I don't think they knew if they had a legit 4th OF in Shuck, or how Beckham would respond to to his utility role, and Bonafacio covered both, but since Shuck and Beckham have sufficiently filled their roles, and since Bonafacio has sucked so far, he just has no real role on the team anymore. I thought the Bonafacio signing was a good one when it happened, and I'm pretty sure I recall a number of posters asking for the signing before it actually happened, so I don't think it was a bad move by Hahn at the time. It just didn't work out. That being said, any possibility that an Alexei trade is in the near future, and that why Saladino is here?

**7/7 Tad less epic game Thread! Sox vs Jays**

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 7, 2015 -> 12:00 PM) Daryl Van Schouwen @CST_soxvan 30m30 minutes ago White Sox must stay hot or else. Jose Quintana (4-7, 3.81) has made 7 straight quality starts w 2.78 ERA. Has 2.99 ERA over last 13 starts. And only 2 wins in his last 7, and 3 in his last 13 to show for it. He's only given up more than 3 ER in one of his last 13 games, and has given up less than 3 ER in nine of them. That is some seriously bad luck. -

White Sox vs Orioles Game 1

Do not let this game get to Hardy. I don't care how bad he's been, he is a Sox killer, and needs to make up for the botched DP. -

I have had this feeling for a while, too. It seems hard to believe that there is some team philosophy that exists that is responsible for the trend (if there really is one). Maybe it's just a bigger spotlight than the players were used to on other teams. I was really hoping they signed Victor Martinez in the offseason, because even at his age, I thought he would make a good litmus test. The guy has only hit less than .300 5 out 14 years (prior to 2015), and still managed .278 as the lowest of those 5 years, and each of those 5 years was less than a full season for one reason or another. He's not doing so hot to start this year, so maybe it wouldn't have been such a great test, but I guess we'll never know. I would just love to see what happens if the Sox get a guy like Trout or Miggy, arguably both still in their prime (Miggy is a bit older, but simply does not stop hitting). I know it's never going to happen, but I often wonder if they came here, would they decline as well.

GAMETHREAD - 5/23 - Twins @ White Sox

QUOTE (Soxfest @ May 23, 2015 -> 04:14 PM) Minn 4 runs already off Sale.....................Chance for Sox to impress some fans not good. They rocked him last time they faced him, too. Not good if the Twins have Sale's number. -
QUOTE (LDF @ May 9, 2015 -> 03:39 PM) i think most have said it. it is his defense that will carry him. now comes the idea of how the sox will address this lack of hitting from the SS position. this is my opinion. a 200 - 220 avg hitting ss with a great D in the majors. can the fans and the org live with that?? Uh...hello? Seriously, though, I realize Ozzie wasn't a .200-.220 type hitter, but he wasn't exactly an offensive SS either. His D was the key to his success. And fans and the org loved him. Different times, I know, but I don't see fans or the org having a problem with a D-first SS. That is with the caveat that every other position on the field isn't filled with a D-first player either. One, maybe even two sub-par hitters are OK in a lineup if their defense is saving runs on the other end, but if the rest of the lineup can't hit either, then you need to be looking for good, consistent hitting from whatever position you are filling. That's my opinion anyway.

I saw a jersey with the name Jones on it behind Samrdzija in his interview last night and wondered if it meant Nate Jones was coming back soon. Maybe.

5/6 Tigers at White Sox
PorkChopExpress replied to Swingandalongonetoleft's topic in 2015 Season in Review
I'd like to see them try Garcia in the 3rd spot, and bump Abreu and LaRoche back one. I know it messes with the R-L-R-L-R thing, but you could also swap Ramirez and Gillaspie and still have R-R-L-R-L. Garcia is not showing a lot of power yet, but he's hitting the ball and getting on base better than anyone else right now. Shake things up. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 6, 2015 -> 01:46 PM) And that can be easily solved by firing the manager, and hiring a guy whose teams lost 99,96,96,92 games from 2011-2014 becoming the first Twins manager to be fired since the same season Hawk fired Tony LaRussa. Come on. His first 9 years (2002-2010) he led the Twins to a division title six times, had a losing season only once, and had 90+ wins five times. He was manager of the year in 2010, runner up for that honor in 03, 04, 06, 08 and 09, and 3rd place in 02. Yeah, his last four years were bad, but are you suggesting he's not a good manager? And to be clear, I'm not advocating for Robin's firing, but if it were to happen, I'd be happy to see Gardenhire on the south side.

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Apr 23, 2015 -> 11:06 AM) too bad Rodon isn't starting a game. Their starting lineup had no chance against him in that ST start. Plus he could plunk 5 or 6 of them and just blame it on being wild, and no one could argue after his last appearance. -

Sox Acquire Yency Almonte (as PTBNL in Gordon Beckham Trade)

How many times do you think a team has completed a trade after reacquiring the player they traded away in the first place? -
QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Feb 4, 2015 -> 08:40 AM) I'll guess Shields gets 3/54M with a 4th year option that vests based upon IP making it a potential 4/72M. I think the Yanks come in a sign Shields. This, but it's said he has a strong preference for a west coast team, and I could see the Angels swooping in and making this deal. With all of the other moves the Padres made this off-season, they should get involved to beef up that rotation, but who knows. Then there's always the Dodgers.

