Your Personal Sox Likeability Hall Of Fame

Featured Replies

How about some positive feedback. Some in the unlikeable thread seemed to want a thread where we discuss Sox players that we just liked regardless of how well they played. Of course there were guys that made you feel good to be a Sox fan for their on and off the field work....I'd put Jose Abreu there....but there is also guys that you maybe just liked for how hard they played or interacted with the fans, etc.

I mentioned a few of mine in the other thread but I will post them again here....Tim Hulett, Craig Grebeck, Donn Paul, Darren Lewis.

I also liked Kelly Wunsch. I used to love how he would wait to go to the bullpen for when Gene Honda would say "Sox fans....on your feet"  Then Kelly would wave to the crowd like the standing ovation was all for him.

A coach that I loved for how he interacted with the fans was Man Soo Lee....the Babe Ruth of Korea.

I look forward to hearing what other SoxTalkers have to say.

Man Soo Lee was awesome. Thome was always great too.

Greg Norton, for sure. Had the adversity of his father killing his mother, and was raised by his older brother. I always had a soft spot for him based on that.

Alan Bannister. He played in Korea for a winter, or something. They didn't slide on double plays, so when he whipped the relay, he nailed a runner right in the forehead. The runner got right up and ran to the dugout, so he thought the guy was okay. Turns out the player died in the next few days of a hemorrhage. I thought that must be a burden to carry through life.

Dick Allen - Caught so much racist garbage early on in Philly. Then he daughter was murdered a little while back.

Wilbur Wood - He just always seemed like a gentle and quiet guy. I always liked him.

Walt Williams - went to a game with my Cub fan buddies back in the 80s. Walt Williams ran across the field, and I yelled "Hey, No-Neck". He stopped and turned. We waved, he got this big smile on his face and waved back.

Greg Walker - I always thought he caught a bum rap as hitting coach. Seemed like a good guy.

Francisco Barrios, Bobby Jenks, John Cangelosi, Harry Chappas.

(Leaving out the big names like PK, Buehrle, Frank, etc.)

Shingo Takatsu (was obsessed with that delivery as a kid, we all use to try and replicate it)

One of my favorite times at the ballpark was a double header where we were sitting pretty even with the mound and this new Shingo guy came in. He kept throwing it slower and slower and the opposing hitters had no chance. It was outstanding fun!!!

I’ve always had a soft spot for Kelly wunsch

Absolutely love your addition of Nancy Faust.

Back in about 2000, I think Kelly was being interviewed on the score. For whatever reason the convo had something about getting puled over by the cops and whats the first thing you should do. Kelly said the first thing he did was hide his crack pipe!!?

Greg Norton. His uniform was always dirty because he always busted his ass.

Britt Burns. Pitched the game of his life in the 1983 playoffs and still lost. That was one of the biggest clutch performances I have ever seen.

Billy Pierce, Jeff Torborg and Roland Hemond immediately come to mind.

Billy was IMHO the most likable of them all, a great guy and a class act.

I was a huge Francisco Barrios fan in the late 70's.  I had heart surgery as a kid and my dad knew someone who worked at Comiskey, so he asked Barrios if he would come visit me in the ICU. The guy hardly spoke a word of English, but he showed up and  spent more than an hour with me ... the day following a nighttime start.

I'll never forget his generosity...great dude. Just sad what happened to him later on.

That’s a great story!

Around that same era I sent Ed Farmer a fan letter as a young child.  He actually called me and I’ll never forget the look on my dad’s face when he answered the phone.

This was back when players didn’t think they were better than the fans.

No order

- Buehrle

- Minoso

- Konerko

- Abreu

- Anderson

- Quintana

- Giolito

- Hendriks

- Burger

- Thome

- Dye

- Pierzynski

In no order or grouping - limiting it to my lifetime as a fan (born in 1984):

Crede
Rowand
Thome
El Duque
Dave Martinez
Robin Ventura (the player)
Durham
Jose Valentin
Jason Bere
Bill Simas for some reason
Tad Iguchi
Herbert "Milkman" Perry
Burger
Abreu
Pudge
Konerko
Buehrle

Growing up I loved Wilson Alvarez, coming up and pitching the wild no hitter as a kid was just magical. He never really did much of note in his career after that, but I still loved him.

On the World Series team it was Torpedo Boat Uribe he was so fun to watch as a SS, strongest arm I've seen on the Sox.

Recent years nobody really comes to mind too much. I kinda have a soft spot for Reylo for some reason.

Soderholm

Don and Hawk

Roland Hemmond

Carlton Fisk

Harold Baines
