Didn't they know Steven Wilson was available?

No one wanted the guy at $950K.  Not even big money for a mediocre reliever.  Hell, the veteran minimum salary is $760K!

Yet another indictment of our great GM.

Hoyer acknowledged some introspection because of the uncertainty but said he feels 2025 is going to be a good year.

“Sometimes that’s the nature of this business — but it’s fun,” Hoyer said about dealing with free agency rumors. “The reason we’re sitting here, the reason we got into this in the first place, is baseball is an awesome fan sport. People care so much about the Cubs. That’s why I love working here.”

Cal Quantrill signs with the Marlins...$3.5 million + 500K possible in additional incentives.

Marlins getting closer and closer to White Sox payroll number, and will pass them whenever Benintendi's/Robert's traded.

White Sox in the $74.3 million range, Marlins have passed $70 million now, just a bit over.

Surely, they'll pass us when they take Machado's contract off of the Padres' books for a prospect or two.

The odds of that happening are about 1 in a million...unless the Padres sent Salas and deVrieze along with him, which they're obviously not going to do unless Preller is no longer the GM and a "cost cutter" like Getz is brought in to conduct a fire sale.

For now, there's no pressing need to trade Manny Machado.  The Padres definitely want Machado to go into the HoF in a Padres cap, not Orioles.  And it's not like they have a huge number of Hall of Fame players in the history of that organization.

Tigers signed RHP John Brebbia to a one-year, $2.25 million contract with a $4 million club option for 2026.

If he's like some of the other recent Sox relief pitchers who got away from the shitshow (Hill, Kopech, Diekman) he'll do just fine.

Padres continue to baffle by signing Pivetta for a lot of cash.

Wow.

WestEddy check?

He had Machado to the Marlins lol.

Definitely going to try to go for it through the trade deadline then...

Still need at least one more hitter to replace Solano/Peralta.

Connor Joe/Heyward combo might still out produce Profar this year.

Cease King Pivetta Darvish Waldron/Vasquez/Kolek/Hoenig rotation.

Funny how most of the players Getz acquired last year had to sign for half the money or less because they were so bad with the Sox last season.  Getz sure knows how to pick em.

"The Padres are in agreement with Nick Pivetta on a four-year, $55MM free agent deal that includes multiple opt-out chances, reports Jeff Passan of ESPN. It’s an extremely backloaded contract that pays Pivetta a $3MM signing bonus and a $1MM salary for the upcoming season, Passan adds. That’ll be followed by successive salaries of $19MM, $14MM, and $18MM. Pivetta can opt out after the second and third seasons. The deal is pending a physical."

Really creative contract to make the payroll numbers work for 2025...could obviously backfire, but Premier knew he needed one more solid pitcher in the rotation if he wasn't going to trade Cease or King before OD.

Essentially 4/$55 million...

Apparently he turned down 6/170 for this.

Surprised the Sox didn’t go after Junis, as he’s only getting 4.5 million.  Thought he would have been a dynamite closer option.

Guardians' bullpen just keeps getting stronger and stronger.

Weren't Clase and Cade Smith basically the two most valuable relievers in the AL last year?

And then they're adding to it?

It's a Hahn 2020-21 strategy, except not spending themselves into a quandary on too many expensive/over-priced veterans.

Guardians have now cleared $80 million in payroll...25th

https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/cash/_/year/2025/sort/cash_total

Then there's a HUGE $25 million payroll gap up to the Cincinnati Reds (24th) at $106.6 million

Only six teams remaining with payrolls under $100 million (Oakland is expected to eventually get up to $105 million in the next year)

CLE, TB, PITT, OAK, CHW, MIA

Connor Joe is one possibility for that DH vacancy, though he’s ideally a platoon partner with Jason Heyward in left field. Non-roster options like Gavin Sheets and Mike Brosseau will get a shot, as will prospect Tirso Ornelas.

“Those are good guys that we feel like have a chance to surprise a little bit,” Preller said of his DH options. “But we’re going to continue to look to see if we can add to the offense as well in the next couple weeks.”
