Was also unaware of that wrinkle. I was thinking this pretty much signals Sox done with Collins, but perhaps not. 

I'm guessing Grandal will probably catch tonight since Keuchel is on the mound? It'll be interesting to see if Dallas pitches better with Grandal behind the plate again.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure it wont matter long term, as Collins is probably not with the organization moving forward.

I agree with the person you quoted so I’ll chime in with my two cents. 

I don’t think Zavala is a good defensive catcher. A little better than Collins but still bad. And I think Collins calls a better game. 

How demoralizing to be sent down instead of Zavala. What does that tell you about your hitting and catching skills?

They both suck but it's basically who would you rather have. A guy who can call a solid game but is a shit pitch framer, unathletic as hell (Collins) or have a guy who calls a below average game, great pitch framer, but a passed ball machine (Zavala).

Both have shit bats so that's a wash (Collins can take a walk, Zavala can run into one over the fence. Both K alot).

When he actually catches the ball, Seby is a much better framer. I don't think there is any question, there. But yeah, bat sucks, passed ball machine vs left handed bat sucks, calls an ok game, but can't frame anything.

Jan Gomes is a free agent. Then sign a no hit defensive catcher.

Yes, but an option is more attractive to other teams. Edit, saw the rule, so he is coming back for sure. I still think he will have a career. He should be on Detroit or Pittsburgh or somewhere he would actually get a chance to succeed. It seems half the time he caught was against LHP. It's got to be hard to be sharp playing as infrequently as he has.

We're talking about 5 days here.  Collins will be back September 1. They both suck tho - just happy we'll get Grandal behind the plate at least 4 days a week moving forward.

Huh?  Grandal is signed for 2 more years.  Yan Gomes would be a great backup behind Grandal, but we certainly wouldn't need another.