Give me an off-season you enjoyed more than this 2014-2015...
PorkChopExpress replied to shipps's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I really enjoyed the 04-05 off-season. 2004 left such a bad taste in my mouth with the Twins, and Torii Hunter/Jamie Burke, Ordonez going down, Carlos Lee's and Jose Valentin's apparent stat-first approach, etc. The team just had no life, and to me, the off-season represented a shift in philosophy, from the HR-or-nothing, individual stats mentality to a balanced, whole-team offense. We got rid of Lee and added Pods (and Vizcaino), power for speed, which I loved. We picked up AJ, the type of player that team really needed, i.e., personality, passion, smarts and ability. We picked up JD, which I thought was a steal, especially when stories came out about how another team offered him a bigger contract, but he said he had already given his word to KW, and he wouldn't go back on that - I liked what I knew about him and his game previously, and felt a couple freak injuries held him back, and he was still good, but when that story came out I knew we landed someone special. Then Iguchi, who was just a perfect fit for that team and what it was Ozzie and KW were trying to accomplish - team first. Then El Duque, the ultimate veteran and champion, and clearly he had an effect on Contreras. I liked the Dustin Hermanson pick-up, but had no idea how valuable he would become. It was just a great off-season, and I don't remember being upset about any of the moves, or upset that we didn't make other moves. -
Sox sign Gordon Beckham, designate Viciedo for Assignment

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 28, 2015 -> 03:54 PM) Dan Hayes @CSNHayes 51m51 minutes ago Rick Hahn: We’ve put ourselves in a place where we’re decently insulated against the unexpected and have some flexibility to just 1/2 Rick Hahn 2/2: take the guy who we feel in the end is going to help us win the most ballgames, not necessarily cover a position of need. Scott Merkin @scottmerkin 54m54 minutes ago Hahn: "Again it’s about having a flexible roster, one that allows Robin to exploit matchups whenever they present themselves to him ... More Hahn: ".. At the same time, we have insurance policies if things should not go entirely according to plan." Daryl Van Schouwen @CST_soxvan 1h1 hour ago Hahn "will flush out interest" in Viciedo and "find him a better home. It won't surprise us if he has a very successful career elsewhere." I like how Hahn is thinking. I figure you've got 12 pitchers, and for the 13 remaining players, a depth chart something like this: 1B: Abreu/LaRoche 2B: Sanchez/Beckham/Bonifacio SS: Ramirez/Beckham/Sanchez/Bonifacio (he's played there before) 3B: Gillaspie/Beckham/Bonifacio C: Flowers/BU LF: Cabrera/Shuck/Bonifacio CF: Eaton/Bonifacio/Shuck RF: Garcia/Shuck/Bonifacio DH: LaRoche/Abreu/any of the above Obviously, Bonifacio is the super utility and plays just about anywhere, his most important backup role being CF. He'll get a decent amount of playing time doing that. Beckham is the infield utility guy and Shuck (or someone else) is the 4th OF. If If Beckham or Bonifacio start the season on a tear, then maybe they become the starting 2B, with Sanchez taking a utility role. If either falters, then they get replaced by Saladino or someone else from our system. Same for Shuck. -

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 11:07 AM) Four consecutive division titles, that's pretty good in my book Not to mention two World Series Appearances since '06, and an additional two ALCS appearances in that time frame. -
QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 11:42 AM) KW on MLB Network said the Sox came to San Diego with three targets. They got two. I'd say number three is Jason Castro. Unless the third target was a landing spot for Danks/Viciedo, I'd think it was a LF to replace Viciedo. CarGo? Wil Myers? Upton? Crawford/Kemp/Ethier? Those seem like the names that have any kind of rumor linked to them.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 08:37 AM) Eh, still don't like it and fully expect the team to disappoint, but I'm a lot less annoyed with actually trying to win than throwing in the towel like we did last offseason. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 08:48 AM) Are you kidding? We signed an extra DH and committed to carrying Leury Garcia on the roster before the winter meetings. I canceled my Extra Innings subscription that day because it was clear the Sox didn't care about winning one iota last year. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 09:22 AM) I agree the white sox didn't give up a lot, but that doesn't mean I like the concept of going all in on 2015. I can satisfy myself with the fact that such an "all in" kind of move means that in the event it fails, which I still think is likely, I shouldn't have to put up with another Ventura coaching embarrassment season. Seems a bit inconsistent. When they didn't go all in prior to 2014 because, as everyone knew, it was a rebuilding/retooling year, you say they threw in the towel and didn't care about winning. When they do go all in this year and show they do in fact care about winning, you don't like that concept. What is it you want the Sox to do, other than fire Ventura.
