It is in his contract that JR has the authority to run the White Sox as he sees fit. The minority owners ( aka members of the board) almost literally have no say...none in things. If he wanted to hand off control he has the legal authority to do so.

But he doesn't want to do this.

For example after 2005 some members of the board wanted JR to sell the club when the iron was hot, he refused. In 2008 Andrew Berlin twice tried to buy the club, JR refused.

Do you know what the partnership agreement says about passing JR's authority to his heirs?  It can't be automatic, can it?

Any lawyers around here:  Can a partnership continue if a partner dies?  Or does a new agreement have to be enacted?  A partnership isn't a corporation, we all know.

My dad is a lawyer and he told me all about this years ago. If JR dies, the executor of his estate gets his power. These other partners have zero say officially. JR might take their advise, but he's under no obligation.

Even projecting Hahn being fired, I just don’t see JR doing a proper rinse of the organization’s management for it to be effective. Plus, I doubt we get the cream of the crop GM candidates, because they know all about Reinsdorf. Probably only one thing that needs to happen for a full rinse…

If we could just get back to having an average GM, that would be progress. An average GM in the Chicago area, with moderate resources and the AL central as opponents, should be able to give you several competitive years in a stretch before a few lean and rebuilding years. We got that from Kenny Williams of all people, that’s not a ridiculous standard to hope for.

The one time JR went out of his comfort zone and hired Larry Himes, it set the team up for years. He wound up hating Himes because Larry didn't want JR meddling. He has to see his way doesn't work.

I always thought it was lousy  how JR bad mouthed Himes after letting him go. JR went on numerous radio and TV stations and dumped all over Himes.

September 15, 1990 - Owner Jerry Reinsdorf fired G.M. Larry Himes citing ‘personality differences.’ Himes drafted and signed Sox future stars like Frank Thomas, Jack McDowell, Robin Ventura and Alex Fernandez. During the press conference announcing the hiring of Ron Schueler as new G.M., Reinsdorf issued his famous ‘Point A to point B to point C’ comment. Later in a rare radio appearance he was candid on the subject to host Chet Coppock. “The fact is Larry Himes cannot get along with anybody. You can hardly find anybody in the Sox organization that wasn’t happy when Larry Himes left.”

The problem was JR and Himes didn't get along. I knew numerous people who worked for the team who liked Himes. Himes and JR didn't see eye to eye and Himes was gone. Many years ago George Weiss was the GM for the Yankees. Nobody liked him, nobody. The Yankees kept him on because he was one of the greatest GMs in MLB history. He is one of the few GMs who went into the MLB HOF. When the Yankees let him go after the 1960 season he was the first person hired to be the new GM with the expansion Mets. If I would have owned the team I would have kept Himes on the job as long as he was productive. Hahn has been the White Sox GM for years only because him and JR are buddies. Can anybody tell me that Hahn has been a better GM than Himes?

If JR would hire someone from outside of his comfort zone, the White Sox GM job should be very attractive for an up and coming GM candidate.

Outside of the general "There's only 30 of these jobs available" you would be stepping into the biggest payroll in a bad division. If you're good at your job you could dominate the central.

It also allows you to showcase yourself for when JR inevitably dicks you around and you can leave to land a GM job with a better organization.

Just an old guy’s recall here but didn’t JR have Schuyler on the payroll as a sore armed pitcher with a small but unbreakable contract so he made him pitching coach? GM was the next stop.

Does anybody think that Hahn will lose his job? I don't.

I still think Jerry will promote him to Kenny's spot once his contract is over and he retires. If they lose a hundred games and 2024 season ticket sales are dismal, I guess there is a slight possibility.

In most organizations, he likely would have been gone in 2016, and certainly in 2023 with 90 + losses.

Sox remain stuck with two series wins over teams with winning records, one of which is currently under .500.

2023 series wins against winning teams through Summer Solstice:

  • 2-1 vs. Minnesota 17-12 (May 2-4)
  • 2-1 at New York A. L. 36-25 (June 6-8)

Part of the reason is his team is like an NBA All Star Game Team playing defense.

2023 BIS Defensive runs saved runs lost per year (Baseball Reference - Through Tuesday Games):

  • 22 C Zavala
  • 16 RF Frazier
  • 13 CF Robert Jr.
  • 0 LF Benintendi
  • -2 1B Vaughn
  • -6 2B / -10 SS Andrus
  • -8 3B Moncada
  • -11 RF Sheets
  • -16 2B Sosa
  • -16 3B Burger
  • -17 SS Anderson
  • -28 C Grandal
  • -28 RF Jimenez
  • -29 RF Colas

Fire Rick Hahn.

Odds are almost even having a bottom ten payroll to make the playoffs compared to being a Top Ten payroll.

Pretty sure it would shift to 6/12 if the Guardians end up overtaking the Twins again.

That's pretty incredible.

Well, the playoff structure is farcical since there should only be 4 teams under the traditional 90+ year format, or 6 maximum with the current divisional format (2nd and 3rd seeded division winners best of 3/5 and then the LCS would be the upper boundary).

If the season ended now, Atlanta (NL East .644) vs. Arizona (NL West .600) and Tampa Bay (AL East .675) vs. Texas (AL West .622) under 7/8 team divisions would reward the teams with a truly great season. You'd also have the great playoff races and Best of Three Play-in Games for Division Ties that are now gone, replaced by with just about any team .500 or better walking in and tie-breakers. It's really sad and a significant reason why most fans don't give a s%*# about the playoffs anymore unless their team is in it.

  • AL East: Baltimore, Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, Nashville, New York, Tampa Bay, Toronto.
  • AL West: Chicago, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Minnesota, Oakland, Seattle, Texas.
  • NL East: Atlanta, Cincinnati, Miami, Montreal, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington DC.
  • NL West: Arizona, Chicago, Colorado, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Saint Louis, San Diego, San Francisco.

Hahn Era Proper Playoff format (Prior World Series champ in bold):

  • 2023: Atlanta .644 vs. Arizona .600  & Tampa Bay .675 vs. Texas .622
  • 2022: (Atlanta vs. New York .623) vs. Los Angeles .685 New York .623 vs. Houston .685
  • 2021: Atlanta .547 vs. San Francisco .660 & Tampa Bay .617 vs. Houston .586
  • 2020: Atlanta .583 vs. Los Angeles .717 & Tampa Bay .667 vs. (Minnesota vs. Oakland .600)
  • 2019: Atlanta .599 vs. Los Angeles .654 New York .636 vs. Houston .660
  • 2018: Atlanta .556 vs. Milwaukee .589 & Boston .667 vs. Houston .636
  • 2017: Washington .599 vs. Los Angeles .642 & Cleveland .630 vs. Houston .623
  • 2016: Washington .586 vs. Chicago .640 & Cleveland .584 vs. Texas .586
  • 2015: Pittsburgh .605 vs. Saint Louis .617 & Toronto .574 vs. Kansas City .586
  • 2014: Washington .593 vs. Los Angeles .580 & Baltimore .593 vs. Los Angeles .605
  • 2013: Atlanta .593 vs. Saint Louis .599 & Boston .599 vs. Oakland .593
