  1. QUOTE (Sox-35th @ May 31, 2017 -> 12:21 PM) The best odds of winning the world series is making the playoffs EVERY YEAR, not winning one bad division one year. Which is a standard that literally no one except the highest revenue teams can be held to. We will never have the revenue to retain and sign top talent like that.
  2. QUOTE (iamshack @ May 31, 2017 -> 12:13 PM) Wasn't this the entire point of your post? That Trout's injury would now lead to them selling? Absolutely. And with a healthy Trout, there was no way they did. Now there is actually a chance.
  3. QUOTE (bmags @ May 31, 2017 -> 11:37 AM) Yeah, aside from injuries, he wasn't really showing any of his tools prior to this year. That his power is finally developing is a big step. He should spend year in Kanny though. He finally seems to be getting his feet underneath him for the first time. There is no need to rush him for sure.
  4. QUOTE (iamshack @ May 30, 2017 -> 10:44 PM) I seriously hope they didn't think they actually had any kind of chance. Arte Moreno isn't much for selling.
  5. Welcome to 21st century politics. The same people who used to preach about respect for the office are now fire-breathing free speachers protecting artistic expression, while the people who used to be fire-breathing free speachers protecting artistic expression are now preaching about respect for the office.
  6. QUOTE (bmags @ May 31, 2017 -> 11:32 AM) I kind of take exception to this. We shouldn't rule out all future athletic players because of Jared Mitchell. We have also failed with a high intangible line drive hitting short stop in Gordon Beckham. We just developed a raw, athletic shortstop in Tim Anderson. We were bad at developing, period. But you won't get good by constantly relying on acquiring the high value prospects like Robert/Moncada who are very athletic, powerful prospects with some swing and miss. I would love another advanced approach college hitter, but we can't just draft a bunch of corner outfield/1b 15 home run types. And let's not forget the history here. Mitchell was on a good track until he destroyed his ankle. He was never the same after that.
  7. QUOTE (Sox-35th @ May 31, 2017 -> 11:13 AM) But it doesn't set you up for years and years of success. That's the best way to maximize your odds of winning the series. I don't care about beating a weak division. I want to be good for years and years to come. The best way to get odds of winning the world series is getting into the playoffs.
  8. QUOTE (Dam8610 @ May 31, 2017 -> 12:56 AM) Smith's power projects much better than Ravelo. The comp I read was John Olerud.
  9. QUOTE (Soha @ May 31, 2017 -> 09:48 AM) But what deal do you think they should have taken for ? The best reported deal I heard was headlined by Tyler Glasnow, who's ERA is around 7. If it's Glasnow or keep Q and suffer through his bad year, then I'll take keeping Q. Even if Q sucks the entire year, I'll still have confidence that he figures it out over the winter and is back next year. It's better than taking hot garbage for him. That and Kevin Newman, who is sporting a stellar .613 OPS this year.
  10. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 31, 2017 -> 07:28 AM) I wonder what Qs ERA is with each catcher. Seems like Smith calls a lot of curveballs last night, and they were getting crushed His BAA in the last two games is .621. When you are as good as Q and getting hit that hard, to me that means you are tipping something. Maybe he is slowing up his motion on his off-speed stuff, or he has developed a tell, but even Dylan Covey wasn't getting hit .621 hard.
  11. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ May 30, 2017 -> 10:56 PM) His AB vs. Sale tonight with the bases loaded was incredible. He kept fighting and fighting until he got his pitch. Probably my favorite AB of his ever, aside from the walk-off grand slam against Tampa in 2014. It was an instant classic.
  12. QUOTE (Sox-35th @ May 30, 2017 -> 10:52 PM) That gets you nothing. Winning a weak division gets you nothing. Greg, you have to be smarter. Wait. It gets you in the playoffs, and then anything can happen. This isn't the NBA where only the best team wins.
