    Hurricane Rita.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 21, 2005 -> 07:38 AM) Kap, if you decide to board up any windows, I prefer the bigger sheet of plywood and anchoring to the ground. Kind of like setting a wall while framing. W| I| N| D|\ O| \ W| \| ____|________ground level xxxx|xxxxxxxx xxxx|xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxx Does the diagram make sense? The board is held against the house and nailed to a post set a foot or two into the ground. Nothing is screwed into the house and all size windows are easy to cover. No extra sawing and trying to fit to the window frame. Being an ex-framer, this will work.
  2. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Sep 21, 2005 -> 09:48 AM) The "Liberal Media" is a beast of mythology much like Bigfoot is. Conservative strategists have conceded as much (Apu or somebody else can probably help me with a reference link). But it is a very effective imaginary enemy for the conservative talking heads to rail against, a focal rallying point. Nothing plays better than having an identified big amorphous enemy like the War on Terror, the War on Drugs, or the War on the Liberal Media. Bull. The liberal media has been in existance all of my adult life. Only recently have the opposing viewpoint been available.
  3. I'm also sorry to hear about this, Queen.

    Hurricane Katrina

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 21, 2005 -> 11:02 AM) The remarkable thing about this post is that it illustrates exactly why a well-run FEMA is such a necessity. In any disaster the scale of Katrina or larger, there is going to be a nearly complete breakdown of any order that can be provided by local and state authorities. They are simply going to be overwhelmed. Policemen may lose their homes, they may even be killed. People with guns will start doing stupid things. Communication lines may be cut. Supply lines may be cut. Evacuees will be competing with looters for space on the roads. Hospitals may be damaged or even out of commission. Doctors will spend days doing black trioge (done at the airport in NOLA for about 1 week after the storm). This is where FEMA, if run properly, can be vital. FEMA can marshall the resources of the Federal government, which simply cannot be matched by any state or local authority. They can bring in resources from outside the disaster area. But most important of all...they can give orders that everyone will listen to, because those orders are coming basically from the President. They can give orders to the Guard, the military, the local law enforcement, relief agencies, and everything else. That's why a working FEMA should be such a priority...it's job should be to be a voice cutting through the confusion. Which in itself is playing a very dangerous game. FEMA, if it declares martial law, basically makes the constitution null and void. FEMA has to have it's checks and balances as well as the federal govt.
  5. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 21, 2005 -> 11:17 AM) That's a 4 game series between them at the end of the year? I thought it was 3 games. Hmph, that's very helpful. No, it's a 3 game series. One of the teams will lose at least 2 of the 3.
  6. QUOTE(S720 @ Sep 21, 2005 -> 11:15 AM) Guys, I can't control my sanity and excitement anymore! I'm beginning to sweat profusely while clinging to the sides of my head. I'm trembling violently. My voice is changing slowly into low guttural growls! I'm growling! I'm howling! My hair is growing out! My fingernails are getting longer and sharper! And I'm in pain of anticipation! Tonight is full moon, isn't it? LET'S GET READY FOR THE ONSLAUGHT! RIP THOSE INDIANS APART!!! ^ is turning into a weremonkey!
  7. QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 21, 2005 -> 11:12 AM) Yes. There's a much better chance of Zambrano becoming a lights-out ace than Buehrle. Both have thrown a ton of pitches early in their career. Zambrano has that heavy sinker with the great velocity, and even on off nights, he can still keep the ball in the park. There is also a better chance of Zambrano becoming another Jaime Navarro.
  8. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 21, 2005 -> 11:11 AM) Not a chance in Hell. Neither would I, which is the true measure of who is the better pitcher.
  9. QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 21, 2005 -> 11:08 AM) There's no one that hates the Cubs more than me, but I would take Zambrano over Buehrle in a second. Zambrano has shown more ability to dominate big games, and once his team gets a 4 run lead, that game is over. Of course, he's a f***ing nutcase, and I would never never trade Buehrle's personality for his. Which begs the question ... Would you trade Buehrle for Zambrano?
  10. Hopefully, AJ stepping on Boone with his face fully planted in the turf, will be a sign of things to come. Like in the ALCS.

