay out big cash as we did for abreu last year. to me, adding a few key pieces and letting some younger guys mature is smart, with the goal of perhaps adding the big pieces the following year.
  16. non-contending/rebuilding teams are going to have weak spots that keep them from contending. with this white sox team, the bullpen, and really to a larger extent the pitching staff, is the reason it isn't contending. if it wasn't the bullpen it would be something else. the team isn't ready and wasn't going to be a legitimate contender this year under any circumstance.
  17. welcome. i started at the white sox boards, too, many moons ago. this board is better. although we don't ever argue so sorry to disappoint you there.
  18. who's in charge of guarding the folding chairs?
  19. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 26, 2014 -> 07:00 AM) CC Sabathia and Bruce Chen also say "hi!" while Jeremy Guthrie raises any eyebrow.

  22. so at this point we're rooting for a rays-rangers alcs, right?
  23. QUOTE (glangon @ Jul 25, 2013 -> 02:07 PM) My 1st post here so be gentle I'm enjoying the trade deadline and the way that Hahn is handling it. His tactics are very clever and he has quickly realised that he has the cards and is looking to get the maximum return for them. Using the media and the writers the way he has is very clever, playing teams off against each other. If he plays the game right, we could end up with some very nice returns for our players. One advantage that Hahn has, which he flaps in front of the other GM's, is that most of his players are under contract until at least the end of next season and he doesn't have to sell. My personal opinion is that there will be alot more rumors kicking about and we won't really see the action until the 30th and 31st July as time runs out and teams start to get desperate. nice first post and welcome to soxtalk. agreed on all accounts. i like how this is being played. the misinformation is a good sign, imo.
