Pretty sure the strike 3 call that Wilson didn't get to end the inning was the same location Kershaw got #3000 on

Calls like that are why ABS is coming

And the 3-0 strike call to Quero earlier in the game was way more outside than that.

This is not because of kershaw's greatness, it has to do with pitch counts and the way pitchers are managed.  It's another way the game has changed.  I've seen quite a few of the 3k+ pitchers, and kershaw has never been a standout among them.  It's an achievement for a HOF pitcher to be sure.  But Austin Slater don't care, and neither do I.

I hear you. I am one of the old time fans who is saddened by the end of the complete game starter and the 3,000 strikeout guy. And the guy who wins 300 games. ... Think how sad it is that we'll never have another 300 game winner. Never.

Very few guys will pitch complete game no hitters ever again. Sad, sad. I also wonder if anybody will ever get 3,000 hits again. Doubtful.

Candidates for 300 wins: Nobody.

Candidates for 3,000 hits ...

Machado (no. I just sense he'll pull a Jose Abreu and at some point just stop hitting). Freeman: No. He's 35. Altuve: 35, too old as well.

Ramirez: Too old. Lindor: Too old by today's standards as well. Remembrer today's standards are u are pretty worthless to a team at 35, 36.

Bryce Harper: Maybe the best chance. Betts: Maybe a decent chance.

Mike Trout and Ohtani: Doubtful. Soto: Doubtful.

Bobby Witt: Maybe.

I would say the only players who have a realistic chance to hit 3,000 hits in a career before it's totally impossible to do so: Witt and Harper (gets hurt a lot). Then Altuve and Freeman.

Prediction: None of 'em make it.

What a terrible loss that was. Boom, an excellent game goes awry late.

Bad bullpens will do that to you.

10th game this year the Sox took a lead into the 7th inning or later...and lost.

Second time Taylor has been responsible. Second time for Wilson too.

Players are a lot more brittle these days

A lot more at stake with massive contracts and insurance/risk mitigation.

Once upon a time 60-65% of the players had off season jobs.

I was wrong about Sosa's bat being enough to keep him at second base (even though his 1st inning shot was inches away from being a 3 run homer).  He is just too big, clumsy and slow to play second. Maybe 1st base would be the best position for him since it requires limited range.

What a dismal, depressing loss all around though. Foolish decisions by players and coaches and as always the worst luck in the world for the Sox.

Sosa can't be a legit 1B without a 775-825 ops.

That's just not him, statistically.

I thought that Sosa was decent at 3B last year, it’s becoming pretty clear that he’s not a good second baseman and is lousy at first base also. Going forward he might be the primary DH, he’s got the power and hopefully we will see him become a 20+ homer guy.

Nah, it's analytics that ruined the grand ol game. Sad.

Nah, players don’t want to ruin their arms before they turn 30.  Happy

This game was not Venable's finest hour, or 3 hours. But can I blame him for Sosa's shitty play on first hitter in 9th? Or Taylor's collapse? This loss was a team effort.

I want to see Taylor try to close it out

I see that did not work out. It looked like an ugly appearance according to the summary. Was he wild? Nibbling? Getting squeezed by the ump? Not trusting his stuff?

Learning on the job in MLB can be rough.

The game is ruined?

Definitely a different game that I grew with. The players are without a doubt more athletic, I’m seeing defensive plays these days that are simply unbelievable, we’ve probably seen many catches now that have been better than Willie Mays’ great catch in the 1954 World Series. That being said, what drives me crazy about today’s game is guys are constantly swinging for the fences when all they need is a well placed single to win a game. Many outfielders have trouble hitting the cut off man on throws back to the infield, most teams wind up the year with more Ks than hits. Greg mentioned how pitching has changed, today pitching is entirely a different animal, just 20 years ago the Sox won the World Series with 4 complete game victories, now a team can go an entire year without a complete game. A starting pitcher now has a quality start if he goes 5 innings, give me a break. All that said, I still love Baseball, it’s a sport that if you are watching a game you will probably see something you’ve never seen before. I’ll be 80 soon and I still pull for the Sox, I still  get nervous sometimes and if the Sox have a small lead going to the 9th inning I won’t watch, I didn’t stay up last night but that game is one I would have gone to bed and as it turned out that ninth inning would have caused me to lose sleep.
