If they moved the fences back to 450 feet all around the outfield for every stadium, and then I claimed Judge would only hit 3 home runs next season, would you respond to me by saying, “Why would you think that?  He literally just hit 62 home runs.  You do realize that baseball is not played on paper or spreadsheets, right?”

Say what now? I must have missed the news that MLB is requiring all MLB stadiums to have 450 outfields. Can you please provide a link?

We can only guess obviously - but back surgery is a really big life decision. Many times back surgeries go the wrong way, and then you're stuck with the fallout for the rest of your life. If his back problem doesn't affect his regular life in a negative way, and knowing his baseball career is near the end regardless, then he probably made the best choice for himself.

As somebody married to a woman who had one back surgery that turned into NINE over the course of a decade, a bjg second to this post.

And yet you wonder how we end up with Sheets in RF and Vaughn in LF. It's just baseball, who needs stats? Its baseball, they should be able to throw and catch a ball wherever they're put.

Where is anyone saying that the Sox shouldn't look at stats? Playing unatheltic first basemen in the outfield is a terrible idea and something most T-ball coaches recognize as something you shouldn't do.  A general manager shouldn't need a Dropbox full of excel spreadsheets to know that Sheets and Vaughn are poor outfiedlers.

Also, we'll see how this copy/pastes, otherwise I'll give the link.

Anti stat people may want to give baseball savant a look. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/andrew-benintendi-643217?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb

! Note: This tells how many of this player's home runs would have been out of other stadiums. This accounts for different wall heights, distances and environmental effects. For these purposes, the 2020 Blue Jays home field was still Rogers Centre,

Thanks for sharing this.

Do you have the numbers for Abrue from last year on this or Eloy from the last couple years?

God, what a pointless fuckin argument no one else cares about.

Good thought out and relevant response.

I'm sorry the topic of our highest paid free agent and his ability or inability to drive the ball, how Guaranteed Rate plays a factor into results, and statistics bore you. Do you have something to add to the conversation in a December offseason thread? Or just complaining to complain and needed to voice it?

Meh. The problem isn’t that our highest paid free agent is Benintendi per se. It’s that the highest paid free dollar amount is only $75M. Should be someone else higher than that amount in the year 2022 for a major market team. Contract overall is fine.

ha, i was just saying more along the lines, what else are we supposed to talk about in a message forum in the offseason? a conversation if Benny can hit homers seems relevant coming off a year where we didn't drive the ball at all. There are a ton of arduous, pointless conversations on this board, especially during the offseason. Discussing Benny's underlying stats and statcast numbers seems like one of the more relevant conversations to have.

Still thinking about all that money for a singles hitting corner outfielder. Ryan Sweeney was born a generation too soon.

Beni is OK. I asked a big Royals fan at church Sunday if I will love Beni or hate him? He said 'Just don't expect him to hit for power.' Not making it up. Generally fans liked him but ...

One of the fun things about being a fan is playing GM in the off season.  I was hoping for either Beni or Kepler so I'm happy.  Those that wanted Gallo will get to watch and saying I told you so...or you were right.  At this point I am pleased with the offseason but still want a second baseman and SP depth piece.

I really like baseball talk and how using different analytic means to enhance the strength of your argument.

If 10D can hit about 17 HRs (very possible at GRF) with OBP of .350+ and above avg D that will be enough for me.

He's never been a clearly above average defender, he's just about adequate. Maybe a smidge below average earlier in his career but that was when he was dealing with the Monster. He's not likely to be substantially above average.

He has a .351 career OBP, but it has bounced between .324 in 2021 and .373 last year depending on his approach at the plate and BABIP. Steamer projection has him at .335 next year.

Both of those would be significant boosts for the White Sox out of their OF, but both of those would miss what you just requested.

The year when his Outs Above Average was 0?

I looked at zero of his advanced stats. I just assumed when you get an award that says you are the best defensive left fielder in the American League, even though there is always some politics involved in the voting and your offense plays a role when it shouldn't, it would at least mean you are above average that year.
