QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Sep 6, 2017 -> 01:58 PM) Hope Cordell isn't the next Tilson. I think most of us expected to see him this year but it never happened. Yah back problems are no joke.

QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 6, 2017 -> 01:39 PM) AFter how little players like JD Martinez netted as a rental and legitimately great bat, I don't see us doing that. Maybe a catcher. I think we'll sign some camp invitee pitchers and a bunch of bullpen flyers, but I can't see us doing more than some waiver claims we don't mind losing if they are DFAd such as Asche and Liriano. Agreed. We could use a backend SP and some relief arms, but we have plenty of guys that need at bats. Don't really see the point in scrap heaping bats. Minors deals? Sure, go to town. But we need to continue to give Davidson, Delmonico, Leury, Cordell, etc., etc., at bats.

QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 6, 2017 -> 11:56 AM) I find it kinda odd how much we heard about Sanchez' arm being a detriment to being a true utility player (playing SS), and yet I've been watching him throw ropes from 3rd base every game. Sanchez playing all infield positions makes him absolutely bench player #1. He's too good and valuable to young pitchers. Just spitballing (leaving C out as thats a bit different beast) LF Cordell? CF L Garcia RF A Garcia 3b Davidson SS Anderson 3b Yoan 1b Abreu DH Delmonico Next tier priority Yolmer Cordell Gillaspie Fight it out W Garcia Engel Saladino Hansen Tilson (hahaha jk) Peterson Liriano J Peter If you are currently in that Fight It Out tier and in the big leagues, I'd just soak it in. Like this year, it very well may come down to who is out of options next year. We know that Davidson, Yolmer, and Leury are. Cordell and Gillaspie have been on a 40 man for at least 2 years, so they may be out of options next year. Pretty sure sure Liriano and Peterson will be as well. Not sure on Willy or Saladino (guessing Tyler is and Willy isn't). Engel, Tilson, Peter should all be able to be safely sent to AAA (Peter not even on 40 yet).

Holland released, Fry called up, Moncada activated.
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 6, 2017 -> 10:29 AM) What a class act! https://www.instagram.com/p/BYtEJ-4gHVp/ He is a great dude. Wish him the best.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 02:46 PM) Yeah, as long as you are paying him, you'll always need someone to eat innings, and if you aren't going to win, his mediocrity is fine as long as it doesn't get too out of hand. Like you wrote, since he changed arm angles, he has been a bit better. I actually saw a 94 on the board yesterday. The HR will still kill him. I saw an interesting idea on twitter a couple weeks ago about the Sox making him the closer next year. Now that may be a bit aggressive, but I do wonder if he could be decent reliever. Continue to drop that arm angle and perhaps he could add a few ticks on the radar and recreate himself as a pensman to finish off his career. I would imagine he would be open to the idea as he has to know his days in a major league rotation are numbered. Problem is, after Rodon, Giolito and Lopez...they run out of options. I suppose they could put Danish out there to start the season (to me he is clearly a reliever and should be put in the MLB pen next season) along with a scrap heap FA. If they really plan on pushing Kopech up early in the year, maybe that makes sense. But I just feel like Shields has a place in the rotation to start the season.

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 02:34 PM) About time...wish they'd do the same to Shields. Shields has been relatively decent his last 6 starts since he dropped his arm angle. Definitely not great, but decent. Probably worth keeping him around in hopes someone will take him off our hands next summer. Super unlikely, but oh well.

Holland released, Fry called up, Moncada activated.
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 01:57 PM) Do we know how that happened? Was he extremely lucky to start the year or was there an injury or velocity drop? It was mainly luck. His peripherals were always garbage.

Holland released, Fry called up, Moncada activated.
QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 01:26 PM) Doesn't seem like the org is even concerned with 2018 draft position much. Because they released Holland? The Sox bullpen is still horrific. They're going to lose plenty of games. Top 4 pick is a lock, but Tigers coming on fast. Still think they'll finish with #3 pick.

QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 01:14 PM) Merkin thinks that's it for additional call ups A little surprised no Goldberg. Other than that, not too surprising. I thought it was possible Danish would get a look out of the pen, but with his car accident, less surprising (even if injuries are indeed minor).

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 01:12 PM) Holland was a good clubhouse presence and didn't blame anyone but himself. He wasn't going to be here next year so his release makes baseball sense. I have concerns about Beck and Pelfrey also Whats there to be concerned about? Neither will be on the team next season.

