Trade Candidates: Hitters
Sure - but there is likely to be an "issue" with whomever we acquire to play RF. At least with Peralta he shouldn't cost much via trade or 2020 AAV, isn't a long term commitment, he provides lineup balance, plus defense and plus OBP. He is a pretty good fit. If he were always healthy, he'd cost quite a bit more. He's also really only had 2 injuries of substance in his 5 full major league seasons. Not ideal, but 3 of the past 4 season he has appeared in 140+ games. I also feel like Leury would fill in for Peralta most days if he hit the IL, not Engel. Peralta and Leury are also pretty good platoon mates.

Sunday Notes: Hahn asked for Devers in Sale trade (and updates on TJ guys)
He was last season. Not sure if he'll be a milb free agent this offseason, though. He did not pitch at all in 2019 due to injuries.

Trade Candidates: Hitters
I like David Peralta as a stop gap option. 1 year of control - should be around $9M in final year of arb. Plus defender. Left handed bat. Career .346 OBP. There is talk that Peralta is a non-tender candidate, so I imagine the Dbacks wouldn't want a ton besides the salary relief. I think he's a good fit to cover RF in 2020 without a long term commitment, and then revisit a year from now. Hopefully by then Adolfo is ready to take over, but if not, then would be an appropriate time to back up the Brinks truck for Mookie.

Would you trade for Mookie Betts, and what would you trade
Betts is not going to sign an extension. There is zero reason for him to not test free agency. Trading assets for 1 year of a star player before the Sox are clearly in contention mode would be idiotic. Mookie most likely doesn't even make this a playoff team in 2020. If the Red Sox want to trade Betts for something like Rutherford + Sheets + Pilkington - sure make the deal, and roll the dice. There is no point in giving up anything more than that, and there is a 0% chance a team closer to contention would not beat that package. Giving up Madrigal for 1 year of Betts is the type of deal that is going to get hammered for a decade as Madrigal becomes one of the stars of baseball in Boston. Hahn pretty much said last week that 1 year rentals that will require a lot to acquire are not really in the cards, so not sure why this is still being discussed.

What about Collins?
Platoon DH/1B/catcher. We’ll get plenty of ABs against right handed pitching in 2020.

Would you trade for Mookie Betts, and what would you trade
When is the last time this has happened in MLB? Honest question. It’s been awhile.

Predict the Market: FA Contracts
There is zero percent chance that Boston would trade Betts, one of the very best players in the game - even if only for a year - for a guy that is going to be nontendered and a guy that has 2 years of control but will miss the majority of 1 season with TJS. To suggest otherwise is just plain silly.

Cmon man. Stop with this spamming nonsense.

He can have the illustrious distinction for 1 season!

A Realistic Offseason
Especially when, in today's market, there should be plenty of solid SP options available on 1 year deals. Just make the first SP add an impact one. The one situation where I could get behind the logic on two SP on multiyear deals is Wheeler + Ryu. And that is if Ryu could actually be attained a 2 year deal in the $30-35M range a FG projected.
-
Grandal - Early Off-Season Speculation
I don't think Pederson would cost much, and yes I would perfer him to Castellanos who I hate as a fit unless the Sox go balls to the walls. But I'd love to hear your extensive list of options.
-
A Realistic Offseason
Unless you think the Sox plan to flirt with the luxury tax on 2022-2025, there is zero percent chance the OD payroll is north of $150M. To do what you’re proposing in one offseason is just simply not feasible.
-
Grandal - Early Off-Season Speculation
Yah, its less than ideal. But most lefties don't hit lefties well, and Leury can play some RF against lefties. He hits lefties very well.
-
Grandal - Early Off-Season Speculation
Also only for 1 season, whereas you're likely committing to at least 4 years with Castellanos. So now you either have a poor OF defense for the next 4 years, or you have an expensive DH with a slightly over league average bat.
-
A Realistic Offseason
Yah, its pretty simple. One multi-year SP, one backend guy on 1 year deal. Which is why the one multi-year SP needs to be Wheeler or Ryu and not Keuchel or Hamels. Sox don't need to spend the money necessary to sign 2 SP to longer term deals. Allocate elsewhere.

A Realistic Offseason
Very predictable content.

Qualifying Offer Decisions
Will Smith should be in there too. So 8 reject, 2 accept. About as I expected.

Zack Wheeler Thread
The Twins wanted Odorizzi back. 4 of their 5 SP were free agents. Now they have Berrios, Odorizzi and Graterol, though Graterol isn't going to be able to be in the rotation the full year. They still need at least 2 more SP.
-
Sox issue qualifying offer to Abreu
Its unnecessary though. I am not going to worry about it until we get a real answer though.
-
Qualifying Offer Decisions
Odorizzi accepts QO. Will Smith signs with Braves - 3 years $40m (so he declines)
-
Trade Candidates: SP
Effectively, would I sign a 36 year old Grienke to a 2 year $70M deal in this market? Probably not. I'd rather bet a slightly more money for double the years on Wheeler.

A Realistic Offseason
Insert Boston media comment.

Sox issue qualifying offer to Abreu
Are you referring to Castellanos? You're also ignoring the fact that Jose basically has 1/$17.8M in hand. That obviously changes the calculus for him. He'd be a moron to turn down 1/$17.8M for anything under $2/25M, IMO.
-
Sox issue qualifying offer to Abreu
Your take on this is a bit extreme. Jose is a lifetime .293/.349/.513 hitter coming off a .284/.330/.503 season and lead the AL in RBIs. While DH/1B types aren't getting paid like they used to, Jose Abreu will be in the big leagues for several more seasons barring a dramatic drop off. The chances of him becoming a milb contract guy a year from now are pretty small. If I were Jose, I wouldn't accept anything under 2/$30M. Which clearly he hasn't, which is why we are where we are.
