General manager Chris Getz had commanded a steep return for the soon-to-be 28-year-old outfielder in recent days, and talks with National League contenders including the Mets and Padres collapsed in the final hours, sources said.

Man how is this team ever going to get good again? They have nothing to trade, they aren’t signing difference makers. They are going to need to hit the development jackpot and even that is going to take several years to pay out.

need that new owner ASAP

Best case is he pushes for 3 WAR, gets his option picked up and is traded over the winter.

If they pick up his option after he throws down 3 WAR i wouldnt mind it if they just kept him

They need the Chase/Colson/Vargas/Qeuro/Teel/Sosa group to give them like 12-15 WAR for starters. And then find about 15 WAR from the rest of the positions. Get some decent starters and spend some money I can squint and see competing in 2027.

What if this guy was just a Sox the rest of his career? I'd be OK with that. Who else is going to play center field? I'm sort of glad they didn't trade him, we weren't getting anything back and there's no point in dumping him.

The point of dumping him was to get whatever you could and roll the dice that it could turn out to be a player you can use in the future.

The Sox aren't going anywhere with him in 2025, they aren't going anywhere with him in 2026 and it remains to be seen if baseball will be played at all in 2027 with the labor impasse.

The franchise is in a very bad spot. Some of it was because of factors beyond their control but the vast majority of it was because of their own incompetence, dysfunction and ineptness.

Sure, but what if they just re-signed him as a 30-year-old if he's productive? I'm a big fan, I think it would've been a shame if he was uneventfully traded for a lotto ticket. For a real player? Sure, but that wasn't gonna happen. I think if he's healthy into his 30s, he's still at the very least an every day player at a hard-to-fill position (especially if you're the White Sox and allergic to signing/developing outfielders).

The young guys are playing pretty well right now. That’s a start.

I don't believe him, but I want to believe.

Well, Robert is better than any CF they'd get in free agency or in the system, so it leaves the door open.

If the team was as stingy as a lot of people here claim, why wouldn’t they have just dumped him for a couple trash prospects?

Take a look at what the opening day payroll was for this season and what it is projected to be for next year.  Even $20 million added to next year’s payroll isn’t going to prove the point you are trying to make.  Give up now.

You really think we’re going to have a $40M payroll next year?

No, I think they may add bench player(s) and pitching.  But no big free agents.  They will spread it around on a few mediocre players as they always do.
