New City-Connects: Bulls / Sox collab

Recommended Posts

Like my response to the leaks: Love / hate.

Hat is a home run. I actually wasn't a fan of the Chi hat, so this is a step up.

Sleeveless look is great. You can even argue that it connects to the city, with the dynasty being such a fundamental piece of the city's sporting history.

But because it's JR, this feels like a cheap cop out.

Also, Miguel Vargas is throwing sass.

Completely agree with all of this.

The design itself isn't bad, like you said the flying sock logo is actually pretty nice. It's just an incredibly lazy ass design. The point of these is to connect it the team to the city of Chicago, and this fails miserably at that. There is nothing connecting the Sox and Bulls outside of piss-poor ownership.

Outside of profit motivations for the Reinsdorfs and "co-branding" you mean.   If they can't manage to do it on the field or court, well...there's always souvenir sales, right?

At least the Sky have a connection to the most famous building in Chicago.

They might as well have put the infamous "bean" from Millennium Park on the hats, lol.  Or maybe a whale from Shedd Aquarium?

“They suck and I’m not talking about the standings,” added another, who could very well have been talking about the standings. The White Sox are 7-21, good for the worst record in the American League.

And, it seems, one fan even saw the uniforms as an indictment on the entire White Sox' long, mostly boring history.

“Stop making disconnected jerseys without the team’s colors,” they wrote. “Stop letting players wear equipment that is not the team’s colors. Stop trying to erase tradition and history.”

On that note, a reminder that Jerry Reinsdorf owns both the Bulls and White Sox.

“Really reminds me of how Jerry Reinsdorf has ruined two sports franchises, thanks,” said one fan.

“A nice collaboration between the two biggest jokes of franchises in chicago 👌🏼,” said a commenter.

“One of the challenges we had coming out of having our first Southside City Connect jersey was how could you ever match it or top it,” White Sox Chief Revenue and Marketing Officer Brooks Boyer said. “One of the thoughts that was pushed right away was that no one has ever done a collaboration between a Major League Baseball team and an NBA team. In a market like Chicago with a history of both teams, how great would it be to be able to collaborate with our partners in the Bulls, along with Nike and Fanatics, to do something that is unique and very different.”

Both the White Sox and Bulls have specific elements throughout the uniform. The black and red colorway pays tribute to both franchises, and the pinstripes on the jersey serve as visual lineage to the Bulls’ iconic years in the 90’s and the White Sox history. The most subtle detail in the uniform comes in the neckline area, which includes all nine championships that both franchises have won in their histories. All three White Sox World Championships (1906, 1917, and 2005) are in white, and all six Bulls Championships (1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, and 1998) are in red.

Also, only team with TWO game caps, lol (more sales/revenues, yay!!!)

Red is a historical Sox color, so the bolded is talking out of their ass.

The more I look at these, the more I realize my issue with them: The black pinstripes. It's an element from the Sox jerseys, which is hypothetically good to keep, but they never existed for the Bulls. It creates this weird, uncanny valley effect where it almost looks like a Bulls jersey, but something is off.

If they had just done a red jersey (keep the black sleeves) with the cursive Chicago script that both teams (historically) share, I think they'd be less jarring / would come across as something better than a Reinsdorf-special. It's irking me because it was so close. The pants, hat, sleeves and logo all look good. It's just the torso.

Different tones of red, maybe?    Are the early 70's and 1983/batting practice jerseys Chicago Bulls' red?   The 1959 jerseys have that outline of red, but it's also not quite the same.

Seems like slightly different shades.

Eh, the '59 jersey red is still there. Just because it wasn't a dominant color doesn't mean it wasn't visible / a distinct part of their jersey/logo.

Feels a little desperate to sell merchandise lol.  At least revenues from somewhere.

Every city connect is for these desperate reasons

Feels notable

Does MLB/Nike still have their "4 uniform combinations plus a City Connect" rule they implemented a couple of years ago? I know it doesn't impact us as much because we don't have many alternates, but that would mean:

- home whites

- road grays

- black jersey and white pants

- Southside former CC

- Bulls CC

Some other teams like Seattle and Arizona had to make some tough choices and dropped some good ones.

Yes still five. And I'd say it definitely affects us since no retros.

I actually kind of like the uniform.  It looks a lot better than the leaked pics from a while back.  I like the black pants with the jersey.  The Southside city connects will never be topped, though.

5 different uniforms is such a dumb self handicap lol.
