Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer

Yep and the Padres don't want Manny

Yeah, I don't think teams are playing Dave Hester and risking hundreds of millions to get other teams in other leagues to up their bid.

Also keep in mind, if they got the White Sox to pay extra, that ups the cost for everyone.

  • Honestly curious - do you think people think this type of stuff (posting in every thread at once) and the poop bit are funny?

  • we just saw two of the most expensive rotations in baseball squaring off in the World Series but yes spending on pitching is a terrible idea.

No, remember? He doesn’t want to go to the west coast and didn’t even grant them a meeting. Definitely was an agent ploy lol

I remember people saying on here that the Padres had no money to sign him

Signing stras at 5/175 would put sox payroll around 113. That should still leave room for other things for a team trying to be competitive. There is no reason this team needs to cap themselves at $120 mill

I don't see any realistic scenario that Straburg signs for 5/$175M if Wheeler is truly approaching Corbin territory.

edit: and if that is realistic, signing Wheeler for anything over $110M is insane.  Just give it to Strasburg.

Yup, that too because they were “bankrupt”. The moral is that no one knows anything

And Manny wouldn't want to play there because of the tax rates!

Bottom line is you're Chicago, not Kansas City. Get off your ass and get the good ones. Not Plan B-.

Wow. Some spicy rumors since last night. If the White Sox end up missing out, I hope it's to the Reds and not the Phillies. They will be an interesting watch next season.

Rumors and tidbits similar to the Manny chase last season.  The latest news about the Phillies is concerning, but as others have said it could be a plant from Wheeler's camp trying to get the Sox to up their offer.  I just hope it's over soon.

Not sure if anyone posted this but Rosenthal was on MLBN today and he said he expects the Wheeler sweepstakes to end soon, maybe even today

Nope, hadn’t heard. Thank you.

Wheeler would be a nice get but this bidding is getting a bit out of hand. If it is north of the 5 year 115 million I wouldnt mind walking away. That is a lot of money for potential and I doubt he lives up to it.

I’m thinking all those rumors and tweets were plants to get the Sox to up there offer. However, if you have the Phillies or the Reds going 6 years, I wouldn’t be disappointed in the Sox backing down. That’s too many years to invest in a pitcher that is injury prone.

Short memories of what?  That signing a catcher for $70 million is our biggest spend ever when over 100 contracts of $100 million have been given out throughout MLB?  Is this kid related to Jerry or Rick?  Gracious, the payroll may be over $100 million this year (only 30 million below the league average).......all hail the big spenders!  Loon

I am greatly offended by this... my memory is certainly not defective.

With teams bowing out, it looks like final bids are being submitted. May the best bid win.

Sox would improve their chances if the second best bid won.
