Who is going to be our best starter next season?
ChiliIrishHammock24 replied to balfanman's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Peavy or E-Jax. -
QUOTE (gatnom @ Nov 10, 2010 -> 06:20 PM) For everybody who wants to go out and sign some high priced free agents, I'd like you to do this: If you look at the Soxtalk banner at the top, underneath it you will see a few links to SoxNet, FutureSox, etc. I'd like you to click on "Kalapse's Sox Payroll Resource." Then, navigate to the first post and click on the image to increase its size (you may have to do this twice). If you scroll down to the middle of the screen, you will see a line that says "Actual Payroll". The first number in red was our opening day payroll with the money we got from other clubs included. Now, I want you to look at the number directly to the right. That's the money we already have committed to next year's payroll minus Edwin Jackson, John Danks, Bobby Jenks, Carlos Quentin, Tony Pena, Matt Thornton, Omar Vizquel, and Ramon Castro. So in order to get a more accurate place of where we are at next year, add $8.35M for Jackson, $7M for Danks, 0 for Jenks, $5M for Quentin, $1.5M for Pena, 2.75M for Thornton, $1.75M for Vizquel, and $1M for Castro. Adding the numbers together gave me $91.95M. If you compare that number to last years opening day number, we have roughly $8M to spend. Going by the numbers people have been throwing out for Konerko, we can't even afford him, let alone a highly sought after player. Since the salary figures for Danks, Quentin, and Pena were estimates, they are obviously not exact, so if you want to say that I'm overestimating a bit, even if I was off by $5M (which is a lot) what more can you do to sign high priced free agents with $13M that you couldn't do with $8M? You could even take it a step further and say that we took on money during the season, so we have more to spend than what we spent on the opening day roster last year. We ended the season with a payroll of $103M, so that's only $3M more than opening day. It also appears to be the organization's M.O. to leave some flexibility in their payroll to make acquisitions at the trade deadline, so it's unlikely that we would have that money to spend in the off season anyways. Is $16M a year enough to get Crawford (and this is probably less than we have to spend)? Let's not forget that we have some other pretty big holes to fill on our roster, as well. This post is sobering, but it also doesn't mention how creative Kenny can be with trades and such. I mean, who is to say that Quentin and Buehrle don't get tossed somewhere. That's $19M right there that is freed up. Or what is Danks gets shipped somewhere, there is $7M. Not saying any of these are likely (although I still put my money on Danks leaving), but your scenario is assuming we don't trade anyone away.

I am kind of thinking KW might revisit Prince Fielder with Beckham as his bait, under the condition that Fielder gets an extension. Then again, I heard Ryan Braun is on the trading block, and he would be much more valuable due to positional value and especially his contract. Would also cost a ton to get him, but an OF of Pierre-Rios-Braun would be incredible.

White Sox Off-Season Catch All Thread
ChiliIrishHammock24 replied to Chisoxfn's topic in 2011 Season in Review
I would pick Hudson (am NOT against the Jackson trade though) and I would pick Manny Ramirez. Manny is certainly the best hitter we have had in a while, even though is he aging. I had thoughts of Chris Young or Brandon Allen too. -
QUOTE (juddling @ Nov 11, 2010 -> 12:41 AM) Terriers continues to make me say "WOW". Another sure-fire episode. watching Katie whisper her secret into Britt's ear and his reaction just about ripped MY heart out. great acting all around. Terriers is soo legit. Terriers and Dexter are neck-and-neck for my 2nd favorite show after Breaking Bad.

A's are just stocking themselves with OF I guess. That gives them 6 now.
-
Just finished Season 2 of Dexter. Show is great. I wish Netflix has seasons 3 and 4 streaming though. Guess I'll have to watch it online somewhere.

Can we please close and delete this now? Every time I see this thread, it kills a part of my soul.

Don't forget that 1 person predicted Olivo would come back to us!

Escobar is 0-4, 3 K Mitchell is 0-3, 3 K

Cooper wants Sale in 2011 bullpen
ChiliIrishHammock24 replied to Balta1701's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 9, 2010 -> 08:45 AM) How about if he becomes a top closer? Is that still a waste of the 13th pick? If they didn't at least try him out as a starter, yes. -

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 8, 2010 -> 08:45 PM) I hope to god you're lying. Otherwise there was no reason to take him with the 13th pick. I agree. Taking a reliever with the 13th overall pick is a laughable idea. I will flip if the Sox decide to make him a bullpen pitcher. -
QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 9, 2010 -> 12:47 AM) I loved the use of the bear tonight, but was shocked that Rogen was the best they could do for a first guest. Kinda made the show seem second rate. He says that Seth was his 1st choice, but it was definitely Tom Hanks, who is on tomorrow.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 7, 2010 -> 11:17 PM) Funny how a lot of us figure Vizquel will be equally productive next season yet most people figure a guy 10 years younger in Paulie is about to hit the brick wall where he suddenly declines. Just.Pay.Paulie. It's a lot easier to replicate an average offensive year than it is to replicate an MVP-caliber season. Come on, that's not a good comparison at ALL.

Take it easy Gordon, and rest that wrist.

Umm...so where is Undercover Boss? Why is Amazing Race on my TV? THIS IS BULLs***! Back to the Cowboys game for me I guess.

Trade Candidates for Kenny this offseason
ChiliIrishHammock24 replied to macsandz's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 7, 2010 -> 05:17 PM) I'm not sure I'd give up Viciedo for him. He's just so inconsistent so far in his career. Big power potential, but the difference between an above average bat and a below average bat is basically whether he gets a handful of hits. With 210+ K's almost guaranteed, so much depends on BABIP...plus, next season his salary jumps from the minimum to $5 mil, and then up to $7, with an $11 mil 2013 option (He's getting paid based on last year, not on this year). Adam Dunn thinks Mark Reynolds strikes out too much. -

Mark Reynolds is apparently on the trading block. I wonder if KW would like to trade for Reynold's big bat. Wonder who would be traded back? Package around Viciedo? -
Sox trying to resign PK and AJ
ChiliIrishHammock24 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Keith Law came out with his top 50 Free Agents list. Not surprisingly, Konerko isn't viewed highly in Law's eyes. He ranks Konerko as the 12th best Free Agent, behind the likes of Jake Westbrook, Jorga De La Rosa, Andy Pettite, and a couple other LOL names. About Konerko he describes Konerko as "The biggest time-bomb in this class as a low-defense, old man slugger". He says that whoever signs him will be an overpay based on his name, and says Konerko is very close to "the cliff". -
Foxsports put together a panel of 5 experts to make predictions for Free Agents, as far as White Sox picks went.... Konerko: 0 of the 5 thought Konerko would return to the Sox. and Dunn: 2 of the 5 thought Dunn would come to the Sox. 2 said the Tigers, and 1 said the Cubs.

QUOTE (Cali @ Nov 6, 2010 -> 07:21 PM) What the hell? How is Escobar not a starter in this All-Star game? I don't know, but I'm fine w/ it since I just started watching, and neither Mitchell nor Escobar has played yet.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 6, 2010 -> 04:14 PM) If the Sox do not retain AJ, Konerko or Jenks, I think it would be fair to officially put 2005 in the rear view. Enjoy the championship, but it will be time to start holding all accountable by what is going on now, not giving anyone a pass because of what happened 5 years ago. I think Buehrle would be the only one left unless Garcia re-signed. Until we sign Pods.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 6, 2010 -> 12:56 PM) I don't see how I'd say "Meh" at average performance out of a rookie 3b. "I think neither will be more than average offensive players." Average offensive player being the best case scenario.