  13. The pen really needed Q to go deep tonight too. Ugh.
  14. Well this is where you either trust your new draft director or youi don't.
  15. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ May 30, 2017 -> 06:45 PM) Great post. Interesting data on Leury's inside zone contact rate. I am not superfamiliar with the numbers, but I have to imagine 91% is not sustainable, no?
  16. QUOTE (flavum @ May 29, 2017 -> 10:50 PM) Trout having thumb surgery. 6-8 weeks. Sucks. This really sucks for Anaheim and for us. This has to put them into sell mode for sure.
  17. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 30, 2017 -> 04:32 PM) Just more flippant comments. Biden runs for president, despite his family's personal difficulties, and he beats Trump, we're not having this conversation. Merrick Garland is still probably blocked by the GOP for some other lame excuse, though. Then again, Rabbit investigative journalism on the Biden sons' marital relations might have turned the tide to the GOP. That is what this entire thread is about. Looking down on entire groups and races of people.
  18. QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ May 30, 2017 -> 03:42 PM) I would like to see the data that confirms this because I'm certain many Republicans have received and do receive help from the government. There are plenty of poor Republicans. And the vast majority of them multi-generational poor white people as well, matching the pattern amongst the black community, hispanic community, etc.
  19. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 30, 2017 -> 03:27 PM) I have said literally none of those things. You're so ridiculous with this. I am not the movement and the movement is not me. I don't know why or how you magically made this about ME specifically. You didn't answer my question of you, conveniently. Why do you do what you do? Would the kids you work with be just fine without you and the organization you work with? You might not have intended to say them, but you have at various points.
  20. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ May 30, 2017 -> 03:43 PM) Jose Abreu and Sorcerer's WAR Jose Abreu and the Batting Cage Jose Abreu and the Player of the Week Jose Abreu and the Gatorade Cooler of Victory Jose Abreu and the Order of the All-Star Team Jose Abreu and the Cuban Prospects Jose Abreu and the Hallowed Stats (Parts 1 and 2)
  21. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ May 30, 2017 -> 03:34 PM) But HERO WORSHIP I am going to go with one for each of his POTW awards
  22. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ May 30, 2017 -> 02:34 PM) Player of the year? Bah, week.
  23. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ May 30, 2017 -> 02:25 PM) Leury Garcia? I don't think so. After having 2 HR in his first 340 ML PAs, he has 6 in his last 159. It's not gonna last. This is your classic Moneymaker variance. He's having a nice couple of months, but everything points to a sharp regression to norms and beware the power outage which may be precipitous. Yolmer Sanchez? Hell no. He's young, but this guy is your classic late inning defensive replacement who just happens to be hitting .300 for a month. He'll simmer down to his usually .240 self soon enough. He doesn't have enough power to be effective long term. Davidson is the wildcard. He has so few PA at the ML level we have no idea what we're getting. If he has enough pop, .230 with 25 homers is just fine at the cell. Sanchez has been super-young for each level at the first visit. He was 19 in Kannapolis, and 20 on his first stop at Winston Salem, as well as AA, and even AAA. His first ML call up he was 22. If you look at his second go around in Charlotte, you see some pretty serious improvements. His OPS went from .589 to .761 from his first to second year. He was even better at age 23 in a short stint in AAA. In fact his ML numbers go from .593 last year to .788 so far this year, or really similar to the jump he made in AAA progress, and his major league numbers aren't crazy ahead of what he did in AAA to make you think he couldn't sustain a similar number at the majors.
  24. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 30, 2017 -> 02:17 PM) Recognizing facts and supporting my black friends and allies (and other marginalized communities) in their fight for these causes is not marginalizing anyone, no matter how hard you try and spin it. Do you seriously not recognize your monumental hypocrisy? Do you think your help is instrumental to helping them succeed? Do they need you? No? Then why do you do it? Supporting them by telling they have to get help, because they can't do it on their own. Without you they just end up as drug dealers. To me that is marginalizing them. But reading all of the absurdities and Self-aggrandizement going on here, that would be the obvious conclusion if you accepted certain people's inferiority as fact, I can see how you would view it that way. They have to have your help.
