  1. I am an eternal optimist in Spring, but every team is going to game plan so Colson doesn’t beat them. A lot will depend on the rest of the Sox lineup. So if Vargas, Mune, Teel, and Baldwin all take a step forward, it would really help. I say 35, but literally anything could happen. Wide variance of outcomes for Colson. Btw, spellcheck keeps trying to change his name to “Colton.” We need to get a Colston Loveland, Colton Dach, Colson Montgomery pic this summer at the Rate.
  2. I think the Sox will employ more than 5 starters by May 1. They have so many multi-inning guys that I can see Venable mixing and matching with guys like Fedde, Newcomb, and Vasil (or Paez if he makes the team) based on opponents and also to give extra rest to Kay (coming back from pitching once a week in Japan) and Shane Smith. So, I am not really that concerned with who the initial 5 are.
  3. Maybe he’s from the Mirror Universe where Acuna switch hits. Can anyone check to find out if he recently shaved off a goatee?
  4. Reporting was when he signed that Sox wanted to lower/eliminate the leg kick and make it more of a toe tap. If you want to hit velocity consistently, getting rid of the leg kick is a great place to start.
  5. That 1990 team is probably my favorite of all time. Even ahead of 1992, 1993, 1994, and 2005. I went to a ton of games because I was under-employed that summer. At one point, the Sox won 18 straight games where I was in attendance. Great memories. Thanks for the reminder.
  6. *spit take*
  7. Getz addresses the media today. Pitchers and catchers report tomorrow. Baseball season is upon us. Have at it.
  8. What an interesting trade. Milwaukee selling high on Durbin and buying low on Harrison. Boston, who has been a very good drafting team, getting the Comp B pick. Intriguing.
  9. I think Murphy is a lock and if Newcomb doesn’t get a starting spot both Gilbert and Eisert could be gone.
  10. I am because I follow college football.
  11. The Tiger’s payroll is up to $215 million, more than double the limit for the Sox. They have a larger revenue stream, and bigger attendance. And yet, they have a Competitive B pick they cannot lose. The current system is complete BS and seems designed to largely screw one team: The Sox. The frickin’ Cardinals get bonus picks for crying out loud. I hope to God it changes in the next CBA so that every team operates under the same rules.

I was not saying anything against him. Getz has said they want to keep him out of the outfield this year.

I really believe the Sox want to keep Benintendi out of the outfield as much as possible this year.
  15. Of the 9 guys I listed as possible DFA, only 3 have options left. The Sox just DFA’d 2 of them. Not a huge deal, but the last day of Spring is gonna be a day of reckoning because not all of those guys who are out of options are gonna make this team.
  16. I don't think the Sox will have that much trouble finding 3 guys to DFA. Here are some names: Eisert, Gilbert, Hudson, Iriarte, Lee, Romo, Mead, Hill, and Peters. Pick any 3 of those.
  17. I am not enamored of Ziehl, but Sandlin doesn't seem like anything either. Will be interesting to see how much money Sox are getting to offset Hicks.

No such thing as a bad 1 year contract.

I like Hays. He’s great as the short side of a platoon and okay if he faces righties with real weakness against sliders. As long as he doesn’t play center, he’s a pretty good defender. I personally am a Baldwin Stan, but will acknowledge that his routes in the corners were brutal last year. Letting him play one position more often would help that. Currently, his best defensive position is third base. With the juice in his bat, I could definitely see a poor man’s Barger and that’s a pretty good player.
  20. The big question: what is this year’s milkshake?
  21. I suspect the Pohlads may be about to do the full Reinsdorf and trade Ryan, Buxton, etc and Falvey wanted none of it. Can’t be a great place to work if the top 2 baseball guys both voluntarily leave in a two year period.
  22. Obviously, it is very hard to compare the son of a Cuban baseball legend who had to defect to this country, but signed earlier to a guy who did the showcase circuit but also played Lansing-area High School ball. Then add in the illness that swept through Kanny last year and helped lead to a lost month for Bonemer. Vargas and Bonemer are each on very different journeys.
  23. I think it could be Hill. That split contract is designed to get him through waivers. You could also DFA and trade Lee, release Eisert, Gilbert, Romo, Mead, and Peters. Lotta 40th men on this roster.
  24. Callis really didn’t like Bonemer headed into the draft, so he is not on that train. He doesn’t want to put him in front of Carlson and Carlson can’t be higher than 70, therefore… To be fair, Bonemer’s swing mechanics are unusual. Most guys wouldn’t be strong enough to make them work.