Pardon the bump, but I want to remember to add this to my favorites when I get home.
  12. QUOTE(qwerty @ Sep 20, 2005 -> 05:13 PM) Tony clark's contract has some odd perks to it... Give the guy credit. He was thinking of a lot of people other than just himself.
  13. When it comes right down to it, neither Ozzie or KW will be fired. The Sox are still very much in control of their own destiny regarding advancing to the playoffs, and I believe they'll get there. As people have been saying all year, and rightly so, once you get there anything can happen.

    Bobby Jenks

QUOTE(mmmmmbeeer @ Sep 21, 2005 -> 02:04 AM) Cliff's history is Latroy Hawkins-ish. Leave him as a setup man. Well said. Jenks is young and still learning. I believe he'll be our closer for the next 5 years.
  15. Considering I didn't get to see the game tonight, someone please fill me in on exactly what occured here. I had to laugh when I saw that picture.
  16. Pic of the night. Maybe even the pic of the year!
  17. Gotta jump in on this one. How the hell can you not?
  18. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 20, 2005 -> 12:07 PM) The key to making this feasable of course will again be the battery - it takes some sort of charge in order to make the whole system work. In other words, you need to be able to carry on board the automobile the power to drive the hydrogen production system. I don't think that would be much of a problem with the battery storage capacity that is available today in hybrids.

  20. QUOTE(robinventura23 @ Sep 19, 2005 -> 11:43 AM) Putting it all in perspective.... My wife actually yelled at me this weekend for bashing the Sox. She kept telling me, "you've been a fan you're entire life, yet you think they're going to lose! What kind of fan are you? Have some faith?" I know I was one of the people to have the choking/noose avatar, but that's just my way of showing frustration. If people don't find it funny, so be it. But I'm starting over. I using my old sig and my old avatar that I used when they were on a roll. I'll be there tonight cheering them on and hopefully coming home with a sore throat from cheering and yelling so loud. But, remember, this is a different Indians team that the Sox have faced before. Their pitching and hitting are all in sync, so they have their work cut out for them. If the Sox can get through this, they they'll be playoff ready and hopefully be ready to clinch sometime next week in Detroit. So I know I've been one of the more pessimistic ones here. But us fans need to stand behind this team through thick and thin and hopefully this series will show us what this team is all about. If the crowd is electric, the team will feed off of them. Your wife is one very smart lady.
  21. QUOTE(JoshPR @ Sep 19, 2005 -> 06:14 PM) ESPN.COM Sucks tho. All the interesting articles are insiders. Sheesh So very true. I used to go to that site quite regularly. Now, I hardly ever go there.
  22. The way Mark's been pitching lately, I don't consider that a very favorable match up. I'm hoping he can step up like the solid veteran he is and come through for us though. We really need it.
  23. I hate to say this, but Pods has been a huge disappointment to this team in 2nd half. He's been hitting well enough, but he's got a mental block when it comes to stealing bases. He's not going to intimidate any pitchers if he can't steal a base. It's like he just can't pull the trigger to get that good jump. When he goes, it's like he's forcing the issue instead of reading, reacting and running. As far as being a base stealer, Scotty has something out of kilter between the ears right now.
  24. QUOTE(Rich McKinney @ Sep 19, 2005 -> 03:12 AM) How about Contreras! This guy has been ripped on every Sox board there is and was nearly run to the bullpen and out of town... This isn't a guy fading down the stretch and coming up empty against the better teams (Buehrle and Garcia). The pressure was on Contreras and he responded! Good for him. I say he's our ace now! He has been our best starting pitcher in the 2nd half. Hell, he's been close to best in baseball in the 2nd half.

    Hurricane Katrina

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Sep 16, 2005 -> 02:32 PM) We shouldn't fall for any bulls*** lines about the minimal footprint of extraction operations and the negligible impact it will have on surrounding natural systems. We shouldn't fall for scare tactics suggesting that opening ANWR and other protected areas up to drilling will actually even do anything to alleviate fuel shortages or high prices. If ANWR opened up today it wouldn't add anything to the energy supply line for a decade. And the government should absolutely require that the energy companies that win the contracts if such areas are opened (as inevitably many will be) place several billion dollars into escrow accounts BEFORE they begin operations to cover cleanup costs when human error results in spills. Well, just call it a guess, but I believe we'll be needing some oil in a decade. But I could be wrong. And for the oil companies wanting to drill in other areas, wtf is wrong with that? We need oil, they are in business to supply it to us. When 25% of our domestic oil comes from one geographic area, and it gets hammered with a natural disater, it seems diversity in location just might be a good idea.
