I don't get it
Crawford yes. I don't think the Sox should go for him if he costs much. Gonzalez no. He is hardly an expensive vet. He has a great bat, good defense, a very team friendly contract and will be 28. He would be a huge coup for this team, even if I don't see that deal happening realistically.

You're KW in the offseason
If i'm KW I wait and see who is non-tendered before I make any moves. Edit - many moves. Not any. Obv. he shouldn't just sit around a month with his thumb up his keister.

Curtis Granderson Anyone
A name I haven't seen mentioned much is Luke Scott. He played DH on the Orioles but only because they have a stacked OF, he's not a statue. He played RF for the Astros and LF for the O's so he could slot into either. He's a lefty with decent pop and a pretty consistent OPS. Some injury risk, but wouldn't cost too much i'd guess. Anyways, just a thought, as he seems a more likely target than Grandy.

I could see a 1 year deal for Randy Winn.

KW: Pods not likely to come back
QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 02:39 PM) I dont think Pods is the full time answer in CF defensively, and he has not shown the ability to stay healthy through an entire season. I think a CF upgrade will be the priority for the offense for the rest of the offseason along with re-tooling the bullpen a little. Mike Cameron as a stopgap? He could fill in till Danks/Mitchell can step up.

I don't like giving up two minimum salaries for a 1 WAR, 4.5MM guy. Especially from a GM who constantly b****es about not having the cash to get good players.

Sox acquire Mark Teahen, $$$ for Getz/Fields
BTW though I hate this move in a vaccuum, if they move salary somewhere else it might not be a big deal. None of the players in this trade are world beaters and Teahan has the best track record of those involved.

Brad Hawpe?
It would also allow them to play Dexter Fowler and Carlos Gonzalez every day, so I can see why they would want to trade him, given his massive defensive liability and 7.5 million salary. I wouldn't mind a trade for him, since you could hide his defense at DH, but a) it runs contrary to what KW seems to be planning for this team and b ) I don't know that the Sox have anything the Rocks want that badly. Hudson I guess.

Brad Hawpe?
He has trouble hitting lefties, according to reports. He is also remarkably bad in right field, worse than Dye.

Dewayne Wise Declares Free Agency
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 9, 2009 -> 12:04 PM) I would say the impossible situation was Ozzie declaring him the CF starter. Everyone, probably including Wise deep down, knew he was a marginal bench player and wasnt supposed to be counted on to be the starting CF. He was, and he did what everyone thought he would, hit poorly. Players in baseball have roles, every one of them. Wise was stuck into a role that his career numbers dictated he should not have been. Pretty much. You can blame Ozzie, maybe, a little, for playing him over Anderson, a marginally better player. You can blame KW, mostly, for not providing any better options. You can blame the economy for scaring the Sox into cutting 25 mil in payroll. But you can hardly blame Wise, a career minor leaguer, for hitting like a career minor leaguer.

Dewayne Wise Declares Free Agency
Good guy, best of luck, he'll probably get a minor league deal somewhere. He gets kind of a bad rap for being put in an impossible situation. Now to cull Lillibridge...

Mat Gamel Discussion
I can appreciate wanting to keep this rotation together. But you also have to appreciate that a balanced team is more likely to win than a one dimensional team. If trading a starter makes the offense and defense better then I think it is necessary, since that was so lacking this season.

Better than Neftali? That seems like a stretch. Maybe between Davis and Carrasco.

Looking at the Rays as they stand, they'd probably want Flowers + some for Crawford.

Mat Gamel Discussion
QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Oct 8, 2009 -> 10:32 AM) A team that has 4 quality starters, why does everyone want to mess with that? A few reasons... 1. This team has serious holes in a couple places - a corner outfield spot, a power bat, preferably left handed, and a bullpen spot or two. 2. This team likely doesn't have the money to address these issues through FA, as we've seen in numerous speculations. If JR decides to change that, well, color me surprised and delighted. 3. Gavin has a lot of value right now, and could probably fill one or two of those holes with quality MLB talent. 4. Its not like KW hasn't traded away a core pitcher to address a problem before. Especially with a young, unproven starter waiting in the wings. Not sayin, just sayin. edit - I don't think Gamel is in the Sox plans though. They have a lesser version of him that they are already trying to unload - no real position, defensive liability, doesn't hit hard enough to be a real DH... sound familiar?

Carey and McCarver are just, knitting needles to the brain. The other guys I could give or take.

Fitting Ending to 2009 Season
From 2006-2008 Dye posted a -21 UZR rating or worse in RF. You can argue the validity of UZR as a stat somewhat but when the numbers are that bad for that long, its pretty obvious that the player is a bad defender. Also according to Fangraphs JD played at SS for a third of an inning in 2005. Weird.

Fitting Ending to 2009 Season
Dye's defense is kinda smoke and mirrors. It looks like he is really hustling and makes spectacular plays but really its just that he is slow and has no range. He looks like he is playing good defense (sometimes) but he is definitely not. Then again sometimes a ball goes right over his head and you're just