Gotta feel for Holland a bit. An A+ dude that took his struggles in stride. I followed him on snapchat all season and it was super cool to get an inside look inside the sox clubhouse, team plane, pregame activities, etc. Wish him the best.

2017 Minor League Catch-All thread
QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 4, 2017 -> 04:09 PM) Myles Jaye is on the Tigers too. Earned that callup via a 1.6 WHIP in AAA. Gross.

Avi Hot streak
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 10:58 AM) I've been saying he'll probably end up at 1B for them next season anyway. I'd prefer to save 1B for a FA bopper when were ready. Or maybe Burger ends up there if we sign a 3B. We also have a few internal options at 1B, and gotta give Abreu some credit - he has improved over there this year. I wouldn't trade Avi for a 1B.

Avi Hot streak
QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 08:48 AM) Suggesting this again: Ryan McMahon for Avi, who says no? If McMahon could actually play 3B, I'd be all over this. Unfortunately he can't.

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Sep 3, 2017 -> 11:00 AM) Avi doesn't have the trade value yet. If the idea is to trade Avi then give him all of the 2018 season to boost his stock and then dangle him on the trade market over the 2018/19 winter as a much cheaper alternative to signing Harper. If the idea is to keep Avi long term, let's see how he performs next year and go from there. Great thing about Avi is that there's no pressure to trade or extend him. Just wait and see.. Exactly. I have no doubt that RH will be listening on Avi this offseason, but he is out in RF next season unless someone comes to the table with a top 50 guy the Sox like and an interesting secondary piece. Turning down an offer like that is too great a risk for me on Avi. But whether or not an offer like that will come to fruition remains to me seen - the market this trade deadline didn't offer that type of upside for a player like Avi. Will this winter be different? Could be. That said, I'm becoming more and more convinced that the Sox want to be decent next year. If Avi is moved, there is no realistic option for everyday at bats in RF if the Sox are interesting in fielding a team with 75 or more wins. I think the days of acquiring legit prospects for our veterans is over. Avi isn't getting moved this offseason and won't be until Eloy is ready next summer.

Lopez, Fulmer and Holmberg to Chicago
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Sep 1, 2017 -> 04:43 PM) He probably still has first round stuff. But his delivery was such that he couldn't repeat it pitch after pitch. Has that been fixed? They're trying to calm down his motion. To me, he looks like a guy thinking too much. Just let him go out there and do his thing.

Should be hearing the names soon. Liriano and Goldberg for sure. Lopez back from DL. Clark and Walsh maybe?

sox marketing technique - acquiring attractive players
QUOTE (raBBit @ Aug 31, 2017 -> 12:45 PM) Cmon man, hah. He's a pretty standard looking guy and it's not like he's a chiseled Moncada/Robert/Kopech guy though. Someone posted a guy who is pretty ugly dude. This thread makes me a wee bit uncomfortable, but I had to stick up for Collins. Lol, I don't give a rip what any of them look like. I care how they play. Was just providing Exhibit A into why Ron's theory in whack.

QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Aug 31, 2017 -> 10:46 AM) So that means Collins starts 2018 in Charlotte probably. Getz has already said Collins and Eloy start in Birmingham.

Gonzalez to Rangers
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Aug 31, 2017 -> 10:23 AM) If there really is a "100% chance" MiGo gets traded, today is the day... MY guess is that if the Sox thought there was any chance he'd be moved today, he would not be pitching today.

Fantastic Starts and Where to Not Find Them
QUOTE (ron883 @ Aug 30, 2017 -> 03:30 PM) Glad Jose took notice of my criticism and improved. I've been saying for ages that if he loses weight his production will improve. Wah-lah, turns out I was correct. Keep it up Jose. You were correct? LOLZ. I know the Sox want to keep Jose around for Moncada, but I would definitely explore moving him this offseason. IF they can get a nice offer, I'd move him in a heartbeat. But I think the Sox will try to put a halfways decent team on the field next year, which means Jose stays.

Kopech will have a chance to win a rotation spot next spring
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 02:06 PM) I would still guess that the 5th spot in our 2018 rotation will be filled by a rule 5 draft pick as we have a clear opening right there and no internal candidates who will be likely to force them off the roster. We don't have room for guys in the infield or outfield, but the rotation has an opening so it's a logical place. I just listed several internals candidates for the 5th spot. I obviously think we'll grab a Rule IV guy, but I'd be surprised if he was in the rotation. Either a utility guy or relief pitcher.
